Abstract

As a side effect of the emergency transition to remote online learning, all Indonesian schools and universities have stopped teaching in classroom settings in mid-March 2020 and began using internet platforms to deliver online learning activities. However, there are issues concerning students' perseverance and achievement as fully online learning is implemented. Considering many learners may not be able to concentrate on studying under traumatic circumstances, such as a pandemic, it is necessary to consider learning strategies that produce learning opportunities for all students to achieve specific goals in distance learning. Writing skills are considered the most challenging of all language skills among English as foreign language (EFL) students. When students use an online self-regulated learning (OSEL) strategy in learning writing, they can control their performance and benefit from online learning by adjusting their behaviors. Thus, the aim of the study is to find the causal relationship between OSEL strategy and writing skills.

Abstract

Amid Covid-19 pandemic, emergency remote teaching has been done through online learning. Recent research has found some challenges and opportunities, including the debate analyzing the effectiveness of EFL online teaching and learning processes. However, little is known about the types of learning strategies that suit students' engagement with online learning. The investigation between them illustrates an emerging paradigm for English learning in an online setting, where learning takes place in authentic environments with immersive experiences in order to achieve meaningful learning. This early examination reveals assessments on their natures and applications in connection to English success with the goal of distributing such a revolutionary arena. The findings are revealed in the conclusions in the form of model hypothesis of causal relationship may accordingly help other researchers to conduct further research in exploring the prediction of learning strategies provided in this paper when dealing with enhancing EFL teaching method during this emergency remote teaching and learning

Abstract

Students are becoming adapted to online self-regulated learning (hereafter, OSEL), which is closely related to students' internet-specific epistemic beliefs (hereafter, ISEB), as the internet became an important platform for the teaching process during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This study is aimed at researching the relationship between OSEL and ISEB among EFL students and after establishing the prediction. Data were collected through the questionnaires using the ISEB questionnaire (Kammerer et al., 2015) and the OSEL questionnaire (Zheng et al., 2016). Approximately 140 undergraduate students enrolled in the seventh semester of the English language education study program at a reputable university in Malang, Indonesia involved in this study. Interviews were then conducted to confirm the findings obtained from the questionnaires. The findings showed a substantial correlation between EFL students' ISEB and OSEL, with a correlation coefficient .555 and p-value .000. It also predicted that the higher EFL students' ISEB, the higher their OSEL too. The interview results elucidated support for this prediction. Students' ISEB and OSEL can help them solve their academic problems. Therefore, some pedagogical implications are described to promote better English learning, which uses the internet as one of the media of instruction.

Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between EFL student’s online self-regulated (OSEL) and the achievements of senior high school students in Malang, Indonesia. The subject of this study were 136 EFL students of a senior high school in Malang, Indonesia with the use of two instruments: the online self-regulated learning questionnaire (containing five dimensions of OSEL; Goal Making, Environmental Construct, Task Approach & Time Management, Help-Seek, Self - Evaluation) and the mid-term test scores. Methodology: The Pearson product-moment correlation is used to analyze the data and further verifies that students OSEL strongly correlates to their achievements while undertaking online learning. Findings: It was reported that the higher the OSEL, the better they achieve. For example, students who have high achievement test scores agree that finding someone knowledgeable in online learning is an excellent solution to solve online learning difficulties. However, since technical and individual obstacles that students encounter could be the challenge, the role of teachers are essential in helping students overcoming them. Conclusion: The results of this correlation provide prediction towards pedagogical implications related to successful teaching-learning process, teacher professionalism, and maintaining a high quality school.

Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to uncover relationship between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' speaking score achievement and their epistemic beliefs. To this end, 63 Indonesian EFL students completed two different instruments, namely EFL epistemic beliefs questionnaire and final test of Intensive Speaking course. The results of Pearson Product Moment Correlation demonstrated that speaking achievement is significantly correlated with epistemic beliefs adapted from Emaliana (2017), consisting seven sub dimensions, namely, fix ability, certain knowledge, simple knowledge, omniscient authority, learning and communication strategies, foreign language aptitude, and motivation and expectation. Likewise, the findings manifested that sophisticated students who are indicated by high level of epistemic beliefs outperform simple students, who are otherwise having low level of epistemic beliefs. This research holds significant implications for curriculum, teaching and learning materials and instructional media developers, as well as teachers to afford students with personal beliefs about knowledge and knowing EFL to enhance the students' speaking skill.

Abstract

Workers with disabilities are still minimally absorbed in the job market in the formal sector. Even though there are several benefits that the company gets when it employs workers with disabilities. This study uses the library study method and interviews with 2 people with disabilities of which 1 works in the formal sector and 1 works in the informal sector. Although the Law on Persons with Disabilities has set a minimum quota for disabled workers in companies, its implementation has not been in line with expectations. Whereas companies that employ workers with disabilities will get benefits such as a good corporate image because they employ workers with disabilities, create an inclusive work environment.

Abstract

While task-based language teaching (TBLT) is among the most preferred methods for teaching foreign languages, it has not received enough study to be empirically verified in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Few studies have looked into instructors' reactions towards TBLT in the setting of Indonesian college English. This study contributes to closing the gap by studying EFL teachers' perspectives of TBLT and evaluating the present use of TBLT in online learning. Data from classroom observations, interviews, and course materials were triangulated to give a descriptive synthesis of teacher participants' experiences with TBLT instruction. The data analysis indicated that the teacher displayed proactive and reactive agencies in overcoming the conflicts in the instructional activity system via teaching as both learning and adaptation. A variety of mediational elements were revealed to account for their agency. In order to influence teachers' adoption of task-based language teaching, the study emphasizes the significance of teachers' shared attitudes regarding the usefulness of TBLT, curricular change, and institutional support. The article finishes with a discussion of the practical implications of the findings of this small-scale study on how to facilitate successful application of TBLT during emergency remote teaching in Indonesia.
