Abstract

This study aims to identify diction which is related to message logic in communicating on social media. The identification is carried out based on Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast that is aired on YouTube. The analysis of diction is an interesting study when, as one of the reasons, it is related to the efforts to effectively convey messages that are beneficial to a society. This study combines the concept of diction and Message Logic Theory, particularly "message design logic." The method applied is observation on the data source in the form of a video recording with note-taking techniques by which identification, classification and data reduction could be carried out. There are two main results in this study. First, the diction includes general words consisting of graded words and abstract words, and particular words consisting of proper names and the words that have suggestive power. Second, the dominant message logic that appears in Deddy Corbuzier's podcast episode "Malih, Pesan Pedas Tuk Ade Londok” (Malih, Sharp Message for Ade Londok) is expressive logic and rhetorical logic. The implication of this research on diction and communication logic is a description of the importance of choosing the right words in public spaces. This study also recommends other researchers to do further researches by using more speech data so that public communication patterns can be mapped better.

Abstract

This study concerns with code-switching in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. This study aims to answer the research problems, which are: (1) to classify the types of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance and (2) and to analyze the function of code switching. Descriptive qualitative method was applied to identify the data. Code-switching was described according to a theory proposed by Poplack (1980) to classify the types of code-switching and the theory by Apple& Muysken (1987) to describe the function of code switching found in Daniel Mananta’s utterance. The result of this study shows that all types of code switching and six function of code-switching were found. First, the three types of code-switching were found, namely tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching, in which the most dominant switching is intra-sentential switching. It occurs because Daniel Mananta looks more comfortable when using words, clauses, and phrases in one sentence to convey motivational messages. Second, six functions of code-switching were found, namely referential function, directive function, expressive function, phatic function, metalinguistic function, poetic function. The most dominant function is phatic function because Daniel Mananta’s feels free and more comfortable expressing his emotional feelings in a language that is used in his daily language.

Abstract

The field of Translation and Interpreting (T&I) encompasses bilingual activities in transferring messages from a source language to a target language with an assertive cognitive capacity to produce natural and equivalent meaning. This study serves as a preliminary experiment to explore the cognitive capacity development of ESL students in rendering messages within T&I. Mix-method is applied by involving 28 students taking the test of rendering the messages orally and in written. The experiment consists of three stages: a CEFR test, which reveals that the students' highest level is B1 Intermediate; a 12-session T&I course covering theory, strategies, and practice; and an evaluation phase including feedback collected through questionnaires. In general, the T&I process of rendering messages from English (EN) to Indonesian (ID) is deemed naturally acceptable, and the students are able to accomplish the task. However, there are challenges related to working memory, which result in students not achieving excellent test scores. The EN-ID group shows better performance in translating and interpreting, particularly in the higher score ranges, whereas the ID-EN group has a larger number of participants with lower scores. Additionally, delivering messages from Indonesian to English poses challenges, especially in the context of noun phrases. These challenges are primarily attributed to differences in word order, determiners and articles, prepositions, idiomatic expressions, vocabulary, as well as the participants' proficiency level and exposure to both languages.

Abstract

Research on translation, especially related to loss and gain of information in translation, in recent years has been carried out quite often. However, these studies are still focused on studying the structure (grammatical error). In this regard, this study aims to examine the loss and gain of information in translation which not only focuses on grammatical errors, but also discusses the loss and gain of information that occurs in the translation process in the source book entitled "Mandi Api" and its translation "Ordeal by Fire". The selected books were written by Balinese writers and translated into English by an American translator. In this regard, this study examines the phenomenon of gain of information and loss of information in translating text from SL to SL. This study analyzes the meaning of translation from SL into TL, thus, the results of this study are very useful for developing scientific knowledge in the field of linguistics, especially for building a framework of thought about phenomena that appear in translation. Furthermore, through this research, it is hoped that there will be an inventory of the phenomenon of loss and gain of information in translation. The data is in the form of written data. In order to ensure the success of this research, data collection methods in the form of observation and note taking methods were applied in this study. The data were analyzed referring to the views of Nida (1975) on the Principles of Translation.
