Abstract

significant contribution to those who living in and around mangrove forests. Like any othercommunities who occupied areas surrounding forest sites, Papuan ethnic groups really connectand integrate with the forest environment such as mangrove forests. This paper is a review ofrelated literatures that compiled from different research which have been conducted inUniversitas Negeri Papua (UNIPA) on utilization of mangrove by local ethnic groups and its rolefor other life biota in Papua. The results indicated that mangrove plays a very important rolefor local tribes in Papua as food sources, construction materials and source of energy, traditional medicine sources and wildlife habitat that are usually consumed by the communities.Ecology-based tourism or ecotourism as one leading sector of mangrove forests in Papua, though has a good potential, has not been optimizedly used.

Abstract

Many people in West Papua value forest for the benefits obtained from the extraction of plants and animals. Hunting and gathering of wild animals has always been and continues to be an important aspect of life in rural West Papuan communities. Even in modern days, some ethnic groups in West Papua depend almost entirely on hunting as a part of their tradition (Pattiselanno, 2003). In other words, hunting is one of the main ways of living.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Culturally, the relationship between the people and wild animals in Papua is close-knitted and inseparable. In response to this, through the Manokwari Menyapa program of RRI Manokwari, we share information about the current relationship between people and wildlife during the Covid-19 pandemic. This community service activity is carried out through radio broadcasts, which is an interactive program between listeners and informants on Monday, July 20, 2020. Listeners’ responses vary widely including the impact of consuming animal meat, keeping animals as pet animals, and the consequences of forest loss to the intense exposure of animals to the people. Another thing that was revealed was the extent of the role of academics in efforts to reduce the current spread of the Covid-19 virus. This activity shows that the dissemination of information through electronic media (radio) related to the issue of the Covid-19 epidemic is very good and effective. The media’s wide reach for people who can follow the radio broadcasts of RRI Pro2FM Manokwari benefits this program so much. This activity provides input to us regarding the public’s understanding of the Covid-19 pandemic and the proper follow-up actions that should be considered by the authorities to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the community. Intense dissemination of information about the Covid-19 virus now needs to be done as an effort to raise awareness for ordinary people who do not understand well the dangers of this virus for human health. Abstract

Abstract A deeper knowledge regarding the biology of the reproduction of tropical deer in its natural habitat is limited. The appearance of a standing tail and increased urination behavior are sexual characteristics of female deer. This research aims to study the mating behavior of females based on urination activity and upright-tail appearance in female Timor deer. The results showed that the lowest urination frequency of female deer (12.37%) occurred between 10.0012.00, while the highest (22.22%) was between 08.00-10.00. The appearance of tails that stand upright most often occurs in 06.00 - 08.00 (26.55%), and the lowest (8.19%), observed at 12.00-14.00. This study concludes that urination activity and appearance of upright tails was an indicator of the sexual desire of female deer to be mated by the male. Keywords: Behavior; Captivity; Female deer; Mating; Urinating Abstrak Pengetahuan yang mendalam mengenai biologi reproduksi rusa tropik yang ditangkarkan pada habitat aslinya masih sangat terbatas. Abstract

ABSTRACT Wau-Weyaf Beach is the nesting ground of six species of turtles, including the world's largest turtle, the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The University of Papua (UNIPA) Manokwari, since 2009 has been directly involved in the turtle nesting area protection program by involving the students of UNIPA through the Community Service Program (KKN). In 2016, students carried out the KKN Program starting from June 30th to August 16th in Kampung Wau-Weyaf, one of the leatherback turtles’ egg-laying locations in Abun. This paper is a part of the Community Service Program which is carried out in the said village. The activities conducted during the KKN include both formal and non-formal education, religious education, and environmental education. Education-based KKN directly helps to improve public awareness which, in turn, supports the efforts to protect and save the leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) on the coast of Abun, Tambrau. The same approach is also able to improve the calistung (the capability to read, write, and count) ability of school children along with their awareness to maintain the cleanliness of their homes, school, and village environment. Keywords: Education; Conservation; Turtle; Wau-Weyaf ABSTRAK Pantai Wau-Weyaf merupakan tempat bertelur bagi 6 jenis penyu, termasuk penyu terbesar di dunia, Penyu Belimbing (Dermochelys coriacea). Abstract

Investment of parasitic worms of captive wildlife was an impact on their health condition. This study was conducted to determine the intensity of parasitic worm infection in wild animals kept by communities in Manokwari, West Papua. The Natif method was used, by centrifuge of 20 birds and 20 mammals (Kangaroo and Deer) faeces collected from the sites. Sampling was carried out from October to November 2016. The analysis of collected faecal samples showed that bird species were not indicated (negatively infected by worm). In mammals, Nematodes and cestodes were found. Identification of existing findings showed that 3 (three) types of worm eggs were found, namely Taenia sp in kangaroos (Macropodidae), Ascaris sp (berembrio), and stronyle sp in deer (Cervus timorensis). The highest parasites intensity was stronyle sp (10 worm eggs) and the lowest intensity was Ascaris sp (3 worm eggs) .The rate of infection and investment of parasitic worm eggs in wild animals in Manokwari was categorised relatively low.
