Abstract

Character education is a purposeful, proactive attempt to develop good character in students or, more simply, to teach students about the right and the wrong. In relation to character education, the purposes of this study were to find out teachers’ perceptions on character education and their strategies to implement it in the classroom. In addition, this study also investigated the teachers’ problems in implementing character education and their proposed solution. The participants of this study were two teachers of English at one of public senior high school in Palembang and the students from two classes which taught by the two teachers. The data of this study were collected through questionnaire, interviews, classroom observation and document review. The result of this study showed that the teachers agreed that character education was important to be applied during teaching and learning program through the strategies such as group discussion or individual assignment. Students’ personal characters and behaviors stated by the teachers as the problem in teaching the character education and having a communication with students and observing them during teaching and learning process were mention as the ways to solve the problem.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate English reading motivation, reading strategy, reading attitude and reading interest of junior high school students (Year 7, 8 and 9) in Palembang. The sample of this study was three-hundred students selected randomly from ten schools. In accordance with quantitative research design, English reading motivation, reading strategy, reading attitude and reading interest questionnaires were used as the instruments to collect the data which were statistically analyzed. The findings of this study showed that the students demonstrated a high level of English reading motivation; specifically, their instrumental motivation for reading was higher than the integrative one. Next, there was a high use of reading strategies, with Problem-Solving reading strategy as the highly used ones. The finding also revealed that the students demonstrated a positive reading attitude and their reading interest showed their reading preference was adventure stories. Keywords: English reading motivation, reading strategies, reading attitude, reading interest, self-efficacy, junior high school students

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation among reading attitude, the use of internet and reading comprehension of English Study Program Students of PGRI University. Questionnaires and a test were administered to the sample (N=152). Pearson product-moment correlation was used to analyse the data. The result showed a significant correlation between the students‟reading attitude and their reading comprehension (r=.562), the students‟ use of internet and reading comprehension (r =.200). The findings also revealed the correlation between the aspects of reading attitude and reading comprehension: prevailing feelings about reading (r=.553), action readiness for reading (r =.536) and evaluative beliefs about reading (r = .442). Furthermore, to reading comprehension, regression analysis discovered that reading attitude contributed 31.5%, two aspects of reading attitude (prevailling feelings about reading and action readiness for reading) contributed 33.7% and the use of internet contributed 4%.Key words: reading attitude, the use of internet, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to find out whether or not: (1) there was any significant improvement in speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 14 Palembang after they were taught by using Readers Theatre, (2) there was any significant improvement in each aspect of speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 14 Palembang after they were taught by using Readers Theatre, and (3) there was any significant difference in speaking skill between students who were taught by using Readers Theatre and those who were not taught by using Readers Theatre. The sample of this study was 60 eleventh grade students of SMA N 14 Palembang, who were divided into control and expreimental groups, and each group had 30 students. To collect the data, each group was given a pretest and a posttest. The data were analysed using paired sample t test and independent sample t-test. The result showed: (1) there was a significant improvement in students‟ speaking skill of the experimental group after they were taught by using Readers Theatre (mean diff=22.10; p-value=.000), (2) the mean score of each aspect of speaking skill in the posttest was higher than in the pretest and p-values were <0.05 and (3) the mean difference of posttest of experimental group was significantly higher than the control group (p-value=.000). In conclusion, Readers Theatre can be used to improve student‟s speaking skill.Key words: Improving Speaking Skill, Readers Theatre, eleventh graders

Abstract

The objectives of this study were (1) to find out whether or not there was asignificant difference in students’ functional reading achievement before and afterthey were taught through Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and (2) to find outwhether or not there was a significant difference in functional reading achievementbetween the students who were taught through CSR and those who were not. Thisstudy was a quasi-experimental research method that applied non-equivalent controlgroup research design. The population of this study was the eighth grade students ofone of the junior high schools in Palembang in academic year 2015 - 2016 and thenumber of sample was 76 students, that was selected by using purposive samplingtechnique. The data of this study were collected by using a pre-test and a post-testand were analyzed statistically by using paired and independent sample t-test. Theresults of this study revealed that (1) there was a significant difference in students’functional reading achievement before and after they were taught through CSR(mean diff=18.87, and ρ-value=.000) and (2) there was a significant difference infunctional reading achievement between the students who were taught through CSRand those who were not (mean diff=12.11, and ρ-value=.000). Therefore, it can beconcluded that CSR is effective in improving the students' functional readingachievement.

