Abstract

Applied physics courses are essential for pre-service physics teachers (PsPTs), but they often encounter challenges in pursuing this educational pathway. This study aims to identify the problems and learning elements that PsPTs need in applied physics learning using the McKillip discrepancy model. The data were collected using questionnaires and bibliometric techniques. A total of 23 PsPTs participated in the study. Additionally, 1,000 articles were consulted as a data source. The data analysis uses descriptive statistics and the VOSviewer software. The first finding is primary issues identified in applied physics learning e.g., the difficulty of locating suitable learning resources, the dearth of in-depth physics comprehension, the absence of visualization like augmented reality (AR), the failure to undertake empirical activities in the laboratory, and global warming and climate change topic were pertinent at the high school level, entailed intricate issues, and were abstract. The second finding is a learning module that is integrated with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and AR is needed by PsPTs. Finally, this need has been paramount over the past decade to meet PsPTs' needs. Thus, the needs analysis results serve as an initial reference point for decision-makers to identify elements and develop integrated STEM and AR applied physics learning modules.

Abstract

Misconceptions are erroneous understandings of concepts that tend to persist and are difficult to change, hindering learning processes and affecting student learning outcomes. In science education, misconceptions frequently occur in highly complex concepts, particularly in temperature, heat, and thermal expansion topics. This occurs because these concepts are abstract and everyday phenomena do not always align with scientific concepts. Therefore, identifying and analyzing student misconceptions becomes crucial. This study aims to analyze students' misconception profiles on temperature, heat, and thermal expansion topics using four tier test instruments. This research employed descriptive quantitative methods with a population of all grade VII advanced students from A-accredited junior high schools in West Padang Panjang District during the second semester of 2025/2026 academic year. The sampling technique used total sampling. The research sample consisted of grade VII advanced students from three schools: SMPN 1, SMPN 2, and SMPN 4 Padang Panjang. The research instrument comprised 19 four tier test questions with four levels: concept answers, answer confidence levels, reasoning for answer selection, and reasoning confidence levels. Results showed an average percentage of students experiencing misconceptions at 24% with low category. The misconception profile revealed two indicators in moderate category: explaining temperature concepts (31.5%) and determining factors affecting heat (32%), while nine other indicators were in low category ranging from 13%-29%. Identified misconception types included false positive, false negative, and pure misconceptions

Abstract

The inadequate capacity of students to recognize and resolve difficulties, particularly with intricate concepts, has emerged as a significant concern in physics education. This project aims to develop a two-tier diagnostic assessment that utilizes augmented reality (AR) flashcards to identify students' challenges in problem-solving. This media-assisted assessment aims to visually represent concepts interactively while examining students' comprehension and the origins of their challenges. The study methodology employs the ADDIE development paradigm, encompassing analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Validation is performed by subject matter and media specialists, subsequently followed by trials with secondary education students. The study equipment comprises validation sheets, answer questionnaires, and diagnostic examinations supplemented by augmented reality flashcards. The study demonstrates that the two-tier diagnostic test augmented with AR flashcards effectively identifies students' challenges, particularly in grasping concepts and problem-solving processes, as indicated by a Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of 0.89. This media-assisted assessment enhances student engagement, as evidenced by survey findings indicating that students perceive it as easier to comprehend physics concepts through the instrument. This research is anticipated to motivate educators and institutions to create more creative AR-based learning media for evaluations and interactive learning
