Abstract

Abstract

Synbiotics, the synergistic combination of probiotics and prebiotics, have attracted growing scientific interest due to their potential to modulate immune responses. However, the immunomodulatory effects of synbiotics derived from traditional foods remain underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the immune-enhancing potential of synbiotics formulated from Lactobacillus fermentum isolated from Dangke (a traditional South Sulawesi cheese) and inulin extracted from Dahlia tubers. The novelty of this work lies in the utilization of culturally unique, locally sourced microbial and prebiotic components that have not previously been tested for immunological impact. A total of 28 mice were randomly divided into four groups: one negative control group (P0) and three treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) receiving different doses of synbiotics over a 20-day treatment period. Parameters observed included changes in body weight, macrophage phagocytosis activity, and organ indices (liver and spleen). Results showed that mice in P1 and P2 groups exhibited significant increases in body weight (P1: +12.5%, P2: +15.3%, p < 0.05) compared to the control. Moreover, macrophage phagocytic activity was markedly improved in the treatment groups (p < 0.01). Liver and spleen indices were also significantly elevated (p < 0.05), indicating enhanced organ function. These findings suggest that synbiotics containing L. fermentum and Dahlia inulin have promising immunomodulatory effects, highlighting their potential for development as novel functional food ingredients with health-promoting benefits.

Abstract

The high maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) are the main cases in the health sector. Efforts to prevent this are encouraged to utilize plants that contain antifertility compounds, for example with papaya seeds (Carica papaya) which are able to minimize the side effects of contraceptive use. This study aims to determine the description of uterine histopathology of female ICR mice (Mus musculus) after administration of papaya seed extract (Carica papaya). The stages are determining the dose of papaya seed extract (Carica papaya), making papaya seed extract (Carica papaya), preparation and treatment of experimental animals, as well as making and reading uterine histopathology preparations of mice. The results showed that the administration of papaya seed extract (Carica papaya) for 34 days orally at a dose of 0.5 ml/bb was able to disrupt reproductive cells in mice (Mus musculus) characterized by abnormal endometrial thickening along with the amount of dose given.

Abstract

Sicydiinae gobies have been widely collected and identified throughout tropical indo-pacific, except in Karama River, Mamuju, West Sulawesi, Indonesia. Penja was the Gobi fish’s local name, where the pelvic disc is adherent to the belly. This study aims to describe the habitat and growth patterns of genus Sicyopterus in Karama river, which passes through three sub-districts from upstream to downstream. The research was conducted in Karama River from four sites: Kalumpang, Bonehau, Arassi, and Kalonding. Fish growth was described by Deroberts and William model, and continued with habitat characteristics. The total number of fish from four sites about 71 adults Gobiidae fish, identified as family Gobiidae: Sicyopterus longifilis and Sicyopterus pugnans. The average growth pattern in all sites is isometric negative (b<3), except in the Kalumpang sites, growth pattern for Sicyopterus longifilis is isometric (b=3) whereas in Sicyopterus pugnans in the Kalumpang sites growth pattern is positive allometric (b>3).

Abstract

Abstract. Sijid SA, Sonjaya H, Malaka R, Hasbi H. 2025. GC-MS profiling and molecular docking of bioactive compounds from Strychnos lucida on reproductive protein targets. Biodiversitas 26: 3469-3484. Strychnos lucida, locally known as Kayu Ular (KU), is traditionally used in various regions of Indonesia, commonly used to enhance stamina and vitality, with anecdotal claims suggesting benefits related to reproductive function. This study aimed to evaluate the plant’s potential in reproductive health through phytochemical screening, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and molecular docking analysis. The extract was obtained by macerating the plant material in 96% ethanol. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, which are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hormonal modulatory activities. Among them, flavonoids and saponins are particularly known to improve fertility enhancement and hormonal balance. A total of 66 compounds were identified by GC-MS, with Lunacrine (52.71%) as the most abundant. Molecular docking was conducted on four dominant compounds—Lunacrine, (Z)-11-octadecenoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, and (9Z,12Z)-octadeca-9,12-dienoic acid—against five reproductive-related protein targets: AMPK, SIRT1, COX-2, PPAR-?, and Dynein. Lunacrine exhibited strong binding affinities with the target receptors AMPK (-7.8 kcal/mol), SIRT1 (-8.5 kcal/mol), and COX-2 (-8.9 kcal/mol), suggesting its potential to modulate energy metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation—critical processes in hormonal regulation and reproductive function. These findings support the traditional use of S. lucida for reproductive health and highlight Lunacrine as a promising candidate for further phytopharmaceutical development. Follow-up in vitro and in vivo studies are recommended to validate its therapeutic potential.
