Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an essential component of learning English as a foreign language because it supports students’ ability to understand and communicate effectively. However, many vocational high school students still experience difficulties in mastering vocabulary due to limited learning media and low classroom engagement. Interactive posters present vocabulary through images, colors, keywords, and interactive activities that encourage students to participate actively during learning. In addition, the interactive posters integrated visual elements and task-based interactions to enhance students’ vocabulary engagement during the learning process. This study investigates the effectiveness of interactive poster media in improving students’ English vocabulary mastery. This study employed a quantitative method using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The participants were 35 students of class XI BCF at a vocational high school in Purworejo. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment and analyzed using a Paired Sample T-Test. The findings showed that the mean score increased from 80.71 in the pre-test to 86.29 in the post-test, with a mean difference of 5.58 points. The statistical analysis revealed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was lower than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after the implementation of visual-interactive materials. Therefore, interactive posters can be considered an effective alternative learning medium to enhance students’ engagement and vocabulary learning outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract   This study aims to examine university students’ perceptions of watching English-language movies for listening development, focusing on perceived impact, attitudes, and learning obstacles. Although audiovisual media are widely used in English language learning, limited research has examined learners’ subjective experiences in listening development, especially within the Indonesian EFL context. A descriptive qualitative design was employed involving five undergraduate students from an English Education department at Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. Participants were selected through purposive sampling based on their experience in using English-language movies as an educational tool. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive frequency analysis and thematic analysis. The findings show that students perceive English movies as beneficial for improving listening comprehension, increasing exposure to authentic spoken language, and enhancing familiarity with native speakers’ accents and speech patterns. Students also demonstrate positive attitudes, reflected in increased motivation, enjoyment, and reduced anxiety during listening activities. However, they encounter several obstacles, including fast speech rate, background sounds, and limited vocabulary, which hinder comprehension. The study concludes that English movies serve as an effective supplementary medium for listening development, although pedagogical support such as subtitles, vocabulary preparation, and repeated viewing is required to optimize learning outcomes.

Abstract

Digital learning has increasingly been integrated into English language education due to the widespread accessibility of mobile technology. Nevertheless, the use of internet-based digital media for teaching listening skills in EFL contexts remains limited. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Preparation for the TOEFL Test application in improving students’ listening comprehension and to explore students’ perceptions of its use as a mobile-assisted learning tool. This research employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving 22 EFL undergraduate students. Listening comprehension was measured using a TOEFL-format listening test administered before and after a four-week intervention period. Quantitative analysis revealed a significant improvement in students’ listening performance. The mean score increased from 60.23 in the pretest to 73.73 in the posttest. A paired-samples t-test confirmed that this improvement was statistically significant (t = −17.173, p < 0.001), indicating that the application effectively enhanced students’ listening comprehension. Students’ perceptions were collected through a structured questionnaire. The results showed that most students responded positively to the application. More than 70% of participants agreed or strongly agreed that the application was easy to use, accessible anytime and anywhere, and helpful in supporting independent learning. The application’s structured materials and listening-focused features also increased students’ motivation and engagement in listening practice. The Preparation for the TOEFL Test application proved to be an effective mobile-assisted learning tool for improving EFL students’ listening comprehension while fostering positive learner perceptions.

Abstract

Writing is a challenging skill for students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, particularly in producing recount texts due to difficulties in generating ideas, organizing content, and applying appropriate language features. This study aims to investigate the effect of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on students’ recount text writing skills. A quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed, involving 32 tenth-grade students. The data were collected through writing tests and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores; however, the results indicated a decline in students’ writing performance after the implementation of PBL. This suggests that PBL, in this context, was not effective in improving students’ recount text writing skills. The findings highlight that the effectiveness of PBL is influenced by factors such as the duration of implementation, the level of instructional scaffolding, and students’ readiness to engage in student-centered learning. Therefore, it is recommended that PBL be implemented gradually with sufficient guidance and longer duration to achieve optimal results. This study contributes to the understanding of the practical challenges in applying student-centered learning approaches in EFL writing classrooms.

Abstract

This study aimed to test the effectiveness of the Engoo Web App in improving fifth-grade students' English reading skills. A quantitative experimental research design was used involving 60 students, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test instruments and analyzed through descriptive statistics, N-Gain analysis, and the Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean post-test score (M = 82.45) than the control group (M = 71.30), with a moderate N-Gain of 0.56, compared to 0.28 in the control group. The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05), indicating that the improvement in reading skills was influenced by the instructional treatment. The effectiveness of the Engoo Web App can be attributed to its interactive and multimodal features, including structured reading materials, pronunciation guides, and audio support, which align with constructivist learning principles and encourage active student engagement. Despite its positive findings, this study is limited by its small sample size and short intervention period. Future research is recommended to involve larger samples and longer treatment durations to further explore the long-term effects of digital reading platforms on the development of English reading skills.
