Abstract

The free radical scavenging activity of Mangiferaindica L. Leaves had been performed. The methanol extract showed the highest 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging activity among other extracts. Bioassay guided fractionation was performed and yielded three isolated compounds. Their structures were identified as mangiferin (1), friedelin (2) and lupeol (3). Mangiferin exhibited free radical scavenging activity, with an IC50 value of 12.12 µg/mL in vitro.

Abstract

Garcinia tetranda Pierre (Clusiaceae) was reported as source of flavonoid which has various bioactivities forhealth. Pure compound has been isolated by repeat chromatography techniques (Vacuum Column Chromatography, preparative TLC and TLC). UV, IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic data of isolated compound (isolate)compared with the compound which was found before, and showed same as biflavonoid GB-1 data. Antibacterialassay against Salmonella typhi showed lower activity than chloramphenicol. Biflavonoid GB-1 compound foundin this study is different to the previous study, which all of compounds were classified as xanthones. Therefore, result of this study improves compound variability of Garcinia tetranda. However GB-1 is not potentially used asGram-negative antibacterial agent, especially against Salmonella typhi.

Abstract

Moringa oleifera have been evaluated for its antioxidant activity. M. oleifera leaves were extracted with methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and n-hexane. The antioxidant activity of extracts were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay and an improved 2,2’-azino-bis-[3-ethylbenzothiazoline sulphonate] (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay in vitro. Trolox was used as standard with IC50 5.89 μg/mL in DPPH assay and 3.06 μg/mL in ABTS assay. The methanol extract showed the highest free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 49.30 μg/mL in DPPH assay and 11.73 μg/mL in ABTS assay. This study provided that M. oleifera leaves possess antioxidant.

Abstract

New Prenylated stilbene derivatives, 3-hydroxy-4-prenyl-5-methoxy-stilbene acid (1) and 5,4'-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-prenyl-stilbene (2) had been isolated from methanol extract of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. (Pigeon pea), a member of family fabaceae. The aim of this present work was to evaluate its in vitro antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging. Isolation of compounds was achieved by extraction (maceration) and chromatographic technique. The structures of the compounds were determined based on UV, IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra and also by comparing with the previously reported data. Antioxidant activities (IC50) of 1 and 2 were 413.68 μg/mL and 271.53 μg/mL, respectively.

Abstract

Antioxidant activities of Syzygium polyanthum leaves extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and n-hexane) were evaluated by using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazole-6-sulfonic acid) methods. The methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity of DPPH assay among extract with IC50 value of 44.35 mg/mL. In addition, methanol extract also showed the highest antioxidant activity of ABTS assay among extracts with IC50 value of 17.69 mg/mL. This study indicated that the methanol extract of S. polyanthum leaves is potential as antioxidant.

Abstract

A novel selective and sensitive electrochemical sensor for insulin detection has been fabricated and investigated. The electrochemical sensor was made from a mixture of silica gel, chitosan and nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) nanoparticles, which was mounted on a silver wire and covered by a glass tube (silica gel/chitosan/Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles paste electrode). The sensor was characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The anodic and cathodic currents of the silica gel/chitosan paste electrode with Ni(OH)2 are 580 mA and -750 mA, respectively. Without Ni(OH)2, however, the currents are 150 mA and -250 mA, respectively. The sensitivity and limit of detection of the silica gel/chitosan/Ni(OH)2 nanoparticle paste electrode for insulin detection are 5573 × 105pA/pMcm2 and 0.25 pM, respectively. The sensor also shows good reproducibility of measurement for 35 days with an RSD of 0.29%. The fabricated electrodes also show good reproducibility, with an RSD of 1.39%.

Abstract

The sap of kemenyan toba (Styrax sumatrana) is often used as a binder for perfumes, raw materials for cosmetics and medicines, so it is widely traded. However, not many studies have reported about its chemical composition. The process of extracting chemical compounds from kemenyan toba (S. sumatrana) sap quality one was carried out by maceration method using n-hexane and water distillation. The result of maceration was 25.3% of the n-Hexane extract, while the distillation yielded 0.13% (w/w) of a pale-yellow oil. The results of the GC-MS analysis showed that only benzoic acid was present in the extracts and essential oils. n-Hexane extract consists of styrene compounds, cinnamic acid, benzyl benzoate, 1,4-diphenyl-1.4-butanedione, benzyl cinnamates, methyl styrene, and cinnamyl cinnamate. In comparison, essential oil consists of 3-methylpentan-2-one, methyl palmitate, methyl stearate, methyl trans-9.10-epoxystearate, dioctyl hexanedioic, methyl oleic, and methyl-13.16-Octadecanoic. The in-silico test results of several compounds as antiinflammatory showed that the compounds cinnamyl cinnamate had potential as an anti-inflammatory.
