Abstract

This research aims to classify the type of politeness maxims and the contextual meaning of the speakers’ utterances in using politeness maxims found in Kick Andy Talkshow. The data source of this research was YouTube “Kick Andy Talkshow” which was aired on 5th November 2019. The theory of politeness maxims by Grice and the theory of contextual meaning by Windi. The research method was descriptive qualitative research with content analysis. The result showed that there were 39 politeness strategies found in Kick Andy Talk Show, they were: 6 types of politeness maxims. There are 5 data of tact maxims, 5 data of genorsity maxims, 6 data of approbation maxims, 10 data of modesty maxims, 11 data of agreement maxims, and 2 data of sympathy maxims. And there were 36 contextual meaning found in Kick Andy Talk Show, they were contex of situation 7 data, contex of purpose 8 data, contex of place 6 data, contex of time 6 data, and contex of ocject 9 data. It can be concluded that there are many types of politeness maxims and contextual meanings found in the Kick Andy Talkshow.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat Pengaruh Keterampilan Berpikir Tingkat Tinggi Dan Kemampuan Menulis Dalam Teks Deskriptif Pada Kelas X Sma Negeri 3 Pematang Siantar Tahun 2023. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan desain penelitian kuantitatif kuasi eksperimen. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMA N 3 Pematang Siantar Tahun Pelajaran 2023/2024. Sekolah ini terletak di Jl. Pane, Kota Pematang Siantar, Sumatera Utara. Populasi sekolah dapat dianggap sebagai kumpulan ruang kelas. Penulis menarik kesimpulan dari populasi tersebut di atas sebagai hasil dari desain penelitian ini. Murid-murid ini dipilih melalui cluster random sampling dan pelemparan kubus. Kemudian penulis langsung memberikan kedua instruksi tersebut, dengan menetapkan kelas pertama sebagai kelas eksperimen (X 1) dan kelas kedua sebagai kelas kontrol (X 2). Berikut ini penjelasan mengenai pola tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan soal keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi berhasil meningkatkan kapasitas siswa dalam memproduksi konten tekstual deskriptif. Hal ini didukung dengan hasil tes Mann Whitney atau Assymp yang menunjukkan bahwa siswa kelas eksperimen mendapat nilai lebih tinggi dibandingkan siswa kelas kontrol. Ha diterima dan H0 ditolak bila nilai Sig (2-tailed) 0,003 < 0,05. Dapat disimpulkan, berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan didukung oleh beberapa penelitian sebelumnya, bahwa penggunaan soal keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif pada kelas Sepuluh di SMA Negeri 3 Pematang Siantar.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of using English Stories With Level application on students' vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar in 2024/2025 academic year. The research aimed to determine the effect of using the English Stories With Level Application as a media for learning vocabulary at seventh grade of SMP Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar. The objective of the study was to find out whether this application could significantly improve students' vocabulary mastery. The research utilized a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, which included both a pre-test and post-test. The population consisted of 300 students, from which two classes were selected via cluster random sampling. The experimental group received instruction using English Stories with Level Application, while the control group used conventional media (handbook). Data collection involved administering pre-tests and post-tests to both the experimental and control groups. The descriptive analysis revealed that the mean post-test score for the experimental group was 73.00, while the control group scored 66.50. A paired-sample t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). This suggested that the use of this application as a media for vocabulary learning was more effective than traditional methods. In conclusion, the research demonstrated that English Stories with Level Application significantly enhanced vocabulary acquisition among seventh grade students.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) To find out the types of figurative language used in Bruno Mars’ song album. (2) To find out the most dominant type of figurative language used in Bruno Mars’ song album. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The type of data for this research is Bruno Mars' songs from the album 24K Magic, namely 24K Magic, That's What I Like, Calling All My Lovelies, Chunky, Versace on the Floor, Finesse, Perm, Straight Up & Down, Too Good to Say Goodbye. In this research, the researchers used Keraf's theory. From the analysis, the results of this research show that the total data of types of figurative language used in the album 24K Magic by Bruno Mars is 32 (100%). The most dominant figurative language style is Eponym. There are 11 (34%) Eponym in the song lyrics, 6 (19%) total personification data, 10 (31%) total metaphor data, and 5 (16%) similes in the song lyrics. The presence of figurative language in songs makes the conveyed message more interesting for the listeners. The author suggests that other researchers continue to analyze figurative language as it can help readers understand the meaning contained in the song lyrics. Another suggestion is for researchers who want to analyze figurative language in song lyrics to use other objects such as novels, films, poetry, etc.

