Abstract

In general, the hydrocarbon molecules in the fuel perform vibrational activity towards the core and attract each other, forming clustering molecules. Induction of a magnetic field in the fuel flow can change the hydrocarbon molecules so that their arrangement becomes more regular (de-clustering). The induction of the magnetic field in this research utilized a coil that was fed by an output current from the SINJAI-150 engine alternator. Magnetic field placement was placed before Bioethanol E100 fuel entered the injector. Observation of the magnetization of the fuel was carried out molecularly with the FTIR (Fourier Transform-Infra Red Spectroscopy) test and observing the characteristics of the fuel spray at the injector output. The results obtained were an increase in the fuel transmittance of Bioethanol E100 up to 41.31% for C-H compounds, 48.8% for C-O compounds, and 114% for O-H compounds compared to standard conditions. In the spray characteristics, there was an increase in the spray angle up to 2 and a decrease in the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) to 1.312 mm, due to a decrease in the value of the fuel properties in the form of surface tension, viscosity, and density up to 2.6%, 10.28% and 10.15% from the standard state without magnetization. As a result of decreasing the density value, the mass flow rate of the fuel decreases to 10.28% from the standard conditions at 2,000 rpm.

Abstract

Biodiesel as an alternative fuel can replace fossil fuels. However, biodiesel has a higher value of viscosity, density and surface tension to fossil fuels. Increasing the injection pressure on the injector is one solution to overcome the problem of high viscosity, density, and surface tension in biodiesel. This study aims to determine the effect of increasing injection pressure and injection timing variations on spray characteristics, performance and exhaust emissions diesel engine. Injection pressure namely 200, 210, 220, 230 kg/cm$^2$ by setting the rotation of adjusting screw the injector. The results of this study were obtained by increasing the pressure injection of biodiesel fuel by 230 kg/cm$^2$ resulting in fuel spray characteristics better than the standard 200 kg/cm$^2$ and resulting improvements in the penetration length, spray angle, the average diameter size of each 30$\%$, 28$\%$, and 9.78$\%$. And performance improvements and exhaust emissions also occur, namely Thermal Efficiency, Specific Fuel Consumption, and Smoke Opacity with values of 16.99$\%$, 14.15$\%$, and 46.39$\%$ improved respectively.

Abstract

The production process of sulfuric acid is carried out in stages from combustion of liquid sulfur to SO$_2$, then to SO$_3$ and dissolving SO$_3$ in aqueous sulfuric acid solution to concentrated sulfuric acid (high concentration). The success of the production process is very dependent on the initial combustion process into SO$_2$, physical parameters on the liquid sulfur characteristics and the nozzle geometry. The process of burning liquid sulfur depends on the pattern of atomization in the geometry of the nozzle and its fluid characteristics. Liquid sulfur is included in non-newtonian fluids, so the atomization process requires an understanding of its characteristics. The atomization mechanism at the nozzle depends on 3 parameters including viscosity, surface tension and density. In non- Newtonian fluid 3 parameters are sensitive to changes in pressure and temperature. In terms of the geometry of the tip nozzle diameter, smaller diameter, the atomization process is better, but a decrease in temperature will cause clogging. Individual installation of temperature and pressure sensors for each nozzle is chosen so that the atomization of each nozzle can be controlled.

Abstract

In the present work, the effect of variation of air-fuel ratio on performances and emissions SINJAI-150 engine with bioethanol was conducted. Variation of the air-fuel ratio is done by setting the mass flow rate of combustion air using a supercharger. Engine performance was measured using a water brake dynamometer with a variable speed standard from 2000 to 8000 rpm at a fully open throttle condition. The results indicate that the natural intake system produces a relatively rich air-fuel ratio, with an average lambda of 0.68, so that the resulting performance is not maximum. The addition of aspirated 1 and 2 combustion air with the results in the form of average lambda at intervals of 0.8 - 1.1. On the aspirated 2, thermal efficiency increase averaged 50.32%, specific fuel consumption decrease averaged 32.74% and CO and HC emissions reduction average of 7.43 % and 25.77%.

