Abstract

This objectives of the study were aimed to find out the types and the literal meaning of figurative language in Malay song lyrics. By using descriptive qualitative method, the writer  analyzed the selected Malay songs from different album, the data were Makan Sirih, Kuala Deli, Hitam Manis, Tanjung Katung and Sri Taman. Therefore each of figurative language filtered by using the collective method that from the five songs which were analyzed one by one to gain the results directly. The writer found 44 data that emerged in those selected Malay songs. 11 out of 13 types available from the theory, which were Simile with 1 (2,5%), Metaphor with 2 (5%), Personification 13 (29,5%), Hyperbole 3 (6%), Metonymy 1 (2,5%), Synecdoche 4 (9%), Symbol 1 (2,5%), Apostrophe 1 (2,5%), Irony 12 (27%), Paradox 5 (11%), and Pleonasm 1 (2,5%). From the data, Personification was the most dominant types of figurative language used in the 5 Malay song lyrics, by knowing the circumtances of the Personification itself was the imagery that representing love, woman, life, etc.

Abstract

The aims of this study is to analyze picture series trigger memory retrieval of a story as represented in writing narration. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The source of this data are the students of SMA Swasta Kartika Medan which consists of 18 students. To collect the data, elicitation technique was used in this study. To elicit the students writing, picture series of different completeness will be presented to the students. There are three concurrent flows of action to analyze the data, they are data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the way how picture series trigger memory retrieval is that by suiting the number of clues presented to the background knowledge of the writers. The more the background knowledge of the writers have, the less clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. On the other hand, the less the background knowledge of the writers have, the more clues they need to trigger memory retrieval. Key words : Picture series, Triggering, Memory Retrieval, Writing Narration.

Abstract

This research attempts to find out 1) the hero’s journey stages in Anthony Horowitz’s novel Alex Rider (Stormbreaker) 2) Character archetypes and their roles in helping or hindering the hero to complete the hero’s journey stages in Alex Rider (Strombreaker). The research is conducted using qualitative research methods, the technique of data analysis is descriptive qualitative method, the instrument for collecting the data is documentary sheet. The source of data used for this research is Alex Rider (Stormbreaker) novel. The results of this study showed that the seventeen (17) stages formulated by Joseph Campbell are found in the novel. Furthermore, this study also showed that the seven (7) different archetypes formulated by Christopher Vogler are found in the novel. This concludes that the hero’s journey stages and the character archetypes formulas that the first data collected by Joseph Campbell was from oral tradition stories is found to be applicable to modern novels.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the typical categories of answers to Yes/No questions most used by students at selected Public Senior High Schools in Medan, Indonesia. These schools were classified into top favorite, medium favorite and non-favorite schools. Through a stratified clustered random sampling technique, six schools were chosen consisting of two schools from each classification. A number of 40 students were chosen from three class X, three class XI and three class XII at each of the six chosen schools, making a total sample of 720 students with 360 sets of dialogue scripts. Data was collected through documentation-recording dialogues. The data was transcribed and analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results of the research showed that: 1) the categories of the students’ answers to the Yes/No questions were distributed variously in terms of the six models. However, the distribution of the answers was not proportionally equal amongst all the models, 2) the dominant distribution of the answers was the third model with the formula Yes/No+additional information such as confirming, supporting, etc., reaching 37% of the total answers, whilst the least common models were the sixth and fourth categories respectively, which had 1% and 3% of the answers respectively, and finally 3) there was no significant difference in the distribution of the students’ answers in terms of the class of school whether top favorite, medium favorite or non-favorite. In conclusion, the ways to answer Yes/No questions need to be developed amongst students by their teachers by teaching and learning using natural, real life-like situations and in contextual ways.

Abstract

Teachers in the 21st century should assist all students in learning how to learn. Teachers are expected to inspire creativity, encourage cooperation, and educate the students how to communicate. The teachers are expected to create independent learning situation through utilizing digital media like google sites as one of free google products. As students of majoring in tourism are expected to promote tourism places globally by having English proficiency. In this digital era, writing can be an alternative to communicate everything via digital platform. Therefore, the study aimed to develop website on tourism through google sites in improving students’ writing skill. The study was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Medan. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, development, implementation and evaluation) model was used in conducting the study. XI grade students of tourism major were involved in this study. Depth interview and distributing questionnaire were administered to gain data of the study. the data analysis was conducted to determine the validity and effectiveness of product. The findings of study showed that 90% of students really needed writing skill and wanted to develop their skill in digital platform like a website. Then, 10% of students hadn’t decided whether it was needed for the future after graduation or not. However, those students needed to learn and have the skill. After doing validating, website on tourism through google sites had been valid (93%) to be applied. It was also effective to improve students’ writing skill after analyzing the result of English test and response of teacher and students.

