Abstract

The coronavirus outbreak has impacted all aspects of human life, including the greatest impact is on education. Therefore, the education system that is being carried out conventionally must be converted into online learning to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This article aims to describe (1) the students'  opinions regarding English subjects in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) the students' difficulties during online learning in English subjects, (3) the students' opinions about understanding the material in English subjects during online learning. This research used a descriptive qualitative design, by using interviews to get the data. The subjects of this study were 2 female and 1 male high achiever students from the first language class in Senior High School 2 situated in the area of a small town Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. The research instruments used were mainly personal chats interviews with the subjects of the study. The data collection was conducted in December 2020. The results showed that (1) online learning is less effective, significant, and boring; (2) difficulties that they face are unstable network, difficulty in the delivery of material provided by the teacher, and teacher’s teaching methods; (3) most of them also had difficulty in understanding the materials provided by the teacher.

Abstract

Song is an interesting medium for teaching English in a foreign language context. Through songs, students can learn new vocabulary, the grammar, and the idiomatic expression in an authentic way. The purpose of this paper are 1) to investigate the implementation of songs for listening and speaking activity; 2) to identify the students’ and teacher's problems and solutions in using songs for listening and speaking activities, and 3) to investigate how the students’ listening and speaking activities are assessed through the use of songs. The design of the study is a mixed method explanatory sequential design. The data was firstly collected from the questionnaire and followed with an interview. The researchers used a convenient sampling method because of its accessibility and availability. The targeted population was the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Lawang. The sample was the 6th parallel class of science major, and the 3rd Social Science major. The total respondents were 34 students.  The result shows that the listening activities of song selection and its comprehension were done at home, while the speaking activity in song interpretation was done in the classroom. The finding also reveals that many students had no problem in the listening comprehension, especially in the accent and pronunciation (41.2%). Some students had grammar, pronunciation, self-confidence, and lack of vocabulary problems in interpreting songs orally even though half of the students were in a neutral position. The solutions for their listening problems, among others, are finding difficult words in the dictionary, memorizing the words and the songs, and listening to native speakers' speech and dialogs from movies and YouTube. While for the speaking problems, the solutions are to have a lot of practice with friends and native speakers, joining speech competitions, and singing English songs. The students' performance in listening and speaking skills were assessed by using scoring rubric prepared by the teachers.

Abstract

This study investigated ELT students in one of the universities in Indonesia’s perspective on their reading comprehension skills according to the aspects on Barrett’s Taxonomy. There are five aspects such as literal comprehension, reorganization, inferential comprehension, evaluation, and appreciation. This study also investigated what reading comprehension they need to study the most. The participant of this study is 36 students from ELE 2021 cohort. Their perception is based on their extensive reading activity using the stories in XReading website. The quantitative survey design is employed in this study and the researcher distributed a questionnaire as an instrument for this study. The researcher calculated the frequency of distributions and percentages, then described and summarized the result of the data analysis in the form of narratives. The study shows that the participants of this study had positive responses towards the use of the stories in XReading website for practicing their reading comprehension skills. Based on the responses given by the respondents, most of them agreed that XReading helps them to practice those five reading comprehension aspects based on Barrett’s Taxonomy. This study shows that XReading website is recommended for the educators who want their students to practice reading comprehension aspects and for the students who want to practice the reading comprehension aspects independently.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of inclusive education in English classrooms at a public senior high school in Malang, with a focus on the English teacher's instructional methods, teaching experiences, and SEN students challenges encountered in an inclusive setting. A case study design was employed, involving two SEN students and one English teacher. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings highlight several key points. First, the teacher taught English in three phases; pre, whilst, and post activity, occasionally provided additional support to an ADHD student when they faced difficulties. Second, no specific treatment was given for SEN students, as the teacher treated them similarly to their mainstream peers during instruction. Third, SEN students experienced various challenges, including difficulty following instructions, struggling with social interactions, issues in completing classroom assignments—either finishing too quickly but inaccurately, or having trouble in completing tasks—restlessness (such as fidgeting), and inconsistencies between oral and written performance. Overcoming these challenges require targeted interventions, including using simplified instructions, providing social skills training for SEN students, incorporating fidget tools, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and utilizing manageable oral and written assessments for SEN students.
