Abstract

In the Independent curriculum, it is essential to provide students with diverse learning materials that address global concerns like climate change while also aligning with personal and cultural dimensions, such as the Pancasila Student Profile. This study, conducted at Srijaya Negara High School in Palembang, Indonesia, aimed to understand students' needs for virtual drama scripts that incorporate both climate change and the Pancasila Student Profile themes. Insights were gathered from 36 tenth-grade students, their English teachers, and additional stakeholders through a mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results highlighted a demand from students for more specific and contextually relevant materials. The integration of climate change and Pancasila themes in virtual drama scripts was found to enhance students' motivation in English learning, particularly with the inclusion of technology. Furthermore, these tailored scripts are believed to improve students' knowledge and awareness of both climate change and the values of Pancasila. This research paves the way for the development of virtual drama scripts that not only serve as English reading materials but also support broader educational initiatives in high schools.

Abstract

The transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges in Indonesia, particularly due to limited facilities and the struggle of students to adapt to independent learning modalities. This study investigates the online learning experiences of students in the English Education Study Program at the University of South Sumatra, with three specific objectives: 1) to assess how students managed their online interactions with learning materials, 2) to identify the challenges faced in these interactions, and 3) to propose solutions to overcome these challenges. Data were collected from a sample of 12 students, four from each of the 3rd, 5th, and 7th semesters, with GPAs between 3.51 and 4.00. A questionnaire was administered via Google Forms and disseminated through a WhatsApp group. Findings indicate that despite being well-prepared and organized, students actively sought to resolve issues they encountered, through methods such as conducting experiments and completing both guided and independent tasks. This study offers insights that may help educators develop strategies to promote self-regulated learning among students.

Abstract

Reading literacy has become global concern that Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has conducted Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) reading literacy test to assess what students know and can do in reading. Participating in PISA test since 2000, Indonesian students’ reading literacy has not shown a significant improvement. Because PISA reading literacy test is adapted into language of instruction of each participating country, it is Indonesian students’ reading literacy in Indonesian language which is not satisfactory. Considering the fact that Indonesian fifteen-year-old students study English as a compulsory subject, investigating students’ reading literacy in English is considered important. There has been much research investigating issues in reading achievement in Indonesia, but there are limited studies focussing on PISA reading literacy based on school location, school accreditation, gender, and academic major. Employing survey study design, this study assessed reading literacy of two thousand and two hundred secondary school students sampled from twenty four public secondary schools accredited A+, A, and B in Palembang. Data were obtained using PISA reading literacy test 2009 and were analysed statistically. The findings revealed that students’ English literacy was in level 3 (low category). Students studied at schools in central urban district performed better than those of in peri urban district. Those from secondary schools accredited A+ outperformed their counterparts in schools accredited A and B. Female students performed slightly better than male. Students majoring in science were better than those of majoring in social. The results lead to the conclusion that students’ English literacy achievement should be enhanced using innovating strategies to achieve targeted literacy level that is needed to survive in school academic life.

Abstract

Considering the great responsibility and the role of teachers as educators, teachers must have professional competence and determination to reach the projected educational goal. This competence should be developed continuously by the teachers themselves and/or facilitated by the principal as the leader in the school. Therefore, good leadership is required to guide and direct the teachers as should. The principal’s leadership quality can be seen in the success of the school he/she leads. This study examines the school principal’s leadership and English teachers’ professionalism at a private A-accredited high school in Palembang. A qualitative method in case study design was utilized in this study. A school principal, a vice-principal, and three teachers of English were involved as the participants of the study. The data were collected through interviews and observations and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that the school principal’s leadership plays a significant role in enhancing teachers’ English professionalism. The principal’s leadership styles are transformational and participative, which are characterized by vision articulation, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. The study also found that teachers of English at this school are highly professional. They have a strong commitment to their teaching profession and are constantly striving to improve their teaching skills and knowledge.

Abstract

Teaching English to first-grade elementary school children presents its own challenges for teachers. This is because children at this age have characteristics such as having a short attention span, enjoying playing, and learning more effectively when they are having fun. On the other hand, children in this group are still learning to read and write in the national language. The purpose of this research is to explore how English literacy learning is implemented, to find out the inhibiting and encouraging factors in implementing English literacy learning in first-grade elementary schools, and to find out strategies that can be used to overcome the factors that hinder the implementation of English literacy learning in the classroom. one elementary school. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this research are first-grade elementary school English teachers, school students, and learning documents. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. Some of the results of this research are that teachers apply various methods in teaching, such as songs, drills, lectures, reading aloud, memorizing, and games. Among these learning strategies, songs are the most effective strategy for introducing English to children. The challenges faced are that children are very active, get bored quickly, and a small number of children do not read fluently. Factors that can support English literacy learning are adequate learning aids such as the use of pictures and parental involvement at home to repeat English lessons and practice them at home

Abstract

Simbur Cahaya manuscript is a customary law originating from the government of Palembang Lamo, precisely in the 17th century, and was applied in the interior regions of Palembang. During the Dutch colonial period, the Dutch Assistant Resident Van den Bossche successfully completed the codification of the Simbur Cahaya law in 1854. This law was subsequently revised multiple times, including in the years 1862, 1873, 1875, 1876, 1890, 1894, 1897, 1913, 1922, 1927, and 1939. An analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) has revealed a unique feature of this manuscript: all legal violations in society were sanctioned with fines in the form of ringgit. This paper aims to explore how ringgit was used as a fine to punish members of society who violated the rules. The focus of this study is to trace how ringgit was applied as a sanction for legal offenders. The research employs historical research methods, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, with the primary source being the Simbur Cahaya manuscript codified by the Dutch in 1922 and 1927. The novelty of this study lies in the use of artificial intelligence to interpret the Simbur Cahaya manuscript as the primary source of research. Based on the analysis, it was found that all social punishments recorded in the Simbur Cahaya manuscript for individuals who violated the rules were always accompanied by fines in the form of ringgit, ranging from a minimum of half a ringgit to a maximum of six ringgit.

Abstract

International student faced unique challenges in adapting to a new language and linguistic environment. The language difficulties faced by students impact their ability to understand learning materials. This study aims to analyze the literacy practices of international students from Tajikistan studying in Indonesia that have developed over time and what role language proficiency and cultural context play in shaping literacy development during the academic journey. This type of research is qualitative, using a qualitative narrative approach. This study explores the lived experiences of Tajik students in the Indonesian academic environment. The subjects of this study were Tajik students. Data collection mainly consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted face-to-face. The data collection instrument was an interview sheet. The data analysis method applied was thematic analysis following Creswell's six steps of data analysis. The research findings revealed that language barriers initially hampered academic adaptation and social integration. However, peer support, informal learning strategies, and extracurricular participation emerged as necessary in overcoming this challenge. Students gradually developed language proficiency, shifting from relying on their mother tongue to engaging confidently in Bahasa Indonesia. This study highlights the importance of immersive learning experiences, including social interactions and institutional support, in fostering academic success and intercultural competence.
