Abstract

Reading motivation is an important predictor of reading achievement in elementary school. Electronic book or digital book is one of the media that students can always access by technological assistance. This study aims to determine the urgency and potential of developing a teaching material product in the form of E-Book based multimodal approach on reading motivation for elementary school students. This research is included in the mixed method approach using explanatory sequential design. The research subjects consisted of teachers and 79 students in fifth grade. The data collected in this study are qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected using observation techniques, and interviews whose instruments were observation sheets and interview guidelines. Quantitative data was collected using non-test techniques, namely questionnaires and followed by questionnaires as instruments. Furthermore, the research data will be analyzed descriptively with interactive analysis through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that during the implementation of learning, teachers only used teaching materials in the form of printed books that causes students to be lazy to read and student responses stated that they needed interesting ICT-based teaching materials to increase engagement, reading habit and motivation to read which in this case as many as 94% of students agreed if there was development in interactive teaching materials in e-book format for language learning. Therefore, this study concluded that to encourage good reading habits among students, schools especially teachers should provide access to learning using ebooks and sufficient facilities to accommodate all students. Implication of this study can be a reference for teachers to develop similar electronic media. Librarians should intensify their efforts to create more reading awareness among students.

Abstract

Technology's darting advancement made digital literacy a key component in pre-service teacher professional development. Their digital literacy ability is reflected in their teaching, including designing learning media such as digital story-telling. Hence, this study is designed to understand how EFL pre-service teachers access information as a part of digital literacy to create digital storytelling learning media. The data were gathered from 28 students of the English Education Department in the Cross-Cultural Understanding course by having them write diaries to reflect on their experiences in designing digital storytelling learning media. Using a narrative inquiry method, the data were analyzed through three steps: repeatedly reading, coding, and categorizing it into thematic headings. The findings from data analysis indicate the mastery of various dimensions of digital literacy, namely photo-visual, reproductive, branching, informational, and social-emotional literacy, by EFL pre-service teachers, substantially contributed to the quality of teaching and student engagement in digital-based learning. This research underscores the need to integrate digital literacy training into teacher education programs to better prepare future educators for the demands of modern, technology-driven classrooms.

Abstract

The necessary standards for conducting and disseminating research rely on research ethics. Research ethics determine whether research is integrity-based and adequately completed. Given the significant role of ethics in research, much of the research in Indonesia does not fall under the remit of research ethics committees (REC), especially research in studies, such as in education. This condition might happen because of the lack of knowledge about ethics in research and their significance. Thus, this case study aims to observe whether or not Indonesian researchers have enough knowledge about research ethics and their perception of the essential roles of ethics in research. We collected the data through a written interview with 20 participants selected purposely. The results of this study provided an extended discussion of knowledge and understanding of research ethics among Indonesian researchers in the educational field. We concluded that social researchers’ knowledge, support, and access to gain ethical clearance for the research should receive particular attention so that research in social studies could be ethically conducted and presented with qualified and validated results.

Abstract

Abstract: In the last ten years, studies of the representation of moral values in English textbooks have been growing. However, little empirical evidence reveals the use of speech acts to represent moral values through utterances. This study aims to investigate the representation of moral values depicted through utterances in English textbooks for elementary school grades 2 and 5 in Indonesia. By adopting a socio-cognitive critical discourse analysis (Van Dijk, 2015) framework integrated with Searle’s (1969) speech acts, this qualitative study elucidates the representation of moral values only in the verbal text. The data were analyzed by applying several steps, including unitizing, sampling, recording/coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The findings of this study showed that curiosity, honesty, and friendliness are the most dominant moral values depicted in two English textbooks for elementary schools in Indonesia.  Dialogue/conversation, chapter cover, and instruction for students’ activity are the strategies to promote moral values in the textbooks. This study implies that teachers and textbook writers should provide students with more examples of moral values, particularly those related to daily life communication.

