Abstract

Pakkat is a rattan tuber that is still very young and tastes a bit bitter. Young Rottan plants known as "Pakkat" growing in the wilderness are consumed as fresh vegetables or food additives eaten with rice is a traditional food. Mandailing. This study used data that was analyzed descriptively qualitatively using ethnographic methods which aimed to describe completely and thoroughly the young rattan plant "Pakkat" in the Mandailing community in Matondang village, using the approach of observation and interviews with the local community. In the process of collecting field data, the researcher met several informants who knew about Pakkat knowledge. In conducting this research, the authors obtained field data that Pakkat is a typical Mandailing food which is widely believed that those who eat Pakkat will have a high appetite. In addition, Pakkat can also help reduce various types of risks such as heart disease, gout, colds, diarrhea, sugar.

Abstract

ABSTRAKFungsi utama bahasa adalah sebagai alat untuk berkomunikasi. Disebut sebagai alat berkomunikasi, sebab melalui bahasalah (baik lisan maupun tulisan) gagasan, buah pikiranseperti pengalamanbaru, hubungan sosial dan sebagainya disampaikan.Proses pemerolehan bahasa pada anak memiliki beberapa persamaan aspek, dimana anak dapat mengucapkan kata-kata dengan menggunakan beberapa huruf dalam bentuk vowel dan consonant dan perbedaan dalam menghasilkan kata-kata dalam bunyi yang berbeda. Dalam pemerolehan bahasa anak, perkembangan bahasa mereka begitu berpengaruh terhadap para pengasuh dan orang-orang disekitar mereka, oleh karena itu, perhatian yang khusus harus diberikan kepada para anak-anak. Pada usia satu tahun anak-anak mulai menghasilkan kata-katanya.Key words: language acquisition, words and meaning, one word utterances, and two word utterances.

Abstract

This paper described the mechanism of valence change in Mandailing language. The concept of valence refers to the number of arguments a verb that serves as a predicate in a clause can present. Changing the valence of verbs in Mandailing through a causative process causes the verbs to experience an increase in valence. This study was included a qualitative descriptive study, in which the method is a study of language typology and the data analyzed based on the problems discussed using the method Agih. The results of the data analysis of this study are presented using an informal method in the form of explanation or exposure using ordinary words or verbal language. The determinants used by this method are the language elements in the Mandailing language. The purpose of this study was to find what types of verbs in the Mandailing language can experience changes in valence, symptoms, and their process of change, and the semantic role of these verbs. The data analysis from this study was obtained through the observation method and the proficient method with informants; based on the results of the analysis, it can be concluded that changes in the valence of the Mandailing language occur mainly in intransitive, transitive, transitive verbs, which are grouped into symptoms that cause valence reduction and valence expansion. This study is also expected to inspire some researchers interested in the mechanism of valence change in Mandailing language, either micro or macro.

Abstract

This article is a development study that relies on some of the acquired literacy described. Using a qualitative descriptive approach. This discussion is about using the canva application as the Indonesian teaching media for foreign speakers. The learning media is indispensable to a teacher in sustaining and supporting teaching in education. The media is the tool teachers use in teaching, in addition to the use of books or methods of speaking, teachers are expected to have different learning mediums and adapt the materials and conditions to each student. At the present time, technological growth is accelerating, everyone is expected to understand the technology to support all activities it provides, as well as within the realm of education. Teachers and learners can utilize technology-based learning media one of them is a canva application. Canva is an online app that provides an intriguing design of the template, the features, and the categories given therein. With varied, intriguing designs, making the learning process is less boring. Using a canva application, learners can be easier to understand the material because it is presented with as attractive and easy-to-understand pictures or videos, to train both teacher and learner creativity, and skills to be acquired for learners so that this medium can also be used in the various spheres of life.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine if Quizizz is a useful tool for developing student's reading comprehension for higher education. The present study employs a quantitative research methodology to examine the proposed research issue. The sample size for the 2020 academic year consisted of 30 students majoring in English education, selected using purposive random sampling by the researchers. The paired sample t-test indicated a substantial improvement in students' reading comprehension after the researchers administered treatment, with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. The results demonstrate that the use of Quizizz as a teaching tool in the classroom has an important beneficial effect on students' reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability to read fluently in learning English, especially aspects of reading skills using the demonstration method for third grade students at Talitakum Private Elementary School. This type of research is pre-experimental research which only involves one class and is carried out in 2 meetings. Experimental units are conducted total sample which involved all grade III students. The results showed that: (1) student learning outcomes before being given treatment based on an average score reaching 33.3% were in the low category. Being in the high category, this can be concluded after being given treatment and obtaining a score of 83.3%. (2) Then, a figure of 76.9% is obtained for the average student involvement, which shows that students are active in their education. (3) The use of the demonstration model in this class is approved; this is shown by the positive response of students of 77.2%. Furthermore, it was found that the calculated t value was 4.5 with a frequency (df) of 22-1=21, this shows a significance level of 5%. This is in accordance with the t test procedure for carrying out inferential statistical analysis, as shown in t table 2. The null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted because t count > t table at the 5% significance level. Talitakum Private Elementary School has an increasing influence on the ability to read fluently in learning English using the demonstration method.

