Abstract

Oil palm cultivated in the replanting area did not grow optimally because most were attacked by horn beetles (Oryctes rhinoceros L.). The percentage of horn beetle attacks was high, namely 80% in 3 year old plants and 100% at 1-1.5 years old. It is known that residual replanting waste is the cause of the high horn beetle population because rotting oil palm trunks become a suitable habitat for horn beetle development. To overcome the problems faced by partners, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is applied. IPM components that will be applied are technical culture, mechanics, and semiochemical control with pheromones. This activity aims to reduce the level of damage to the horn beetle pest on oil palm plants after replanting. This activity is carried out using counseling methods, training, demonstration plots (pilots), providing assistance with tools and machines, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The results of the activity showed that the partners were able to independently implement integrated pest management (IPM) on their respective lands. Assembled IPM technology that has been applied can reduce the attack rate of horn beetles from 86.68% to 79.60%. Until now, IPM equipment is still installed and operated by partner farmer groups. The application of IPM at the demonstration plot locations can significantly reduce the horn beetle population, as well as no more visible symptoms of new plants being attacked. The sustainable application of IPM, covering large-scale land, involving all oil palm business actors will increase the chances of success of the method in the future. will come.

Abstract

The initial population of Nilaparvata lugens was obtained from the field and developed in the entomology and toxicology laboratory of the plant protection department of Halu Oleo University. This study began with mass cultivation of the N. lugens insect pest. This was followed by selecting the LC50 concentration based on mortality at 72 hours after treatment. The results of the probit analysis found an LC50 value 3.16 ml/L for the insecticide deltamethrin. The high recommended concentration found for the insecticide deltamethrin is suspected because it is not recommended for use on N. lugens in rice fields. Increasing the frequency of application at sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) was shown to trigger an increase in the resurgence ratio of 1.50 and 1.70 times, respectively, compared to the control group.

Abstract

Nickel mining activities have been identified as a factor in insect biodiversity degradation. This study aimed to evaluate insect community parameters, including species, diversity, abundance, and evenness, by comparing post-mining and natural land in Amonggedo District, Konawe Regency. Sampling was conducted using sweep net, pitfall trap, and light trap methods. The findings showed a significant decrease in species richness in the post-mining land (4 orders, 6 families, 11 individuals) compared to the control land (6 orders, 11 families, 104 individuals). Although both locations had a moderate diversity index (H’) (1.55 vs. 1.72), the post-mining land recorded a higher evenness index (E) (0.86), indicating a more balanced distribution between families but with a much lower population. Dominance shifted from Ectobiidae in the natural land to Crambidae and Scoliidae in the post-mining area, confirming a transformation in community structure due to the impact of nickel mining.

Syahrawati M, Nelly N, Hamid H, Efendi S. 2018. Short Communication: Abundance of corn planthopper (Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy 1907, Hemiptera: Delphacidae) on five new corn varieties. Biodiversitas 19: 1029-1034. Both local and hybrid corn varieties have been attacked by Stenocranus pacificus or corn planthopper frequently grown in West Sumatra. So, the basic aim of the study is to know about the abundance of S. pacificus on major five corn varieties that will be intermittently released viz., N35, N37, NT10, NT104, and NT105. The study was conducted around palm plantation in Dharmasraya District using Randomized Block Design in 5 replications. The observations were made at weekly intervals throughout the season after planting up to 8 weeks. Number of S. pacificus were collected from 16 hills by using simple aspirator, selected randomly from each unit. The measurement of leaf length, leaf width, stem diameter and trichome length were also performed to confirm the physical effect of S. pacificus preferences. LSD test at 5% level of significance was done to determine the influence of different varieties on insect population. The S. pacificus preferably effect to NT10 variety as compared to other varieties from the early growth of corn, but the S. pacificus abundance was higher at the generative phase than the vegetative. There was a very rapid increase in its population from week to week. Physical factors of the plant, as like as trichome, affected the insect abundance.

