Abstract

This article describes a phenomological study in which the researchers explored students' experiences in joining task-based learning (TBL) activities. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with six participants from low, medium, and high achievement levels who had completed one semester of introduction to research method course. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), the researchers identified four primary themes representing the lived experience and meaning found in the participants' experience of task-based learning activities: (1) constructive communication; (2) helping others; (3) learning strategies; (4) sense of responsibility. The findings both support and contribute new aspects to the knowledge of this experience. The results also point to sophisticated epistemic beliefs level own by the students as the essence of the phenomenon of task-based learning activities.

Abstract

This study investigates English department students learning needs including their attitudes towards student-centered and traditional teaching approaches, culture learning in English as Foreign Language (EFL) program, attitudes towards authority in class, the main problems encountered in the course in learning English and their practice of language learning strategies. In this empirical study, following Xiao’s (2006) questionnaire, the data are collected from undergraduates and postgraduates students. In analyzing the groups, one-way ANOVA Test is used to identify whether the mean score on a variable differed significantly from one group to another by taking into account variation within groups as well as between groups. The findings of this research provide EFL teachers with insightful information on students’ learning needs as an input to syllabus and material planning, to lesson planning and classroom instruction practice. The study demonstrates the importance of a good understanding of students’ variables in TEFL programs at university level in Indonesia.

Abstract

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is known as the new curriculum that seeks students' outcomes after learning about the materials. According to that, an evaluation through the textbook, as the most-used source in teaching English, especially in Extensive Reading, is needed. The purpose of this paper is to identify whether the textbook is suitable or not based on the OBE principles. Moreover, some capable lecturers participated in evaluating this textbook using a reliable checklist. This research used a descriptive quantitative method with the results showed that in terms of module contents, this textbook is 'very poor,' in terms of module language items, this textbook is 'poor,' then in terms of module presentation expediency, this textbook is 'very poor.' The findings of this study pointed out many lacks of the textbook that need improvement.

Abstract

Students are becoming adapted to online self-regulated learning (hereafter, OSEL), which is closely related to students' internet-specific epistemic beliefs (hereafter, ISEB), as the internet became an important platform for the teaching process during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This study is aimed at researching the relationship between OSEL and ISEB among EFL students and after establishing the prediction. Data were collected through the questionnaires using the ISEB questionnaire (Kammerer et al., 2015) and the OSEL questionnaire (Zheng et al., 2016). Approximately 140 undergraduate students enrolled in the seventh semester of the English language education study program at a reputable university in Malang, Indonesia involved in this study. Interviews were then conducted to confirm the findings obtained from the questionnaires. The findings showed a substantial correlation between EFL students' ISEB and OSEL, with a correlation coefficient .555 and p-value .000. It also predicted that the higher EFL students' ISEB, the higher their OSEL too. The interview results elucidated support for this prediction. Students' ISEB and OSEL can help them solve their academic problems. Therefore, some pedagogical implications are described to promote better English learning, which uses the internet as one of the media of instruction.

Abstract

Elementary education is one of the levels of education in which students’ abilities, including attitudes, knowledge, and skill are developed through a series of learning activities undertaken. Self-regulated learning (SRL) in learning activities in elementary school is one of the factors that influences students’ academic progress and it is associated with metacognitive and cognitive skills. The study was conducted in grade 4 of a public elementary school in the rural area of Tuban, East Java, from March to June 2021. The adoption of SRL is one of the factors that may encourage students to participate actively in the learning activities. By organizing their knowledge, students will acquire an ethical attitude. Students will be more self-assured and independent, and they will not be reluctant to voice their thoughts or ideas during learning activities. From the findings, among metacognitive self-regulation and cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies are the one most frequently used by students.

Abstract

Abstract: Implementation of outcome-based Education (OBE) in Indonesia has been urged since 2019. It primes to the need of some adjustments in the higher education curriculum. In Academic writing classes in which English is served as a foreign language, implementation of OBE principles imposes issues as assessment must measure all abilities, skills, and knowledge targeted in the learning outcomes. The challenge escalate with large size classes that lead to a less optimum assessment given to learners’ writing. The need of writing assessment model that obeys OBE principles and facilitates academic writing teachers in coping with complication in providing quality assessment to scads of students in Indonesia is of a paramount importance. Yet, studies aimed at meeting the need are barely conducted. This research, therefore, designs writing assessment model which can (1) measure the expected learning outcomes, (2) monitor student’s abilities, skills and knowledge with regard to their individual learning pace, (3) assist the teachers of writing classes to comprehensively provide rigorous assessment to lots of students. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model is employed to reach the research objectives. As the whole process is still on going, this article presents the Analysis and Design stages of the study. It elaborates underlying considerations of the proposed assessment model by reviewing previous studies related to writing assessment and OBE assessment in writing. The descriptions of the illustrated assessment model are presented to provide vivid view of how the assessment model works.

Abstract

Gender representations in EFL instructional materials can be given less attention amid covid-19 pandemic because there are abundant resources offered in online learning. The current paper aims to investigate a measurement to determine whether males and females are portrayed equally in EFL instructional materials, as proposed in RUU No. 81 A of 2013 the Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Education and Culture which stated: “The curriculum should be oriented toward the production of good manners and a fair attitude, with a focus on gender equality". Employing library research method, researchers attempt to achieve this by examining ten experts’ theories which postulate equal representations of gender in EFL textbooks, namely (Dominguez 2003), Cohen, L Manion (1992), (Porreca 1984), Stockdale (2006), (Sovič and Hus 2015), (Hall 2014),  (Gharbavi and Mousavi 2012), Holmqvist and Gjorup (2006), Nofal and Qawar (2015), and Chung (2014). The findings from the analysis indicate that gender representations in learning materials measured through language items and illustrations showed inequal and further complete sub dimensions descriptions are elucidated in the discussions. Pedagogical implications of selecting and developing instructional materials, which represent gender equality, are explored more to foster effective emergency remote learning
