Abstract

This study aims to show how the difficulties faced by English students from Sangihe in learning English, especially in terms of speaking ability. This research was done by using qualitative method. The data comes from Sangihe students that is currently studying in English Education Department in Universitas Negeri Manado. In collecting the data the researcher used interview technique which involves 7 students that are originated from Sangihe. The data was analyzed by using Miles & Huberman’s method; data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The result of the study shows that mother tongue does affect students’ learning ability especially in learning speaking of English language. It shows that mother tongue impacts students psychologically as they feel afraid and not confident in speaking English. Furthermore, it affects the student speaking ability as they find it harder to learn English grammar and vocabulary while having Sangihe as their mother tongue, and, their environment also affects them as they found people are commenting if they falsely utter an English word. It can be concluded that mother tongue does affect someone’s ability in speaking English psychologically, grammatically and environmentally. Psychologically, it makes the student shy and not confident. Grammatically, it affects their pronunciation and environmentally, it affects their behavior of being criticized

Abstract

This research aims at revealing the perception of the millennial generation in Pinamorongan village towards the use of Tontemboan language. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques in this research used a questionnaire. For data analysis technique used in this research is from Miles and Huberman (1984) in Sugiyono (2015: 330), namely: Data Reduction, Data Display, Conclusion / Verification.Based on the results of the research that has been done, it can be seen that the people in Pinamorongan village, especially the millennial generation, rarely use the Tontemboan language because of the times and it has not been preserved until now. therefore there must be awareness from all people, both young and old, to be able to love culture and in particular to continue to preserve the Tontemboan language in Pinamorongan village

Abstract

This research aims at identifying figurative expressions, their types and meaning in online advertisements. This research applied descriptive method. The subject of this research was advertisements phrases and sentences in online shop advertisements especially that released in Youtube. Based on the findings, It can be concluded that in advertisements, figurative languages are contained. There are various types such as hyperbole, metonimy, metaphor and simile found in online advertisements especially those are accessible in Youtube social platform in video-based database. Each kind of figurative language has different frequency as discovered. Hyperbole has in 15 data (75%), simile has 1 data (5%), metaphor is found in 2 data (10%) and metonimy has 2 data (10%). It is seen that hyperbole has the highest frequency and simile becomes the lowest. Persuasive sentences in online ads are sentences that aim to convince and persuade the reader or listener to carry out the idea expressed in the sentence about something. In making advertisements, people also have to use this type of persuasive sentence because so that readers or listeners feel persuaded to accept the offers in the advertisement. It is a must to pay attention to the use of language which is very important for the success of advertisements in the eyes of the public. The language used in advertisements must be able to be a presentation to the public so that they are interested in something being advertised. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the video media can improve students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 7 Tondano. The strategy for this review utilizes pre and posttest (one gathering pre-test pos-test) plan. Based on the results of the finding and discussion chapter, using video media to improve student vocabulary is effective, because the result of the research on T-test which is the T observed 8.013 > T table 2. 390. And the result of average mean in pretest before the treatment is 70.00 and the result of posttest after the treatment is 86.75 have significant differences. From all the results of the research, it can be concluded that there are significant differences between students who are taught using video media and those who only use confessional methods. Encourage teachers to use video as a medium for teaching and learning activity.