Abstract

AbstractThis study used qualitative research. The data were analyzed by classifying the types of errors made by the students from students’ paper. The objective of this research were to found out thethe types of error of subject- verb agreement in narrative writing made by students in the eleventh grade and the most dominant error of subject-verb agreement made by students in the eleventh grade of SMA Singosari Delitua. The result showed that are 174 errors made by the XI IPA 1 students in writing narrative text. Misformation error is type of errors which indicate the common error made by students. The number of misformation error are 65 and percentage is 37,3%, followed by omission errors has 55 with percentage is 31,7%, and the third is addition errors has 36 with percentage is 20,7%, the fourth misordering error has 18 with percentage 10,3%. From the explanation above, it shows that the errors of misformation reached the highest frequency, followed by errors of omission, errors of addition and the last misordering in this study. Here are some reasons why the most dominant error of misformation: errors in the use of the wrong form of morpheme or structure. In misformation, students provide and give something, even though it is not true at all. Wrong in forming the construction of a word, phrase, or sentence.Keywords: Error, Narrative, Subject-Verb Agreement, Writing

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of visual media, specifically images, on Grade X students’ ability to write spoof texts at SMA Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. Using a quasiexperimental design with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent group format, 62 students were divided into an experimental group receiving image-based instruction and a control group taught without visual aids. The experimental group demonstrated significant improvement, with mean scores increasing from 51.26 in the pretest to 84.74 in the posttest, compared to the control group’s modest increase from 50.39 to 66.65. The t-test analysis confirmed the results were statistically significant (t-value = 6.06, p < 0.05). Visual media enhanced students’ understanding of spoof text structures, including orientation, events, and twists. It also fostered creativity and narrative cohesion, enabling students to construct engaging and coherent stories. In contrast, traditional instruction showed limited effectiveness in improving these skills. The findings highlight the benefits of integrating visual aids into English instruction, particularly for creative writing tasks. Images serve as effective scaffolding tools, helping students organize ideas and improve writing quality. This study underscores the potential of visual media to enhance students’ creative abilities in narrative genres, emphasizing its importance in educational practices.

Abstract

This research was carried out to find out the Effect of Picture and Picture Media on Understanding Writing Procedure Text at Grade Eight students of SMP HKBP Batu 4. The research methodology used in this research was a quantitative method. The population of this research was at grade VIII of SMP HKBP Batu 4 in the academic year 2024/2025. The researcher took two classes as the sample. The samples were VIII-A as experimental group consisted of 25 students and VIII-B as control group consisted of 25 students. Data collection was carried out using essay tests. The data were obtained by using pre-test and post-test given to both groups, score were calculated and analyzed using excel and manual method. The research results showed that the average score of the experimental class was a pre- test score of 63 and post-test score of 82.68. Meanwhile, the average score for the control class was a pre-test score of 57.56 and post-test 74.12. The t-test calculation shows that (8.8>2.068) at a significance level of 2.5%, a two-sided test means the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. This means that the effect of Picture and Picture on Understanding Writing Procedure Text at Grade Eight Students of SMP HKBP Batu 4.

Abstract

This community service aims to strengthen the role of teachers in educating students who come from broken home families in SMP Negeri 2 Siantar.This activity is beneficial for minimizing the negative activities of  broken home students at school due to attracting teachers’ and other students’ attention. In this context, the teacher’s role is very important in providing a comprehensive education to students and helping them overcome challenges related to their family conditions. This article highlights some of the major roles that teachers can play in educating broken home students, including creating a safe learning environment, providing emotional support, developing social and emotional skills, and collaborating with parents and other professionals to provide the right kind of attention to these students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan Strategi Reciprocal Teaching dapat secara signifikan meningkatkan pemahaman membaca teks narasi siswa di SMP Negeri 2 Siantar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain penelitian quasi eksperimen. Populasinya adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 2 Siantar yang berjumlah 263 siswa. Dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, dipilih dua kelas sebagai sampel penelitian, yaitu kelas eksperimen (VIII-1) dan kelas kontrol (VIII-3), masing-masing kelas terdiri dari 30 siswa. Instrumen pengumpulan data menggunakan pilihan ganda untuk pre-test dan post-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata post-test di kelas eksperimen adalah 73,1 dan rata-rata post-test di kelas kontrol adalah 65. Setelah peneliti menemukan bahwa Thitung lebih tinggi dari Ttabel (2,066 > 1,672) pada taraf signifikansi 5%. . Berdasarkan hasil temuan Ha diterima dan Ho ditolak. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Reciprocal Teaching Strategy (RTS) secara signifikan meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa di SMP Negeri 2 Siantar dalam pemahaman membaca teks naratif.