Abstract

Bed material particles in a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler which entrained in the flue gas may cause material degradation due to abrrasive and high velocity impact of particles to wall surface. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) commercial software with Eulerian multiphase is used to study the erosion pattern in several different fluidizing air velocity. The result obtained from simulation in terms of particles volume fraction and particles velocity in selected area was utilised to predict the erosion rate in several different fluidizing air velocity to achieve the optimal value of fluidizing air velocity. The results obtained in this study are helpful to understand how erosion pattern in CFB boiler, how effect fluidizing air velocity to erosion rate, and also helped to know the potential areas occur erosion so helped to choose suitable material in different region.

Abstract

The combustion process in dual fuel diesel engines occurs sequentially starting with premix burning. The premix burning starts with the ignition delay process. The presence of CNG causes the ignition delay process to become longer, thereby reducing engine performance and increasing emissions on dual fuel diesel engines. This study uses diesel engine type Diamond DI 800 with dual fuel indirect injection model system. The method used a variation of diesel pilot injection timing 110 CA, 130 CA, 150 CA, 170 and 190 CA BTDC. Testing is done with a constant engine speed of 1500 rpm and loading 500 to 3000 watts with 500-watt intervals. The results show that by advancing the diesel pilot injection timing where brake horsepower and the average effective pressure between single fuel and dual fuel is not too far as the current and voltage changes generated by the generator are not too small. While optimal thermal efficiency increased by 4.11%, while CO and HC emissions decreased respectively by 10.85% and 8.28% at occurred at the pilot injection timing 170 CA BTDC but still under the single fuel engine.

Abstract

One of the coal-fired air emissions in boilers is NOx, which has a significant impact on the environment and could cause acid rain, ozone formation, visual impairment and health problems in humans. There are several technologies to reduce and control the formation of NOx emissions, which one of these technologies is the use of over-fire air (OFA). In this research will observe the effect of overfire air (OFA) usage and analyze by numerical 3D modeling method using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in Paiton 9 power plant boiler and analyzed for 5 (five) OFA damper opening variations, i.e 0%, 25%, 50 %, 75% and 100%. This research will analyze several factors that have significant influence on NOx emission formation, that are: the temperature distribution of the boiler during the combustion process, the distribution of nitrogen oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), direction of flue gas flow and trajectory of coal particles and residence time indicating the length of time of burning. The results showed that the lower the flame temperature, the smaller the formation of NOx; the smaller the oxygen content in the combustion process, the smaller the formation of NOx; the shorter the residence time of combustion products in the high temperature zone the smaller the formation of NOx, and the smaller the nitrogen content in coal, the smaller the formation of NOx.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the optimal composition of cocoa pod–coconut shell briquettes based on quality parameters according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), combustion performance in a Natural Updraft Gasifier Stove–type biomass furnace, and technoeconomic aspects. The briquettes were produced in five compositional variations, namely KK100, KK75TK25, KK50TK50, KK25TK75, and TK100. The tests included moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon content, calorific value, energy density, ignition time, combustion rate, combustion duration, water boiling test, and energy cost analysis. The optimal composition was determined using the Multi-Criteria Scoring method, with weighting factors of 40% for SNI quality parameters, 40% for combustion performance, and 20% for technoeconomic aspects. The results showed that increasing the proportion of coconut shells reduced the moisture content from 14.67% to 4.53% and the ash content from 17.89% to 5.56%, while increasing the fixed carbon content from 45.05% to 71.14%. The highest calorific value was obtained for TK100 at 5,956 kcal/kg, while KK25TK75 produced a calorific value of 5,481 kcal/kg. In the combustion performance tests, TK100 exhibited the shortest ignition time (124 seconds), the longest combustion duration (191 minutes), and the shortest water boiling time (4 minutes). The technoeconomic analysis indicated that KK75TK25 had the lowest energy cost at 451.90 Rp/MJ and the highest energy-saving potential at 13.80%. The optimization results showed that TK100 achieved the highest overall score of 99.21. However, all briquette variations did not fully comply with SNI 01-6235-2000 because their volatile matter content exceeded the maximum allowable limit.
