Their understanding of character education in the textbooks they were using now was satisfactory. It can be seen through both teachers and students were aware of dealing with character values in the textbooks that embedded in the teaching and learning materials which can be presented both in form of implicit and explicit but they did not know about 18 character values proposed by the government yet.

Abstract

This study was based on the phenomenon of classroom interaction in enhancing students’ language skills in English classes using the 2013 curriculum. This study investigated the dominant initiation- response and feedback [IRF] patterns and its impact on the interaction between the teacher and the tenth-grade students during classroom spoken discourse. This qualitative research involved a teacher of English and four classes. The data were collected via classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study showed that in the IRF pattern, the most dominant pattern was initiation. The teacher dominated the classroom during the lesson and the IRF pattern had positive impacts on students’ English when the teacher asked questions. The teacher needed to understand what questions students needed to ask to respond well because it must be in line with the 2013 curriculum, which places students at the center of learning. Teachers needed to use more various feedbacks from the IRF pattern. It can be seen from the observation that the teacher did not use feedback much when students responded to the initiation from the teacher because feedback is essential to increase student motivation, confidence, and evaluation.

Abstract

Utilizing technology in the classroom characterizes the 21st century teachers. Therefore, teachers are demanded to be able to use technology in pedagogical practices in order to fulfill their students’ needs facing rapidly digitalized life. This study was designed to investigate the perceptions of a group of in-service English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers who studied at a Teacher Profession Education program at a state university, concerning the application of technology within challenges they faced during their study. This study used qualitative research with narrative approach as a strategy of inquiry. The data were obtained by using a semi-structure interview with the in-service teachers and documentation. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that the participants generally perceived positively the technology integration taught by their university instructors during their study time at the Teacher Profession Education program although there was a negative response when they were firstly introduced with the technology. It might have been caused by their lack of technological knowledge. The result also revealed that the participants found it challenging when it came to the use of novel technology as introduced and applied by their university instructors. In addition, their own integration of technology during their Teaching Practice was a challenge due to the students’ low motivation to engage in the online learning activity which was the mode of learning. The findings of this study suggest that teachers need to advance their skills and knowledge to utilize technology in supporting their pedagogical practices.

Abstract

Online learning is definitely advantageous in this current situation. Due to the technology, the teaching and learning process can continue despite the students and instructor/lecturer located in different places. This study aims to understand student’s self-regulation in online learning particularly for interactions with their lecturer and their peers. To answer the research objectives, qualitative method with narrative approach was applied. The data were collected through open-ended questionnaire focused on self-regulation in online interactions with lecturers and peers. The participants in this study were 12 students from English Education Study Program. The data were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results revealed that students did not notice a significant difference between face-to-face learning and online learning. They regularly interacted with their lecturer and their peers during synchronous and asynchronous learning. They actively initiated the interactions with their lecturer by asking or answering questions and giving opinions. They also actively interacted with peers by discussing academic projects and assignments. Regardless of the type of interactions (student-lecturer and student-student), most of the students showed their active efforts in regulating their interactions with lecturer and peers in online learning.

Abstract

Scaffolding, a teacher’s act that provides adaptive assistance to young learners, is revealed to be effective in some studies. However, scaffolding in online learning is hardly visible. Therefore, this phenomenology study aims to discover the types of scaffolding used in online learning and what teachers’ perceptions and attitudes are towards it. In this study, English teachers from a primary school in Palembang, Indonesia, were chosen as participants. Data were collected using interviews, observation and field notes and were analysed into themes and constantly interpreted using Thematic Analysis. To check the research credibility, member checking was used. The findings claimed that scaffolding in online interaction is infiltrated into internet platforms containing virtual language exposure and collaborative learning where the virtual environment, communication, and brainstorming are crucial points for teachers to be considered in order to scaffold the English for EYL. Teachers are the main educators who assist them to reach lesson goals with cooperation of the parents’ participation in using technology and internet in this Covid-19 pandemic era.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop instructional descriptive reading materials of Bangka local culture in Indonesia, which are valid, practical and have a potential effect for Tour and Travel Study Program students at a vocational school in Bangka Belitung Province. The developed product would be used as supplementary materials to fulfill the students’ needs. This study used the research design proposed by Akker (1999), covering the phases of analysis, design, evaluation, and revision modified by Tessmer (1993). The data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and a reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. In order to determine the validity, practicality, and potential effect of the developed product, a formative evaluation was conducted. Validity was evaluated in experts review related to the content, language, and instructional design. The result showed that the developed product reached a very high validity category with the average score of all aspects evaluated; it was 3.57. The practicality evaluated in one-to-one and small group evaluations were categorized as very high practicality since the average scores of both evaluations were 3.71 and 3.58. After trying out the field test, the developed product was considered to have a high potential effect since 73.91% of the students achieved the required passing grade. Therefore, it could be concluded that it is possible to use the developed product as supplementary materials for teaching reading for the intended students.

Abstract

Having done the online learning mode for the conduct of teaching and learning activities for more than a year as the impact of covid-19 pandemic, this article presents a report on how the students have managed their learning. Specifically, this present study was aimed to describe the three aspects of self-regulation in three types of online interaction: students’ self-regulation in interaction between them and content; students’ self-regulation in interaction between them and their teacher; and students’ self-regulation in interaction between them and their peers. In addition, this present study also looked at the correlation between self-regulation and the students’ academic performance and find out which aspect was significantly correlated with the academic performance. Involving 205 students of a teacher preparation program as the participants and used the Online Self-Regulated Questionnaire (OSRQ) to collect the data, it was found that the average mean score for the online interaction was above 5, suggesting that the students tended to agree with the statements in the three types of online interaction. The finding also revealed that a weak and positive, but not significant correlation existed between the students’ self-regulation of online interaction and their academic achievement.