Abstract

This research was directed to analyze (1) the types of code switching used in classroom during the English course (2) the reasons why teachers and students at SMA Negeri 1 DELI TUA using code switching in class and (3) the effect of code switching. The researcher adopted descriptive- qualitative method since the data dealt with words instead of numbers and applied Hoffman theory to analyze the problems. Technique for collecting data used by researcher was triangulations, those are observation, questionnaires, and interview. Intra sentential switching, Establishing continuity with previous speaker , and Emblematic got 22,22%, and each Inter sentential switching, Intra lexical and Involving a Change of Pronunciation are 11,11% percentages. There are several code switching occurred on the class and researcher placed based on the functions and they are 57,14% of Repetitive function, 28,57% of Interjection and the last is 14,28% for Quoting somebody else is found during the observation.

Abstract

Writing proficiency in English is crucial for students, yet errors often occur in their written narratives. This study investigated how the use of Grammarly Application can enhance students' narrative texts. Employing an experimental quantitative research design, the study conducted random sampling among students from a State Middle School in Batubara. The experimental group comprised 31 students who used Grammarly Application, while the control group had 31 students without access to the tool. Pre- and post-tests using writing samples were employed to collect data. The independent sample T-test was utilized to test the hypothesis that Grammarly impacts students' writing skills, yielding a significant result of 0.000 0.05. These findings reject the null hypothesis (Ho) and support the alternative hypothesis (Ha), indicating that Grammarly Application effectively improved students' narrative writing abilities. This study suggested that teachers can utilize Grammarly Application to enhance English writing instruction, enabling students to self-assess and revise their written work more effectively. Grammarly facilitates teachers' provision of constructive feedback and correction on students' writing, thereby enhancing overall writing proficiency in English classrooms. In addition to facilitating self-assessment and revision, Grammarly empowers students with instant feedback on grammar, style, and clarity, fostering a deeper understanding of English language conventions. This automated assistance allows teachers to focus more on higher-order writing skills, such as organization and argumentation, further enriching the learning experience and improving students' overall writing competence in English

Abstract

The research that has been conducted is entitled “The Effect of Falou Application in Improving Students’ Speaking Skill”, with the background being that the school want to implement English as the language in the school environment, but students’ speaking skill are still low. This research used quantitative methods with pre-test, treatment, and post-test design approaches in the experimental class and control class. The population in this study were students of class X Madrasah Aliyah Al – Washliyah Tebing Tinggi. This study used sample of two classes, namely experimental class as many as 30 students from X IPA-1 and control class as many as 30 students from X IPS-2. This study used a lottery method with random sampling style to select the sample. The validity processing tool used IBM Statistics Version 29. The result of this study revealed that there was a significant of using Falou Application in improving students’ speaking skill. This can be seen from the increase in the result of test, namely a Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.01 < 0.05 or t count (19.778) higher than t table (0.361). Based on the findings above, it can be concluded that the use of “Falou Application” has a significant effect on students’ speaking skill of Students in Madrasah Aliyah Al – Washliyah Tebing Tinggi.
