Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe the types of speech acts used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, to elaborate the realization of Jokowi used illocutionary act in campaign speeches, to know the reason of using illocutionary act. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative research. The data of the research are the utterances of Jokowi’s speeches. The source of the data was Jokowi’s campaign speeches. The technique for collecting data is documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by using Miles and Huberman. The findings show all types of speech acts were used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, namely:  locutionary act, illocutionary act can be classified into five parts; there were assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, declarative and the last types was perlocutionary act. The realization of illocutionary act used in Jokowi’s campaign speeches, the directive speech act was used in form of warning, commanding, promising, offering, questioning, requesting. The reasons of using illocutionary act in Jokowi’s campaign speeches are to point out or to identify what the speaker mean from his utterance, which influence of meaning and information of the speech and to get information clearly from Jokowi’s campaign speeches.   Keywords: speech acts, campaign, campaign speeches

Abstract

This study deals with the politeness strategies of directive utterance used by the host of Satu Jam Lebih Dekat Talk Show on TV One. This study employs qualitative design which aims at describing the politeness strategy of directive utterance used by the host. The strategy of politeness is related to those proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987); Bald on record strategy, Positive politeness, Negative politeness, and Off-record strategy. Directive utterance is related to those proposed by Vanderveken (1990); there are 56 types of directive utterances. The subject is the host as the interviewer in three episodes who participated in this research. The results show that the host expresses her directive utterances in request, questions, interrogates, urge, invite, and cautions. The host applied the four types of politeness strategies to relate directive utterances as politeness strategies stated by Brown and Levinson they are (1) bald on record, (2) positive politeness, (3) negative politeness, (4) off record. The most type is question (30%) as positive politeness. It is caused by the host wants to give questions respects the H’s negative face want and will not (or will only minimally) interfere with the H’s freedom of action. Abstract

The objectives of the research are to identify how Donald Trumps realized his political motivation on his speech. The research picked Donald Trumps last speech campaign 2017. Here, the researcher will focus on identifying the way of political motivations are realized in Donald Trumps speech. The data were taken from Donald Trumps speech  transcript that downloaded from internet and analyzed. Based on the result of data analysis, it is found that the motivation realized in Donald Trumps Speech are realized through 3 themes in his speech. Abstract

The reserach dealt with Acehnese proverbs with the aims of this study were to (1) toinvestigate kinds of translation strategies in translating the Acehnese proverbs into Bahasa Indonesia, (2) to investigate Acehnese proverbs realized in its translationinto Bahasa Indonesia, (3) to describe the translation strategies applied in the ways they are. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study were Acehnese proverbs and there were translated into Bahasa Indonesia by Hasjim M.K. at all (1977) taken from the book entitle “Peribahasa Aceh”. The results of this study showed that (1) There were three kinds of translation strategies in translating the Acehnese proverbs into Bahasa Indonesia namely exact equivalent, near equivalent, and literal meaning,  (2) In realization of Acehnese proverbs there were three ways in translating proverbs namely the words following the proverb could be introduced as the meaning of the proverb, it can be replaced with an equivalent local proverb, and its non-figurative meaning could be stated straight forwardly,  (3) In translating Acehnese proverbs, the translators need to know all aspects of cultural background of both languages.Key words: Translation, Strategies, Proverbs

Abstract

The research dealt with Metaphor Sentences. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the translation strategies of metaphors are used in The Magic of Thinking Big and (2) to describe the translation strategies maintain metaphors in The Magic of Thinking Big. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were sentences. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) The metaphor in The magic of Thinking Big were translated by applying six translation strategies, namely: word for word Translation (5.3%) lieral translation (4.3%), faithful translation (57.5%), Free translation (3.2%), communicative translation (30.5%) and discursive creation was found (2.2%). (2) The metaphors are maintained that found in the Magic of Thinking Big are original metaphors turned into another original metaphors, stock metaphors turned into another stock metaphors, adapted metaphors turned into adapted metaphors, dead metaphors turned into dead metaphors, original metaphor turned into stock metaphor, stock metaphor turned into original metaphor, meanwhile, 10 original metaphors and 1 dead metaphor are no longer classified as metaphors. Language has special characteristic that is metaphor sentences, therefore in the case of translating of metaphor sentences in which their concept in unknown for readers, the translator often faces the problems to find out the translation strategies to translate metaphor in a source language (SL) and how the metaphor sentences are maintained in the target language (TL).Keywords : Metaphor, Translation Strategies, Maintain Metaphor

Abstract

This study investigated ideational grammatical metphor in Senior High School English Textbook. The objectives of the study were to identify what ideational grammatical metaphors were used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data for this study were texts which were taken from Texts in Senior High School English Textbooks. The data were collected by selecting all the texts in the textbooks, then retyping the passage of the texts, editing the passage by breaking down the clauses into a data, and finally printing out the data. After the data had been collected, they were analyzed by some procedures; identifying the ideational grammatical metaphor in the data, rewording or unpacking the data into a congruent form, making comparisons between the two forms, classifying the classes of ideational grammatical metaphor and its function and analyzing the reason the ideational grammatical metaphor was used in Senior High School English Textbooks. The findings of the study showed that there were four ideational grammatical metaphor used in Senior High School English Textbook, namely the data of epithet = thing, event = thing, event = epithet and head = modifier.Keywords: Ideational Grammatical Metaphor, Senior High School English Textbooks,