Abstract

In the age of accessible news, where it can be obtained anywhere and anytime, news can be shared through social media, and it merely showed the headline as the way to intrigue the readers. The writing of headline structures expressed what is the center of information, who is the participant, and what action is done. This issue unintentionally can also shape the readers’ perception, the order of participants and action in the sentence influence the various aspect into the meaning. This study examined how rhetoric is written in the headlines of market issues based on critical discourse analysis. It applied the theory proposed by Van Dijk (2013) namely formal structures of discourse.  300 data were obtained from November 2022 to February 2023 based on the syntactic structures. The findings showed that there are three ways that media used in arrangement of words and phrases to create the headline news. They are active, passive, and nominalizations. Active become the most types used in the headline, followed by passive and nominalizations. This analysis inferred that the perspective of CNBC Indonesia is neutral but sometimes they also supported the government's economic policies. It is because they did not show their inclination towards one party.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) the types of code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, 2) the way of using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, and 3) the reasons for using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS. The data are analysed by descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were from utterances (chat) of participants. The source of data are taken from screenshot of WhatsApp Chat Group IBAD LOVERS from February 22nd 2020 till August 6th 2020 and the online questionnaire. The results of this research showed that 1) there were five types of code-mixing are used by the participants in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: phrase insertion with total number 46 utterances (46%), word insertion with total number 30 utterances (30%), hybrid insertion with total number 11 utterances (11%), clause insertion with total numbers 10 utterances (10%), and expression insertion with total number 3 utterances (3%). 2) There were five ways to show about the using of code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: 52 (52%) for chat, 36 (36%) for comment, 7 (7%) for photo™s caption, 3 (3%) for video™s caption, 2 (2%) for link. 3) There were four reasons about the factors of using code-mixing in WhatsApp (WA) chat group IBAD LOVERS, namely: 12 (60%) for talking a particular topic, 4 (20%) for being emphatic on something, 2 (15.3%) for to make utterance clearer, 1 (5%) for intention of clarifying the speech.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out meanings, what, how, and why the author conveys Metaphor in Guro-guro Aron Songs . This study was conducted using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were taken from Guro “ guro Aron song lyrics by Salamah Br. Barus. The sources of the data were ;˜Simulih Karaben™,perbual™,bencah buruk™.Kelengi aku™,and Sayang kel aku. The data were analyzed by using Harford™s theory. 1) The writer found there were three types of metaphor namely, conceptual metaphor (44,4%), ontological metaphor (36,3%) and orientational metaphor (18,1%). 2) the meaning of metaphor in the Guro “ guro Aron Songs. 3) There were reason the guro-guro aron why the author conveys metaphor through the lyrics of guro-guro aron album based on life and love, it interpreted by tribal leader who knows all the meaning where each lines has a deep meaning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show and the reason for the participants to violate the maxims. The method used by researchers in this study is qualitative research with data sourced from the Hotman Paris Show youtube account that uses #trending in the publishing process so that 17 videos are obtained. Data collection techniques using documentary techniques as data collection instruments. The analysis technique used is: 1) Identify the types of maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show 2) Reducing irrelevant data sources with maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation 3) Classifying the data to its types 4) Interpreting the expressions of the principles of cooperation and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occur in the conversations of the participants and 5) Drawing the conclusions based on the research problem of this study. The results of this research principle of cooperation on the maxim of quantity with the number of 65 utterances (64%), the maxim of quality with the number of 19 utterances (19%), the maxims of the relationship with the number of 8 utterances (8%) and manner with the number of 9 utterances (9 %). In the analysis of reasons, there were 83 errors made by participants which were divided into understatements of 20 data (24%), irony17 data (20%), overstatements 13 data (15%), extreme 10 data (12%), sarcasm 8 data (10%), ambiguous statements 7 data (8%), irrelevant statement 6 data (8%), and metaphors 3 data (4%).
