Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine whether the word mapping technique can improve students’ vocabulary. The research involved 20 students from class VIII at SMP N 2 Tompaso. This study is a quantitative research using pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test design. Data were collected using multiple-choice test, each consisting of 15 items. The result reveals a significant improvement in student performance between the pre-test and the post-test. The average score increased from 47,7 in the pre-test to 81,5 in the post-test. This suggests that word mapping technique effectively improves students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 2 Tompaso. Furthermore, students reported that word mapping helped them improve their vocabulary and write descriptive text more effectively. This research recommends using the word mapping technique as an alternative teaching strategy, especially in teaching vocabulary for descriptive texts, to improve students’ vocabulary in school.

Abstract

Teaching English language is a big challenge in Minahasa. Students are still unable to master or even comprehend English even after eleven years learning the language at primary and secondary levels. This research entitled “Tontemboan Affixes Relates to English Tenses” aims to identify, classify and describe the affixes and analyze the similarities and differences of affixes used in both languages, English and Tontemboan. This research used descriptive method, which includes preparation, collecting the data, and analyzing the data. The result showed that some affixes in Totemboan language have different functions of affixes in English. Simple present tense functions the habitual action by adding ma’ before the morpheme, following the verb. The present continuous tense which is formed by adding ma’ as prefix has a global meaning. Past continuous tense indicated by adding the prefix ma’ and simple past tensi indicated by adding a base prefix and infix with the initials are consonant.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the group discussions can improve students' ability to read. This study involved 23 students from class IX A at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano. This study is a quantitative research using pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test design. Data from the pre-test and post-test were collected using multiple choice tests, both of which had 15 items. The findings of this study showed a significant difference in achievement between the pre-test and post-test. The highest pre-test score obtained by students was 60, while the highest post-test score obtained by students was 90. It can be concluded that the effect of group discussion can improve students' ability in reading at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano. In addition, students reported that group discussion helped them in improving each their ability to read well. This study recommends that the group discussion method can be used as a learning alternative in teaching reading especially in English reading to improve the ability of each student in school.
