Abstract

Character building should be a priority in education, and this present study argues that literature can be a medium for developing students’ characters. This study employs George’s model of library research to synthesize arguments and results of previous studies on genres used in character education, the method used, the values identified in the literary texts used, and the challenges faced during the implementation of literature for building students' characters. The data sources are chosen from reputable international and accredited national journals, closely read, and synthesized to answer the research questions. It is revealed that the genres used by the previous studies for building character values are novels, short stories, children’s stories, films, poetry, folklores, and textbooks. The methods used are story-mediated storytelling, puppet-mediated storytelling, reading comprehension, literature-based instruction, and group discussion. The values identified as teachable through literature are religious, honest, tolerant, disciplined, hardworking, creative, autonomous, democratic, nationalism, patriotism, curious, appreciative, communicative, peace-loving, bibliophilic, environmental awareness, social awareness, and responsible. The challenges faced in using literature for character building are authentic material, time constraints, students' and teachers’ attitudes, proficiency, and critical thinking ability. Thus, the present study recommends using literature for building characters while urging teachers and researchers to find alternatives to cope with the challenges through continuous innovations and research.

Abstract

YouTube has become one of the most visited social media globally. Its saturation in students' lives has triggered experiments and observations on the use of YouTube as learning media. This article discusses the use of YouTube videos to teach English language skills using George's literature review model. The databases for selecting the articles used as the data source in this study were Google scholar and ERIC. The relevant articles were published in reputable international journals and nationally accredited journals in the past ten years. Studies on the use of YouTube videos as a teaching medium indicate that using YouTube videos can improve students' listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills and solve their problems in mastering the skills. Furthermore, YouTube videos have been proven to help students solve their grammar difficulties and increase their vocabulary. YouTube videos are also agreed to have kept the students more interested, motivated, and enthusiastic towards English language learning. These results imply that relevant YouTube videos can provide good learning media for supporting students' learning of English as a Foreign Language.

Abstract

This article is focused on how to analyse any moral values portrayed in the memoir "Educated," with particular emphasis on the protagonist, Tara Westover. The study intends to identify conflicts encountered by the main character through narration or dialogues with other characters, and to reveal moral values that emerge as she overcomes these conflicts. The research utilized a qualitative descriptive method and drew on the conflict theory proposed by Stanton (1965) and the theory of moral values put forth by Linda and Eyre (1993) to analyse data from the memoir. Two of the conflicts found in this study were both internal struggles by the main character involving her thoughts and feelings and external struggles with her father, abusive older brother, and family members who labelled her as a dangerous girl influenced by Satan. Through her resolution on these conflicts, the main character demonstrated various moral values, including self-reliance, self-discipline, courage, and respect. The study's findings emphasize the significance of spiritual metamorphosis in memoirs and literature, as well as how conflicts can facilitate such transformation.
