Abstract

The conjunction is known as one of the most challenging topics to acquire by EFL learners. Its close correlation with the ability of writing makes this topic imperative to master by English learners. The study intends to identify (1) the types of conjunction used by EFL learners in writing English texts, and (2) the combinations formed by using conjunction in writing English texts. Data was collected from the background part of final project reports of English Diploma-III students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung, Indonesia. It resulted in 213 uses of conjunctions to be further analyzed. This study employed the qualitative descriptive method to identify the type of conjunction used and the model of combinations formed. The results show that EFL learners have been able to use coordinate conjunction, subordinate conjunction, and correlative conjunction in writing English texts. The most conjunction used is the coordinate conjunction. Also, they have been able to form combinations of word-word, word-phrase, phrase-phrase, and clause-clause by using conjunctions in their English writings. These results may bring both theoretical and practical implications. First, theoretically, the findings can enrich the knowledge of English Grammar and Writing in general. Second, practically, the results may be beneficial for curriculum designers and lecturers as one of the evaluation resources to arrange more suitable materials for EFL learners, especially at the level of Diploma-III.      Keywords:  Conjunction; Final Project; Background; EFL Learners

Abstract

The urban forest can provide social benefits as a public recreation area. Efforts to utilize the urban forest as a recreational area need to be carefully planned, so it is necessary to assess the recreational potential of the urban forest to produce effective planning. This study aims to reveal in depth the potential utilization of urban forest assets as a public recreation area based on the determination of outdoor recreation potential. The study method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative with data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, and documentation studies. Based on the results of the assessment, it is revealed that the recreational potential of the Kibitay Urban Forest assets is included in the high recreational potential category by 64% because it has sufficient landscape feature value and high climate value and accessibility. This shows that the Kibitay Urban Forest has the potential to be used as a public recreation area, although recreational facilities are not fully adequate. Future research can consider conducting asset planning for Kibitay Urban Forest facilities in Sukabumi City as a public recreation area.

Abstract

This study examines the application of foreignization and domestication strategies in translating the bilingual profile book of POKDARWIS ‘Big Farmer,’ a community-based tourism organization of Desa Kertawangi, West Bandung, Indonesia. Utilizing Venuti’s translation framework (1995), this research identifies how the two strategies are employed to present Culture-Specific Items (CSI) as categorized by Espindola (2005) to both Indonesian and English-speaking audiences, enhancing cross-cultural understanding and promoting tourism. Through qualitative analysis, the findings reveal a tendency of foreignization strategy to preserve cultural uniqueness and a minor amount of domestication to ensure clarity and readability for international readers. The study highlights the importance of adapting cultural terms and region-specific references to maintain both authenticity and accessibility in translation. This research contributes to the broader discussion on translation practices in tourism and cross-cultural communication, suggesting that a mixed approach allows for effective cultural representation while accommodating the target audience’s familiarity. The results have implications for translation studies, especially in bilingual materials for community-based tourism.

Abstract

Kertawangi Village, located in Cisarua District, West Bandung Regency, has great potential as a tourist destination due to its mountainous topography and cool climate. The majority of the village's population relies on agriculture and livestock. The local government has strived to develop the village into an international tourist destination by forming a tourism awareness group (POKDARWIS) and initiated the 'Big Farmer' program in 2020. However, the lack of promotional media in both Indonesian and English hinders the progress of promoting this program as well as the village. This community service program aims to provide bilingual promotional media for Kertawangi Village by creating and translating a program profile and brochure that can be used by POKDARWIS and the local community. The method involved three main stages: planning, implementation, and evaluation. The data was primarily obtained from interviews with POKDARWIS members as well as local residents. The result consists of a bilingual program profile and brochure containing information about the history, vision and mission, core values, activities, products and services, partnerships, markets and customers, as well as the team behind the ‘Big Farmer’ program. The development of these promotional materials may enhance the visibility of Kertawangi Village as a tourist destination, support the local economy's sustainability, and advance community-based tourism.

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, particularly in machine translation systems such as ChatGPT, has prompted extensive discourse regarding its efficacy compared to manual translation. This study aims to compare the quality of manual and ChatGPT-generated translations within the context of a tourism-focused bilingual profile book of ‘Big Farmer’, focusing on three analytical levels: lexical, syntactic, and textual. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research examines the differences in word choice, sentence structure, and semantic accuracy between human and machine translations. The findings reveal that although ChatGPT excels in terms of speed and consistency, manual translation remains superior in preserving cultural nuances and linguistic subtlety, especially at the syntactic and textual levels. Distinct from previous studies that predominantly explored scientific, legal, or medical texts, this research highlights the unique challenges of translating a bilingual profile book in the context of tourism, where maintaining tone and brand identity is paramount. This study contributes to translation studies both theoretically, by expanding the knowledge base in English-Indonesian translation, and practically, by providing insights for translators on the prudent application of AI technologies in translation practices.

Abstract

Abstract

Captions are one of the most important elements in social media because they can provide context, add narrative, or engage the audience with the posted content. However, captions that are written sometimes do not comply with the language rules used. This study aims to identify the kinds of grammatical and mechanical errors found in the captions of LIUNIC ON THINGS. The study applied theories from Dulay, Burt, and Krashen's Surface Strategy Taxonomy (1982), Warriner and Griffith (1973), and Mitchell (2008). This study applied a document analysis method; the process of reviewing and evaluating documents both printed and electronic in a methodical manner. This method is useful for identifying, categorizing, analyzing, and interpreting physical data to gain understanding and come to a conclusion. From the data collection, it was found that there were 66 grammatical errors and 61 mechanical errors in 50 captions released in 2022. The results revealed that the grammatical errors found in its Instagram caption are 63.6% of misformation, 25.8% of omission, 6.1% of misordering, and 4.5% of addition. The mechanical errors, on the other hand, are 50.8% of punctuation errors, 44.3% of capitalization errors, and 4.9% of spelling errors. It can be seen that misformation is the most common grammatical error, and punctuation is the most common mechanical error. The result of this study is expected to be used as one of the evaluation resources for social media caption makers to prevent the occurrence of grammatical and mechanical errors.

Abstract

The quality of the research background provides readers with the essential context needed to understand the research problem. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the quality of this section. This study investigates the comparison of the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering students’ final project report background using Swales’ (2012) Create a Research Space (CARS) Move/Step analysis model. Data were collected from 71 students’ final project reports at a polytechnic in Bandung, comprising 35 from engineering fields and 36 from non-engineering fields. The results indicate that both fields incorporate Move 1, Move 2, and Move 3. In Move 1, both fields use Step 2 (Making topic Generalization) to establish a research area. Meanwhile, in Move 2, step 2 (Indicating a Gap) and step 4 (Continuing a Tradition) are frequently applied in non-engineering fields to establish a research niche. In Move 3, both fields use step 1A (Outlining Purposes) to describe their studies. The findings suggest no significant difference in the Move and Step structures between engineering and non-engineering fields. These insights may contribute to improving the quality of students’ final project reports.