Abstract

This study is carried to describe the father’s roles depicted by the main character in the movie "I AM SAM" by Jessi Nelson.  The study is focused on the father’s role depicted by Sam as Lucy’s father who is psychologically retarded. This research applies qualitative research design.  In carrying out this research, the data are obtained from the movie by Jessi Nelson entitled I am Sam as primary source and also supported by other relevant references such as books, documents and web sources as secondary sources. In doing the data analysis, the researcher uses objective approach. The result shows that Sam is a good father figure for Lucy whose roles are influential although in his disability namely assisting and giving affection, fighting for custody, seeking lawyer in court and motivating to socialize. He also doesn't want to force perfection since he is retarded but does not lower his spirit to rasie Lucy the daughter. Sam puts forward about how parents treat their children. Here it can be seen how a person's intellectual capacity or IQ does not hinder the affection that parents give to their children, as well as affection for other people. The main thing every child raised by his parents is in need of love and a mentally retarded person is not deterred from giving that.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to reveal the effectiveness of using Kim’s memory game in increasing students’ vocabulary. This research was pre-experimental research using quantitative research with one group pre-test and post-test design. Population of this research were students of SMP Negeri 3 Kombi and the sample were VIII grade students in academic year 2019/2020 and the total number of the sample were 15 students. The data were collected through multiple choice test. The data of this research were analysed statistically using mean score formula X̅ . The result of the data analysis showed that the highest score in pre-test was 88 and the lowest was 40. The highest score in post-test was 96 and the lowest was 70. The mean score of pre-test was 65.33 and the mean score of post-test was 81.86. The improvement was 16.53 from the pre-test until the post-test. It was indicated that the used of Kim’s Memory game was effective to improve students’ Vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out whether using mind mapping technique can increase students' vocabulary or not. It was conducted at SMP N 2 Bitung. The subject in this study was Class V11-4, academic year 2017/2018, which consisted of 35 students. This research was a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test-post-test. Pre-test is the test which was given to the students before treatment to find out students' vocabulary stock. Post-test is the test which was given to the students to find out the students' achievement after treatment or teaching them by using mind mapping technique. The findings showed that the students' score in post-test were higher than the pre-test. The result of the data analysis revealed that the mean score of post-test (82) was higher than the pre-test (49). In addition the standard deviation of pre-test was slightly higher (7.05) than the standard deviation of post-test (5.71). This indicated that the use of mind mapping technique increased students' vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the actions of racial discrimination committed by white people against black people in The Help. This research used qualitative method, in terms of using words or text. In conducting this research, the data are collected from primary and secondary sources. The primary source is the novel entitled The Help written by Kathryn Stockett. The second sources are some related books and articles from the internet, that are supporting this research. The result of this study is presented descriptively. As the result of this research, the researcher found that there are many actions of racial discrimination reflected in The Help. It can be seen in some several sections. First, there is a Discriminatory Law namely Jim Crow Law of the Southern United States. Second, the Discriminatory Stereotypes that the white people created about the black people such as, Blacks are dirty, Black people are Thieves, Black People as Diseases, and Black People are Dumb. And the last is the Discrimination in Public Services, that can be found in residential area, library, education, health services, voting, and public transportation.

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal affixes' form and meaning in Tombulu language tenses, especially on past, present, and future tenses. Descriptive qualitative method used with applying Arikunto's procedure of collecting data which were interview and documentation. While, in analyzing data used Miles & Huberman which consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. This study showed that there were different functions of Affixes in the tenses of Tombulu language and English. The simple past tense was Infix -im- and -in-, which were placed after vocal or consonant phonemes. Simple present tense with Prefix mah- which was located to the beginning of the word. Simple future tense with Infix -um-, which was placed after vocal or consonant phonemes. Especially for the Infix -um- and -im-, if it was combined with a root word that begins with the consonant phonemes /p/ and /w/, then there was a change where the Infix -um- à (u)m and the infix -im- à nim. Affixes in Tombulu language tenses had different functions of affixes in English.

Abstract

The research has the purpose of revealing the mental strength or mentality of college students. This research was done qualitatively which means the data are in the form of words, so there are no diagrams, formulas, or numbers in the data. In executing this research, the researcher used interview technique in revealing the students’ mental strength. The result of the study explained that mental strength is crucial in college life. The condition of the students’ mental strength could greatly impact their well-being, performances in academic and overall success in college life. The factors that affect their mental strength are their courage, toughness patience and endurance in facing the lecturers and their lectures. In the end, it can be concluded that students’ mental strength affects their daily life in the college while the factors affecting their mental are all depending on their ability in enduring the challenges.
