Abstract

This study aims to elaborate on The Beatles band through a study of one of its songs called Yellow Submarine. This study uses the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, an approach that aims to describe, interpret, and critically explain in a qualitative manner about how discourse builds, maintains, and legitimizes social inequalities. A number of relevant primary and secondary literatures were studied and analyzed critically to understand and recognize the process of creating, producing, broadcasting, concert performance, and public reception for the song Yellow Submarine by the Beatles and its socio-cultural context. The results of the study showed that this song was dedicated to children who lost the joy and delight of their childhood due to ideological conflicts (capitalism-communism), social tensions, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, drugs, etc., in the 1960s. Although this song has been associated with various interpretations, ranging from drugs, money, war, peace, cowardice to death, most of The Beatles’ fans and observers believe there is an element of joy and delight that they would like to present to their children. They gave joy and delight, especially to children, when the state failed to provide them.

Abstract

The distribution of charity to mustahik (zakat recipients) initially followed a personal and traditional consumer-based model, typically through the direct provision of daily necessities in the form of wealth donations. Most scholars emphasize the requirement of tamlik (transfer of ownership) when distributing zakat. In the contemporary era, BAZ (Badan Amil Zakat) and LAZ (Lembaga Amil Zakat) evolved their distribution methods through programs that include not only the transfer of wealth but also non-material forms, such as education, healthcare, empowerment, and social or da'wah initiatives. This study employs a qualitative case study approach, aiming to examine the reconstruction of charity distribution comprehensively and deeply from the perspective of contemporary Islamic law and social change. The research findings indicate a shift in distribution patterns from traditional consumer models to more creative and productive models. These are implemented through various programs, including scholarship schemes, health services, and economic empowerment initiatives. Additionally, the scope of Sabilillah beneficiaries has expanded to include incentives for TPQ (Qur'anic education) teachers, Qur'an memorizers, and training for future preachers. These transformations reflect an effort to adapt zakat distribution to current societal needs through a process of accommodation.

Abstract

This paper focuses on activities of Korean Cultural Center Indonesia (KCCI) through the analysis of Korean government policies regarding public diplomacy by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). KCC is affiliated organization under the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) under Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST). KCC is established in foreign countries to spread Korean culture and enhance national image through political communication with public. Since the beginning, KCCI has shown contradictory tendencies. On one hand, their mission is to show Korea's strength, but on the other hand, they organize cultural exchange programs that imply equality between the Korean side and its partners. By using a public diplomacy 3.0 theory which is based on cosmopolitanism to evaluate KCCI’s practices, this paper finds that practice of public diplomacy by KCCI is still consisted within public diplomacy 2.0 which is focus on enhancement of national image and creation of a favorable diplomatic environment due to holding hegemony in global soft power competition.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper explores the representation of cross-border and cross-ideological narratives in literary and dramatic works from the Dutch East Indies era. It focuses on five categories: Dutch, Indies, Peranakan-Tionghoa, Balai Pustaka, and non-Balai Pustaka Bumiputera literature. The study aims to: (1) classify these works based on racial and ideological markers; (2) analyze how identity and ideology are represented within each category; and (3) examine how counter-knowledge and resistance to colonial discourse are articulated in the texts. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research involves close reading of texts to identify identity representations, gathering contextual data on authorship, and analyzing ideological patterns across categories. Findings reveal that Dutch and Indies authors often construct Native characters through a Western, objectifying lens, reinforcing colonial hierarchies. In contrast, non-Balai Pustaka Bumiputera writers frequently resist these narratives, offering critical perspectives on racism and colonial subjectivity through localized, spiritual, and humanistic views. The study further identifies how Western literary discourse relegates Native works to the “Batjaan Liar” (wild reading) category, while Eastern narratives challenge imperialist classifications. While authorial ideology often aligns with racial or institutional affiliation, some texts reveal ideological divergence. Ultimately, this research contributes a decolonial perspective that critiques Western modernity’s portrayal of the Native, going beyond conventional postcolonial approaches that focus primarily on colonial impact. It emphasizes the importance of Indigenous resistance and epistemology in shaping literary discourse during the colonial period.

Abstract

Travel writing serves as a crucial medium through which narrators document and interpret their encounters with foreign cultures. This study examines Hanum Salsabiela’s Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika (BTLA) to explore how the narrator reports on the United States, expresses her self-identity during her journey in the United States, and represents the people of the United States through the lens of postcolonial travel writing. This research is significant because the narrator not only depicts the United States as a geographical and cultural space but also highlights the presence of Islam within it. As the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, it is not surprising that many Indonesian travel writers are drawn to Islamic regions such as the Middle East. However, in recent years, some have begun to explore Western countries, which differ significantly in culture and religion. The data collection methods used in this research are textual observation and note-taking. In addition, the data analysis employs discourse analysis grounded in the postcolonial travel writing paradigms of Carl Thompson. In conclusion, the study indicates that the United States is portrayed as a metropolitan country, yet it continues to face overlapping social issues, including homelessness, Islamophobia, and discrimination. BTLA functions as self-reflective travel writing, using the United States as a space for the narrator to explore and reflect on her identity as a Muslim. Furthermore, in representing the Other, the narrator still exhibits traces of a neo-colonial attitude, even though she strives to present a cosmopolitan perspective.

Abstract

The third-year of service activities (2021) at the Komunitas Sastra Darussalam were centered on training in writing local stories of the magical genre. Komunitas Sastra Darussalam has the potential to maximize the pesantren’s cultural background as the basis for their writing, such as through the genre of magical realism which is considered very close to their lives. Through training and mentoring held by the service community team, it is expected that they will ignite their ability to continue developing to compete at the national or global level. In the first year (2019), activities are focused on developing story ideas that produce mini-fictions about life with a pesantren background. In the second year (2020), service participants received training on writing realism genre literary works. So, in the third year (2021), the activities focused on the story’s substance, that is rewriting local stories (folklore) with the magical genre. From this training and mentoring that has been carried out, it was found that the tendency of writing local stories by KSD writers has shown its magical side. The stories explored by the participants were quite diverse, not only tending to explore local stories, but the participants also showed their tendencies as a pesantren community, some of them took stories with a magical substance that developed in Islam.
