Abstract

Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch Audebert 1798) is an endemic non-human primate in Java Island. Its population decreased because of  destroyed habitat and illegal hunting. One of the ex-situ conservation effort is by building Javan Gibbon Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (JGC). One of the JGC’s purpose is releasing javan gibbon which is ready. Javan gibbons management in JGC should pay attention to animal welfare of javan gibbons. The purposes of this research are knowing the level of animal welfare and preparedness status of javan gibbons for released. The used methods are direct observation to the enclosure, health and javan gibbon its self, focal animal sampling for behaviour observation and interviewing the animal keeper and veterinary. The level of animal welfare of All of the javan gibbons in JGC were in very well category. The sequence of animal welfare level of javan gibbons from the highest to the lowest based on enclosure type were made-introduction enclosure, pair enclosure, and semi-natural-introduction enclosure. The readiness status for release were known that four pairs of  javan javan gibbon   were categories very ready  (Willie-Sasa, Mel-Pooh, Moli-Nency, dan Asep-Dompu), one pair was ready (Robin-Moni) and one pair was not ready yet (Labuan-Kasy).Keywords: Animal welfare, Javan gibbon, Javan gibbon center, Released.

Abstract

Javan gibbon is endemic and endangered species in Java Island, because of that this species needs intensive conservation program. Javan Gibbon Center (JGC) has concern for conservation javan gibbon.  The former research has identified that male javan gibbon in JGC not quite enough to response breeding behavior whose performed by female. Therefore, the research was conducted to stimulating on mating behaviour of male by using sanrego, as one of an aphrodisiac plant with 300 mg dose. Sanrego was give everyday throuhg oral and combined with food. The monitoring start at 06.30 until 16.30 with direct observation, and journalize the behavior in tally sheet between the javan gibbon couple, in particular the male gibbon. The result was show that sanrego was gived the effect to mating behavior of male gibbon, although not until on significant level. Keyword: Aphrodisiac, Javan gibbon, Javan gibbon center, Mating behavior, Sanrego (Lunasia amara).

Abstract

The aim of the research are to analyzed the silage quality, analyze feeding behaviour of timor deer in introduction of silage, to evaluation the effect of alternative feed that is elephant grass, elephant grass silage and waste farm silage (rice straw and banana trunk) to performance of timor deer, from palatability, average daily consumption, average daily gain and feed conversion. Experimental design used completely randomized design with three treatments and three repetition. The treatments were P1: 72% elephant grass and 28% elephant grass silage, P2: 65% elephant grass and 35% rice straw silage, P3: 54% elephant grass and 46% banana trunk silage. Addition 3% molases result good quality silage of elephant grass silage, rice straw silage and banana culm silage in term of physical and chemical characteristics. Timor deer in the captive gave a positive response to eating behaviour and adaptive to the silage as an alternative feed. Analysis of palatability with Manly's Alpha showed there was trend elephant grass silage and banana trunk silage have good palatability than rice straw silage. Analysis of Variance showed that the experiment feed (P1, P2 and P3) were not significantly different effect (p>0.05) to average daily consumption, average daily gain, and feed conversion, but the best feed conversion obtained from P3, so P3 (RGS+SBP) is considered more efficient and profitable than P1 (RGS+SRG) and P2 (RGS+SJP) in biological and economic technically and can be chosen as an alternative feed to Timor deer in the captive.  Keyword: Banana trunk, Elephant grass, Rice straw, Silage, Timor deer

Abstract

Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria Fraser, 1844) is one of endemic bird species in Papua, which population had decreased in the natural habitat due to hunting activities. Ex-situ conservation through captive breeding or captivity is an alternative to sustain the bird population. Observation on it’s daily activities in captivity was expected to result in good captivity technique which would enable the preservation of it’s population and restocking of the species in their natural habitat. The cage was classified a permanent maintenance cage with 40 m × 25 m × 5 m dimensions which made from wall, iron with + 5 cm in diameter, and ram wire for roof. Facilities provided in the cage were among other perch place, eating and drinking place, nesting place, and pond. The cage was regularly cleaned twice a day and sprayed with disinfectant once a month. Temperature in the cage was between 25 – 32oC with moist air ranges between 57 – 78%. The type of diseases suffered by the victoria crowned pigeon were CRD (Chronic Respiratory Disease), intestinal worms, and leg swelling. Technique of pairing, laying or hatchery setting, and native enlargement was naturally done by victoria crowned pigeon’s parent. Factors which support the success of captive breeding management in MBOF were (a) location of the cage which away far from noise and human disturbance; (b) the hygiene, safety, and care of the cage; (c) the feeding routine given every morning and evening; (d) provision of medication and vitamins on regular basis to maintain good health and prevent disease from attacking the birds in captivity; and (e) maintenance of genetic purity and avoidance of inbreeding occurenes. Type of behavior that can be used to distinguish the sex of the victoria crowned pigeon was dancing behaviour performed by male individuals. Keywords: victoria crowned pigeon, captive, daily activity, behaviour, breeding successfullt,

Abstract

The existence of sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) are increasingly threatened due to habitat loss and ilegal huntingt. One of  sambar deer’s stronghold population in Kalimantan  is Tanjung Puting National Park (TNTP). Population decline of sambar deer can be avoided by habitat management. This study aimed to reveal food plants that potentially eaten by the deer and productivity and carrying capacityof the deer’s habitat.  This study was focused in Teluk Pulai Resort  of  TPNP.  The study revealed that sambar deer consumed at least 53 species of plant including into  33 families. Parts of plants eaten by sambar deerconsisted leaves (31 species), leaves and stems (4 species), leaves and flowers (6 species), leaves and fruits (10 species) and fruit (2 species). The distribution patterns of sambar deer’s food plants were clumped distribution (57,38%), random (16,39%) and unknown (26,23%).  Productivity of the habitat was  1.809.879,644 kg day-1 to 2.613.587,565 kg day-1, resulting an estimate of carrying capacity of 2 individuals ha-1. Keywords: Sambar deer, food plant,  distribution pattern,  carrying capacity

Abstract

Pangolin (Manis javanica, Desmarest 1822) has believed by many peoples as  food and medicine who have a high economic value, so demand of pangolin tend increase. Wild harvesting  from natural habitat are  the way always  used to  supply of   demand,  and this was affecting to wild population has been decrease significantly. Captive breeding programs in the ex situ area is  the best alternative solution to support the demand sustainability and its conservastion in natural habitat. The question is, “ did success possibilities to captive breeding? Based on the study have been done about animal behaviour and implementation of some technical of captive breeding program,we would like to say that the captive breeing program of pangolin could be success. Key words: pangolin, behaviour, daily activities, captive breeding
