Abstract

Bamboo, one of the non-timber forest products, is promising in climate change mitigation strategy due to its ability to remove CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. However, the allometric model to estimate the biomass and carbon of bamboo is still limited. The research aimed to develop the allometric model using the diameter as the predictor. The materials for destructive sampling were 30 culms of yellow ampel bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris var. striata). A power model was used to analyze data in order to develop an allometric model. Furthermore, data validation was used to leave one out cross-validation (LOOCV), and assessing the difference between predicted and observed values used t-test. The results showed that bamboo biomass was allocated in culms, branches, and leaves at 48.14, 27.66, and 24.20%, respectively. Moreover, the percentage carbon content of culms, branches, and leaves was 55.64%, 50.67%, and 48.48%, respectively. The best allometric model to estimate total biomass was lnWD = -1.846 + 2.218 lnD and to estimate carbon stock was lnC = -2.504 + 2.225 lnD. In conclusion, the diameter at 60 cm from the base (D60) was the best predictor, and adding the predictor length of culm did not improve the allometric model significantly. Moreover, the predictor D0 – Dbh (1.3 m) did not differ significantly in estimating above-ground biomass and carbon stock. Furthermore, for practical purpose, the Dbh is recommended for use in measuring bamboo diameter in the field.

Abstract

Diameter-height relationship model is generally developed to facilitate the quantification of tree height at the individual level. However, the model’s reliability principally varies due to the influence of certain factors like site quality and type of species. Thus, a site species-specific model is recommended to support sustainable forest management. This study aims to evaluate the best-fit model for estimating the tree height of Shorea assamica in the secondary tropical rainforest, South Borneo. Data from forest inventory consisting of 1,440 tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and height measurements were used to evaluate five alternative models, i.e., Linear, Power, Exponential, Sigmoid, and Gompertz. These data were randomly split into two datasets, i.e., initial model development (1,009 trees) and model validation (431 trees). The model reliability was assessed and ranked using the coefficient of determination (R2), residual standard error (RSE), akaike information criterion (AIC), mean absolute error (MAE), and root means square error (RMSE). The results of the study obtained an average tree diameter of 42.8 cm with the inverval of 22-99 cm and a mean tree height of 16.6 m with the distribution of 11-31 m. The Power model showed the best fit to explain the relationship model between the diameter and height of the S. assamica with an R2 of 74% and an RMSE of 1.72 m. It indicated Power model could facilitate more efficient tree height estimation of S. assamica in the study site

Abstract

Forest carbon dynamic modeling for estimating the carbon stock in short rotation coppice bioenergy plantation in Hungary will be vital for better comprehending the role of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and poplar (Populus sp.) in carbon dioxide sequestration from the atmosphere. The research aims were to estimate the potential carbon stock and describe the carbon distribution of the short rotation coppice bioenergy plantation above and below ground. Various sources were used to acquire parameterization data for developing forest carbon dynamic models. CO2FIX modeling V.3.2 was utilized in the data analysis to estimate the total carbon stock in biomass, soil, harvested wood products, and bioenergy compartments. Modeling has been around for 45 years. In this research, the total carbon stock of black locust and poplar at the end of the simulation period was 64.13 and 131.08 MgC.ha-1, respectively. The average carbon allocation above and below ground for black locust and poplar was 0.76, 19.76, 1.80, and 21.67 MgC.ha-1, respectively. In conclusion, poplar outperformed black locust regarding carbon storage in the short rotation coppice bioenergy plantation. Below ground carbon allocation was much higher than above ground. Therefore, more attention should be paid on below ground allocation through environmentally friendly soil management. Abstract

Background: Risk factors of metabolic syndromes develop in childhood and tacks across life, which may lead them to a higher risk of getting cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. A healthy diet and being physically active are supposed to modify the risk of metabolic syndromes (MetS). However, those observations primarily work in adult samples and the biological mechanisms that link that behavioral factor and MetS in children and adolescents still need to be explored. Asian people are more likely to get MetS than their white counterparts, but study in Malay-Austronesia children is minimal.   Objectives: This study aims to comprehensively review and appraise studies that elucidate biological factors (insulin-like growth factor-1 and adiponectin) that possibly mediate the relationship between those risk factors and MetS in Malay-Austronesia children. Methods: The search will be performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and local databases Garuda (Garba Rujukan Digital, Indonesian) and Mycite (Malaysian citation index). All prospective cohort studies that examine the association of one of the behavioral factors (dietary intakes OR physical activity) AND one of the biological factors (Insulin-like growth factor OR adiponectin) with MetS or its components in healthy children with the exposures start from the age of 1 and 12 years of age and outcomes begin from 1 year and two months until the age of 18 years old are eligible. Only literature in English and local languages from inception to 31 December 2023 that match eligibility criteria will be included. National Institute of Health tool for observational studies will be used to assess the quality of included studies. This work was registered to PROSPERO CRD42023471481.   Results: The findings may shed light on how the predefined biological factors mediate those behavioural factors on MetS in children. The findings will also be published in a peer-reviewed journal. Conclusion: This review utilizes relevant databases to optimize the searching of eligible studies. Eligible studies will be extracted by more (four) researchers who work independently with a predefined data extraction template. There are possibility some studies report significant finding on IGF-1 binding protein instead of total IGF-1 or its molar ratio will challenge the statistical analysis.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Peer Mentoring, Screen Time, Anak Prasekolah, Edukasi Non-Digital.  ABSTRACT Excessive screen time among preschool children is a common problem in urban areas. In RW 001 RT 02, Kramat Subdistrict, Central Jakarta, 75% of children aged 3-6 years were reported to have screen time exceeding on hour per day. This condition may hinder children’s cognitive, social-emotional, and behavioral development, particularly when adequate non-digital activities are not available at home or within the community. This community service program aimed to reduce screen time among preschool children by providing community based non-digital educational activities through the empowerment of mosque-based adolescents as peer mentors. The program was implemented through five stages: (1) coordination and socialization, (2) training of adolescent peer mentors, (3) development of non-digital educational media, (4) implementation of educational play sessions, and (5) monitoring and evaluation. A total of 12 adolescents participated in the training and developed three types of non-digital educational media, including busy books, sensory play materials, and storytelling cards. Twelve mosque-based adolescents were trained as peer mentors, and three educational play sessions involved eight preschool children. Following the intervention, 30% of the participating children experienced a reduction in screen time to less than two hours per day. The program also enhanced adolescents skills in child facilitation, strengthened non-digital play activities, and established a youth forum to support program sustainability. The community-based peer mentoring model represents an effective and innovative approach to facilitating non-digital educational activities and reducing screen time among preschool children. Keywords: Peer Mentoring, Screen Time, Preschool Children, Non-Digital Education.