Abstract

Curriculum has mandated that communicative competence is the main objective of teaching English in Indonesia. Therefore, target culture is embedded with language in classroom. Globalization, in other hand, has imposed teachers to reconsider the inclusion of local culture. Reading material is one of the medium to promote local culture. This paper elaborates schemata theory and cultural aspects included in reading materials utilized by students.

Abstract

The strategies are needed in teaching process; the teacher must decide the strategies bestsuited for the writing skills of each process. Therefore, Graphic Organizers and GuidedWriting strategies are strategy to assist the students in writing process. The objectives of thestudy were aimed in improving the student’s writing achievement by using Graphic Organizerand Guided Writing strategies and highlighting the significant interaction effect of GraphicOrganizers and Guided Writing strategy and Students’ Reading Levels on WritingAchievement. Sixty students of PGMI Program at IAIN Raden Intan Lampung were chosenrandomly based on their reading levels. The data were collected through pretest and posttest.The result showed that there was a significant difference in writing achievement after theywere taught by using Graphic Organizer and they were taught by Guided Writing and betweenthe students who were taught by using Graphic Organizer group and those who were taughtby Guided Writing strategies.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out whether or not there were significantcorrelations between: (1) the students’ perceptions of classroom environment andstudents’ English achievement, (2) each scale of the students’ perceptions ofclassroom environment and students’ English achievement, (3) students’ motivationand students’ English achievement, (4) each scale of the students’ motivation andstudents’ English achievement, (5) predictor variables and criterion variable. Thisstudy also investigated whether or not there were significant contributions of thepredictor variables toward students’ English achievement. This study involved 103students selected randomly from 3 state senior high schools in 3 different subdistrictsin Indralaya. The ‘What Is Happening In this Class (WIHIC) questionnaire’,motivation questionnaire, and an English test were used to collect the data whichwere analyzed statistically by using correlation and multiple regression analyses.The findings showed that there were significant correlations between: (1) thestudents’ perceptions of classroom environment and their English achievement (r=.297), (2) five scales of the students’ perceptions of classroom environment and theirEnglish achievement, (3) the students’ motivation and their English achievement (r=.312), (4) all scales of the students’ motivation and their English achievement, (5)combination of predictor variables and criterion variable (r= .346). There were alsosignificant contributions of: (1) the students’ perceptions of classroom environmentand Teacher Support toward their English achievement, (2) the students’ motivationand Instrumental Motivation toward their English achievement, (3) predictorvariables toward criterion variable. In conclusion, the students’ perceptions ofclassroom environment and students’ motivation were significantly correlated totheir English achievement.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the quality of the newly developed local-content-based instructional graded reading materials for junior high school students in Lubuklinggau. The development of the instructional materials was then analyzed and evaluated in terms of their validity, practicality, and effectiveness using formative evaluation proposed, which consists of self-evaluation, experts review, one-to-one, small group, and field test. The result of expert review showed that the prototype of the product was categorized as having high validity as indicated by the average score of questionnaires on content and construct which was 3.23 (scale 1-4). Moreover, developed instructional reading materials were also considered as highly practical as indicated by the average score of one-to-one evaluation (3.39) and small group evaluation (3.18). Meanwhile, the result of field test evaluation showed that the developed reading comprehension test was highly effective to be used as reading assessment. Meanwhile, the result of field test evaluation shows that developed test could be categorized as effective because there were 20 students (74.07%) out of 27 students in reading comprehension test reached average category which was between 56 and 70. Hence, it was concluded that the developed products, either the test or the teaching materials can become alternative for teaching reading to students whose level of reading is level 3.
