Abstract

This study is motivated by the phenomenon of poverty, which is not merely economic but also cultural, particularly among informal workers such as tukang bawak (grave caretakers) in the Makam Jarak Cemetery area, Surabaya. Tukang bawak are individuals who earn a living by maintaining graves as a means of adapting to economic hardship. In practice, this occupation often involves children, giving rise to the intergenerational transmission of the values associated with the culture of poverty. This study aims to analyze the socio-economic conditions of tukang bawak, identify the cultural values that characterize the culture of poverty, and examine the process through which these values are transmitted to children. The research employs a qualitative approach with a verstehen paradigm to understand the meaning of social actions from the participants' perspectives. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation using a purposive sampling technique. The findings reveal that the socio-economic conditions of tukang bawak are characterized by low educational attainment, unstable income, and a high number of family dependents. The cultural values associated with the culture of poverty include a short-term orientation, fatalistic attitudes, and dependence on external assistance and social networks. These values are transmitted through children's involvement in their parents' work activities, allowing them to become internalized from an early age and thereby increasing the likelihood of perpetuating intergenerational poverty.

Abstract

Social change in religious life is a phenomenon that continues to develop along with changes in social environments, technological advancements, and the dynamics of human interaction. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as Islamic educational institutions play an important role in shaping religious values, norms, and social behavior, yet they cannot be separated from the influence of changing times. This article aims to analyze the pattern of religious interaction changes at Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School through Max Weber’s theory of social action. This study employs a library research method by examining various scientific sources, including journals, books, and previous studies related to social change, religious interaction, Islamic boarding schools, and social action theory. The findings indicate that changes in religious interactions within pesantren are influenced by internal and external factors, such as technological development, changes in communication patterns, social environmental influences, and the adaptation process of students toward emerging values. From Max Weber’s perspective, changes in students’ behavior and social interactions can be understood as forms of social action containing subjective meanings, both oriented toward religious values and influenced by rational considerations in responding to social changes. This study concludes that changes in religious interactions within pesantren not only reflect shifts in social behavior but also represent an adaptation process between traditional pesantren values and the development of modern society.