Abstract. Busniah M, Efendi S, Trizelia, Hermanda S. 2025. Helopeltis theivora dynamics and damage on cocoa clones under agronomic management in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 5118-5124. This study analyzed the comparative resistance of cocoa clones to Helopeltis theivora in two types of cocoa plantations in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The comparison was made between plantations intensively managed by CV Scorpio and small plantations, focusing on two main clones, ICS 60 and TSH 858. The results showed that cocoa cultivation practices in intensive and smallholder cocoa plantations affected the abundance, percentage, and intensity of damage caused by H. theivora. The population and damage levels of H. theivora were higher in smallholder cocoa plantations than in intensive plantations. The type of clone cultivated also affects the abundance and damage level of H. theivora on cocoa plants. ICS 60 clone showed resistance to H. theivora compared to TSH 858 clone. Only the resistance of these clones to H. theivora was affected by cocoa cultivation practices. The resistance of these clones decreased in cocoa plantations that were not intensively managed. Secondary branches were the location of the highest damage intensity, and H. theivora showed a preference for attacking pods measuring 7-15 cm on ICS 60 and >15 cm on TSH 858. This study clearly shows that intensive cultivation practices play an important role in controlling the population of the pest H. theivora. The choice of cocoa clones is also a determining factor. The ICS 60 clone is more resistant to H. theivora. However, genetic resistance in cocoa clones is not absolute. Synergy between the selection of appropriate clones and good cultivation practices is the key to successful control of H. theivora.

Abstract

Dependence on synthetic insecticides for controlling Spodoptera frugiperda has led to various adverse effects, including pest resistance, mortality of non-target organisms, and environmental pollution. These concerns necessitate the development of alternative control strategies, such as botanical insecticides that are both effective and environmentally friendly. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity and potential synergistic interactions of a hexane extract mixture of Piper retrofractum (Pr) and Annona squamosa (As) against second-instar larvae of S. frugiperda. Toxicity assays were conducted using the feed residue method in a completely randomized design with five extract mixture ratios of Pr:As (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 w/w), each replicated five times. The results showed that the 2:1 (w/w) ratio was the most effective combination, yielding the lowest LC50 and LC95 values of 0.03% and 0.12%, respectively, at 96 hours after treatment. A higher proportion of Pr in the extract mixture tended to produce faster and more pronounced lethal effects on S. frugiperda larvae, and vice versa. The 2:1 (w/w) ratio also exhibited strong and stable synergistic interactions at all observation times at both LC50 and LC95 levels. This enhanced effectiveness is likely attributable to synergistic interactions among the active compounds present in each extract. These findings indicate that a mixture of P. retrofractum and A. squamosa extracts at a 2:1 (w/w) ratio has strong potential as an effective and efficient botanical insecticide to support the implementation of sustainable integrated pest management strategies.

Abstract

Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr.) agroecosystems provide important ecological functions in tropical agricultural landscapes, particularly as habitats for pollinator insects and other arthropod communities. However, information regarding insect diversity and the influence of environmental factors on pollinator activity in sugar palm agroecosystems remains limited in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate insect diversity and community structure, and to examine the relationships between abiotic factors and insect abundance in sugar palm agroecosystems in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Field observations were conducted in Lintau Buo and Sungayang Districts in 2025. Insects associated with sugar palm inflorescences were sampled during morning and afternoon observation periods using direct observation and sweep net methods. Community structure was analyzed using diversity, evenness, richness, and dominance indices. At the same time, the effects of abiotic variables on pollinator abundance were assessed using Negative Binomial Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and Spearman rank correlation analysis. A total of 2,297 insect individuals were recorded, consisting of 1,858 pollinator insects and 439 visitor insects belonging to 13 genera. Pollinator communities were dominated by Apis spp., Vespa sp., Polyrhachis spp., Episyrphus sp., and Tetragonula spp. Diversity analysis indicated moderate insect diversity, with high evenness and low dominance, suggesting relatively stable ecological conditions within the agroecosystem. Negative Binomial GLM revealed that rainfall significantly reduced pollinator abundance (Estimate = −0.084 ± 0.021 SE, p < 0.001), while relative humidity also negatively affected pollinator activity (p = 0.006). Spearman correlation analysis confirmed a strong negative relationship between rainfall and pollinator abundance (rs = −0.82, p < 0.01). These findings demonstrate that sugar palm agroecosystems support diverse insect communities and highlight the importance of environmental conditions in regulating pollinator activity within tropical agroforestry systems.
