Abstract

Abstract This study aims to explore the impact of stress management strategies on students' coping intelligence at Muhammadiyah University Tasikmalaya. The background of this study is the phenomenon that a number of students feel academic pressure, especially when writing their final assignments, but not all of them are able to manage stress effectively. This study applies a quantitative approach using a correlational design. The sample consisted of 167 students selected through proportional stratified sampling. The measurement tools used were the Adversity Quotient (AQ) scale and Brief COPE, with data analysis through Pearson's correlation test and simple linear regression using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The findings of this study indicate a positive and significant relationship between stress management strategies and adversity quotient (r = 0.340; p = 0.000). Stress management strategies contributed 11.6% to adversity quotient, while 88.4% was influenced by other factors. These results emphasize the importance of implementing adaptive stress management strategies such as problem-focused coping, social support, and cognitive restructuring in developing students' psychological resilience. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for the development of guidance and counseling services in higher education, particularly in designing adaptive stress management training programs to increase student resilience and optimism. Abstract

This study addressed the need to promote students’ positive psychological well-being amid increasing academic, emotional, and social challenges during adolescence. The study examined the effectiveness of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based group counseling intervention in enhancing flourishing among senior high school students. ACT was selected because it aims to enhance psychological flexibility, a key mechanism that enables individuals to pursue meaningful and value-consistent lives despite experiencing psychological distress, thereby supporting the development of flourishing. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed. An initial screening was conducted with 149 students, from whom 16 students with low to moderate flourishing levels who met the inclusion criteria were purposively selected for the intervention. Flourishing was assessed using the Integrative Multidimensional Flourishing Scale (IMFS; Cronbach’s α = .93), alongside measures of psychological flexibility, depression, anxiety, and stress. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, paired-samples t-test, Cohen’s d effect size, and the Reliable Change Index (RCI). The findings demonstrated significant improvements in students’ flourishing and psychological flexibility, accompanied by reductions in psychological distress. The intervention produced a very large effect on flourishing (Cohen’s d = 2.68), with reliable positive changes observed across participants. These findings support ACT-based group counseling as an effective school-based promotive intervention for strengthening students’ psychological well-being and adaptive functioning.

Abstract

Academic flow and student engagement are essential components of the learning process that influence students’ focus, intrinsic motivation, and academic success. According to Csikszentmihalyi’s (1990) flow theory, experiencing deep involvement in learning activities that are both challenging and aligned with one’s abilities can enhance concentration and persistence. Similarly, the engagement framework by Fredricks et al. (2004) emphasizes that behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement is shaped by positive and meaningful learning experiences. This study aims to describe the levels of academic flow and student engagement among 11th-grade students at SMK Negeri Manonjaya and to analyze the relationship between the two variables. Using a quantitative correlational approach with standardized measurement scales, the findings show that academic flow falls within the moderate category (78.48%), and student engagement is also in the moderate category (66.82%). Pearson correlation analysis reveals a strong and significant positive relationship between academic flow and student engagement (r = 0.684, p < 0.001), while regression analysis indicates that academic flow contributes 46.7% to student engagement. These results suggest that higher levels of flow—reflected in students’ focus, enjoyment, and interest in learning—are associated with higher academic engagement. A limitation of this study is that it did not incorporate any intervention; thus, it provides only a descriptive overview of students’ conditions without examining the effectiveness of specific actions to improve flow or engagement. Practical implications emphasize the role of classical guidance services, with materials such as enjoyable study strategies, learning responsibility, social ethics, coping with challenges, improving concentration, creativity development, wise decision-making, and learning motivation. These materials can strengthen students’ self-regulation, focus, resilience, positive interactions, and intrinsic motivation, thereby supporting the development of optimal flow conditions and academic engagement.
