Abstract

Emotional regulation is a central component of early childhood development, particularly for children aged 5–6 years who are transitioning toward formal schooling. Recent advances in digital technology have substantially increased young children’s exposure to screen-based media, commonly referred to as screen time, prompting concerns about its implications for emotional development. This study examines the relationship between screen time and emotional regulation among children aged 5–6 years using a quantitative correlational design. Participants included children aged 5–6 years, with parents and classroom teachers serving as respondents. Screen time data were collected through parent-reported questionnaires, while emotional regulation was assessed via teacher questionnaires and structured observations. Correlational analyses revealed a significant association between screen time and emotional regulation: higher and poorly regulated screen time exposure was linked to lower levels of emotional regulation. These findings underscore the importance of intentional adult supervision and balanced digital media management to support healthy emotional development in early childhood.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve early childhood education (ECE) teachers’ knowledge and skills in understanding disaster mitigation through a safe play approach. The program was conducted at IGTKI Depok District, Special Region of Yogyakarta, involving 28 ECE teachers using a one-group pre-test–post-test design. The training was implemented through three main methods: lectures, assignments, and group projects. Lectures were used to provide participants with knowledge related to disaster mitigation concepts, while assignments and projects facilitated participants in designing educational games based on disaster preparedness. The results showed an increase in participants’ average scores from 57.50 in the pre-test to 80.00 in the post-test, with an improvement percentage of 39.13%. In addition, participants successfully developed several disaster mitigation-based educational game designs, including preparedness-themed snakes and ladders, evacuation puzzles, and disaster mitigation songs. These findings indicate the potential effectiveness of the safe play approach in supporting teachers to integrate disaster preparedness concepts into early childhood learning activities and contribute to creating more disaster-resilient school environments.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study examines the effectiveness of counter-linguistic strategies implemented through interactive storytelling to address the imitation of age-inappropriate slang among early childhood students driven by massive digital media exposure. Data gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation reveal that creative narratives featuring polite characters effectively motivate children to adopt correct diction naturally. The two-way interaction inherent in storytelling allows children to clarify the meanings of slang terms encountered on social media, while the repetitive use of positive vocabulary within the narrative helps internalize politeness values without being preachy. The results demonstrate that this strategy successfully reduces slang usage by replacing it with more communicative and polite alternatives. The success of this intervention relies heavily on the teacher's creativity in weaving target vocabulary into engaging plots, leading children to voluntarily switch to more respectful language in their daily interactions, thereby fostering better character development and linguistic etiquette.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of optimizing playdough-based activities to enhance fine motor skills in children aged 4–5 years. Employing a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, the research involved 28 children divided into an experimental group (, structured playdough intervention) and a control group (, conventional paper-based media). Data were collected using structured observation scales and performance rubrics, and analyzed via descriptive statistics, N-Gain scores, and independent t-tests. Results indicate a significant disparity in motor skill acquisition between the groups (). The experimental group’s post-test score significantly increased to 82.50 (from 56.56), yielding an N-Gain of 60.33% (Moderately Effective). Conversely, the control group only achieved an N-Gain of 24.18% (Ineffective). These findings demonstrate that the tactile resistance of playdough provides superior stimulation for the hand’s intrinsic muscles compared to traditional methods. Consequently, early childhood educators should integrate structured playdough activities into the core curriculum rather than treating them as elective play. Future research should implement longitudinal tracking to determine the long-term impact of these motor gains on formal writing readiness.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the process of fine motor development in early childhood through the “Dancing on Paper” intervention, focusing on how participation in the activity supports the development of fine motor skills within an early childhood education setting. Employing a qualitative single-case study design, this research examines changes in children’s physical dexterity and coordination through a structured multi-day artistic intervention. Data were collected from five selected participants to observe key indicators of fine motor skills, including finger muscle strength, hand–eye coordination, and movement flexibility. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that participation in finger painting activities enhances children’s ability to control fine muscle movements and supports their readiness for subsequent academic tasks, such as writing. The findings suggest that the sensory-rich characteristics of the “Dancing on Paper” activity provide effective stimulation for early childhood fine motor development. This study contributes to early childhood education practices by highlighting creative arts activities as an effective pedagogical strategy for supporting children’s physical development.

Abstract

Responsibility character development in early childhood has become an important issue in Islamic education because it is closely related to moral formation, self-regulation, and children’s social readiness. Although studies on Islamic character education have increased, no review has specifically synthesized strategies for developing responsibility in Islamic early childhood education institutions. Therefore, this study analyzes strategies for developing responsibility in early childhood within Islamic educational institutions using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The methodology followed the PRISMA 2020 protocol by analyzing 13 selected articles from 542 initial literature sources identified through national and international databases. The findings indicate that responsibility development strategies in early childhood can be classified into four main themes: habituation strategies, reinforcement and direct experience strategies, family roles and parenting patterns, and the cultivation of moral and religious values. Habituation through routine activities, role modeling, and daily discipline emerged as the most dominant approach. Experience-based learning methods, such as project-based learning, cooking classes, storytelling, and token economy, effectively enhance children’s sense of responsibility through active engagement in real-life activities. The findings also reveal that parenting styles, parental involvement, and Islamic school culture significantly influence the formation of children’s responsibility. Furthermore, research in this field demonstrates a paradigm shift from behavioristic approaches to constructivist and socio-emotional approaches that emphasize direct experience, self-regulation, and the internalization of moral and spiritual values.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a learning medium called POPBUL (Pop‑Up Badminton) and evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing the critical‑thinking skills of children aged 5–6 years. The research was motivated by young learners’ low critical‑thinking ability and the lack of engaging, developmentally appropriate learning media. The ADDIE model—analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation—guided the development process. Expert validation and field testing were conducted with 16 group‑B children at TK Dharma Siwi III Surabaya. Instruments included validation sheets, practicality questionnaires, and observation sheets administered before and after using the medium. POPBUL was rated very valid by media experts (87.5 %) and fairly valid by content experts (68.75 %); teacher practicality reached 93 %. Children’s mean score increased from 11.63 (pre‑test) to 16.63 (post‑test). A paired t‑test showed a significant difference (p = 0.000 < 0.05) with an n‑gain of 0.67 (moderate). Therefore, POPBUL is feasible and moderately effective for improving critical thinking in early childhood education.

Abstract

Teacher training is an important strategy for improving the quality of early childhood education particularly in implementing learning approaches that emphasize meaningful experiences. This article aims to describe the evaluation results of an Experiential Creative Learning module training for early childhood education teachers and to examine teachers’ understanding expectations implementation challenges and the initial impact on classroom practices. The training was conducted in Temanggung Regency and involved 30 teachers from playgroup and kindergarten levels who are members of HIMPAUDI. A descriptive approach was employed with data collected through post training evaluation questionnaires. The findings indicate that most teachers demonstrated a good level of understanding of the Experiential Creative Learning concept after participating in the training. Teachers expressed expectations that learning activities would become more meaningful interactive and capable of encouraging children’s active participation and creativity. However several challenges were identified including limited time workload demands shifts in teacher mindset and insufficient institutional and facility support. These findings suggest that Experiential Creative Learning training has the potential to strengthen meaningful learning practices in early childhood education although sustained mentoring and systemic support are necessary to ensure long term implementation.