Abstract

This case study explores the perceptions of translanguaging in the academic writing process of pre-service teachers. Drawing upon the theories of forms translanguaging (Baynham & Lee, 2019; Garcia & Lin, 2016; Hua & Wei, 2022) and the stages of writing proposed by Hyland (2003), this research delves into how pre-service teachers perceive and utilize translanguaging in their writing. The study integrates observations, interviews, and artifact analysis involving pre-service teachers to understand their engagement with translanguaging as both a communicative and pedagogical strategy. The findings show that pre-service teachers not only view translanguaging as a method for effective communication but also as a crucial tool for enhancing their engagement with academic content, particularly in the stages of topic selection, pre-writing, writing, and feedback. In addition, the significant use of translation, code-mixing, and code-switching underscores their linguistic adaptability in a multilingual academic context. This research contributes to the academic discourse by providing insights into the role of translanguaging in the academic writing process and its implications for future teaching practices.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for educational purposes has recently been a research interest. Specifically for academic writing, AI-based feedback, often called automated writing evaluation (AWE), is an essential aspect to support students"™ writing. However, despite its popularity, the trust in AWE, which potentially contributes to the students"™ writing improvement, has been explored on a limited basis. Hence, this multiple case study attempts to examine the trust in AWE and how this trust influences feedback engagement and literacy. Of 42 students joining a writing class, a total of 4 undergraduate students were involved to explore this issue. Considering the Indonesian government's policy to conduct online learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic era, classroom observation, stimulated recalls, and semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually via Zoom meetings to gather the data. Results show that the students' trust in AWE varied, indicated by their varied responses to AWE. Furthermore, their trust in AWE only affects the behavioral aspect, excluding the cognitive and affective aspects. Meanwhile, in feedback literacy, their trust only affected the aspect of appreciating the feedback. These findings imply that educators should pay interest to students' trust in AWE since it, in some ways, influences improvement of their feedback engagement and literacy.

Abstract

In recent years, the recognition of teachers’ well-being has gained worldwide attention. Language teacher well-being has a significant contribution to classroom activity. This study explores a pre-service English teacher’s positive emotions of well-being based on PERMA and its impact on future careers. Positive emotions are the presence of positive emotions, lack of negative emotions, and life satisfaction. Telecollaboration provides a beneficial space to get the chance to expand content knowledge, increase techno-pedagogical abilities, improve the methodology of teaching, and achieve a sense of well-being. This study used autobiographical narratives to capture the researcher’s positive well-being experiences. Data were gathered through diaries and artifacts in the form of photos and screenshots during telecollaboration. The researcher used a thematic analysis technique to analyze the data. The findings underscore the presence of positive emotions that influence the outcomes of pre-service teachers, while negative emotions shift into positive feelings, thus contributing to personal development. These experiences lead the pre-service English teacher into an effective prospective educator for the future.

Abstract

Student-student interaction is often overlooked, yet it plays a crucial role in the learning process. Teachers’ guidance in facilitating these interactions can significantly influence students' attitudes toward the subject and their perceptions. This study investigates pre-service teachers’ perceptions of student interactions within a creative problem-solving (CPS) framework using the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) model. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews, artifacts, and voice recordngs, The study involved 46 pre-service teachers, 6 males and 40 females, they are undergraduate students enrolled in the Curriculum and Material Development course. The results indicate that the CPS and IRF models effectively enhanced interaction, collaboration, and critical thinking among pre-service teachers. The dynamic classroom environment fostered by these models encouraged students to engage actively with their peers, respond positively to challenges, and generate innovative ideas. Peer feedback was particularly valuable, allowing for the maturation of concepts and deeper exploration of project content and learning media. Overall, the integration of the IRF model with CPS not only improved student interaction but also facilitated a collaborative atmosphere conducive to intellectual growth in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. This study highlights the importance of structured student interactions and provides insights into effective teaching strategies that can enrich the learning experience.
