Abstract

The rise of generative AI has significantly transformed the creative process, altering artistic workflows and redefining the human role in artmaking. While some artists resist this shift, engaging with machine intelligence has become increasingly inevitable in today’s digital landscape. This paper explores the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence on artistic practices and how such disruption may benefit rather than hinder creativity. Grounded in Jean Baudrillard’s concept of the hyperreal—particularly his theory of third-order simulation—it examines how AI generates realities that never existed but are perceived as real. These pseudo-realities challenge traditional notions of authenticity and memory in art. Through a performative research method and interdisciplinary approach, the author proposes the concept of ‘re-invocation’—a process of reclaiming the authority of human memory in collaboration with AI. This process is structured in iterative stages involving both human intention and algorithmic intervention. The study demonstrates that incorporating non-human memory has become an unavoidable aspect of art production in the generative AI era. Ultimately, it argues that re-invoking human memory through AI collaboration may offer a critical and innovative foundation for contemporary artistic expression.

Abstract

“Mouthwashing” is a game that has achieved many prestigious awards and nominations just within a few months after its’ release on 24th September 2024. This horror game was conceptualized and written by Johanna Kasurinen which then got developed to a game by Wrong Organ Studio. While it’s nothing new, it’s still rare to find a female game creator and even rarer is when a game made by women has achieved as many awards as “Mouthwashing” had. This research is a critical reading of the female role in the game “Mouthwashing” and how a female’s view is applied in her works. This is qualitative research with the data taken from a game playthrough video and interview articles with Kasurinen. The main theory used for this research is the female gaze theory by Laura Mulvey. In the game, there’s only one female character named Anya whose role is quite significant both in gameplay function and the overall theme. Kasurinen herself had stated in interviews that she often looks back upon herself while writing characters that aren’t only not good, but also human. In conclusion, despite the strong female gaze aspect, the narration of the overall game doesn’t fit into the feminist category.

Abstract

Abstract

Photography has established itself as a dominant force in contemporary art, yet its boundaries are continuously challenged by experimental practices that merge traditional photographic principles with elements drawn from fine art traditions, such as painting. This presents a critical issue: how can photography evolve conceptually and aesthetically without losing its fundamental identity? This research aims to develop a framework for creating photographic artworks that explore the representational limits of the medium through bold experimentation while preserving its core principles. Employing G. Sullivan’s framework of interpretation, structure, and critical inquiry, the study examines how experimental practices transform photography into photographic imagery, pushing the medium to its conceptual and aesthetic vanishing points. The findings reveal that at these boundaries, photographic imagery transcends traditional representation and evolves into an ideological foundation, demonstrating the medium’s capacity for profound conceptual expression. Despite these transformations, the study concludes that experimentation does not compromise the essential nature of photography—its unique ability to evoke ostensibly truthful memories. By identifying and analyzing these dynamics, the research underscores the enduring relevance and adaptability of photography in contemporary art, highlighting its potential to navigate new creative frontiers while maintaining its intrinsic connection to reality.
