Abstract

Miscommunication about the meaning of words in relation to the context of a situation is a common problem faced by both speakers and hearers. It was interesting in finding out about how language functions in human interaction, taking into account the context that affects communication as well as the intents behind utterances. Then, this research aims to identify the types of speech acts used; the most dominant types; the intended meanings of speech acts employed by Enola Holmes in the movie "Enola Holmes." This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on the utterances of the character Enola Holmes. Utilizing George Yule's theoretical framework for speech act analysis, the findings reveal four categories of speech acts: representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. The predominant category identified is representative speech acts, accounting for 127 out of 222 instances (57%). The speech acts in the movie serve various purposes, including stating the truth, providing information, narrating life stories, refusing unwanted propositions, expressing adventure and unselfish assistance, showing friendship, making requests, indicating kinship conversing, and expressing amusement or pleasure. This study sheds light on the numerous functions and meanings that language serves for fictional characters in a movie, like Enola Holmes.

Abstract

This study explores how the Mahabharata has circulated globally through mechanisms such as translation, adaptation, canonization, and scholarly criticism. Drawing on qualitative research methods, this study examines the primary text of the Mahabharata and secondary data from academic journals, books, and critical theories. It highlights the role of translation in preserving the text’s cultural essence while navigating political and ideological challenges, particularly during British colonial rule. Adaptations of the Mahabharata, including its influence on Indonesian Wayang Kulit and Peter Brook’s international theater production, demonstrate the complex process of transforming the epic to suit diverse cultural contexts. The paper also addresses feminist readings of the epic, focusing on the representation of Draupadi, and how modern adaptations challenge traditional portrayals. By analyzing these mechanisms, this study reveals how the Mahabharata has been canonized, critiqued, and integrated into global literary discourse, affirming its enduring relevance and universal appeal.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary speech acts and determine the most dominant type used in the movie Avengers: Endgame. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method using Searle’s theory of speech acts as the analytical framework. The primary data consisted of dialogues spoken by selected characters, namely Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Thanos, and Scott Lang. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques, followed by classification and analysis using content analysis procedures. The findings revealed that five types of illocutionary acts were present in the movie: declarative, assertive, expressive, directive, and commissive. A total of 64 utterances were identified, consisting of 4 declaratives (6%), 16 assertives (25%), 7 expressives (11%), 34 directives (53%), and 3 commissives (5%). Among these, directives were found to be the most dominant type. This dominance indicates that the characters frequently use language to give commands, make requests, and direct actions, reflecting power relations and strategic interactions within the storyline. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how speech acts function in cinematic discourse and highlight the importance of pragmatic competence in interpreting meaning in context.
