Abstract

Mathematics is an important foundation in developing critical and logical thinking skills, which are reflected through mathematical literacy. However, PISA 2022 scores show that Indonesian students' mathematical literacy is still below the international average, with the main weakness in solving HOTS questions. This qualitative research aims to analyze the relationship between self-regulated learning (SRL) and students' mathematical literacy in solving HOTS problems related to System of Linear Equations of Three Variables (SPLTV) at Singa Putih Munfaridin Islamic Boarding School, Pasuruan. Data were collected through HOTS tests, SRL questionnaires, and interviews with grade X students who were grouped into three SRL categories: low, medium, and high. The results showed that students with high SRL could formulate problems efficiently, apply systematic strategies, and interpret solutions independently. Medium SRL students have difficulty in applying concepts due to inaccuracy and also fail to independently verify solutions, with conclusions often adapted from classmates. Low SRL students only reached the formulation stage and failed at the application and interpretation stages. These findings reinforce Zimmerman & Schunk's theory that SRL involves a cycle of planning, monitoring and self-evaluation.

Abstract

Indonesian students are lacking in critical thinking skills, however, studies analyzing critical thinking processes and their relation to thinking styles are limited. This study aimed to describe students critical thinking processes in solving jumping task problems according to Gregorc's thinking style. The subjects of this present qualitative research were eight Year 7 students. The instruments included a thinking style questionnaire, tests, and interview guidelines. The results showed that concrete sequential subjects tended to write the completion stages sequentially and analyzed them well. Abstract sequential subjects were inclined to solve the problems based on the known concepts without completing the work. Concrete random subjects tended to write information in their own way without completing their work. Meanwhile, abstract random subjects were inclined to write incomplete information and did not complete their work. Generally, based on the IDEALS model, the two sequential subjects were similar in the identity, define, and enumerate steps, while the two random subjects only had similarities in the identity step. This study results imply that jumping tasks can be used as an alternative in developing students critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review preservice teacher mathematical reasoning in solving mathematical problems from a cognitive psychology perspective. A systematic literature review was conducted on indexed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025, resulting in about forty studies relevant to mathematical reasoning, problem solving, proof, and cognitive and affective factors among university students or pre service teachers. Articles were collected from international and national databases using combinations of mathematical reasoning, university students, cognitive psychology, metacognition, beliefs, and habits of mind and then selected through identification, screening, and eligibility stages. The synthesis indicates that students’ mathematical reasoning is generally at a moderate level with weaknesses in generalization and formal proof, while procedural manipulation tends to be stronger. Working memory, metacognition, thinking dispositions, and positive beliefs about mathematics positively correlate with reasoning quality, whereas anxiety and negative beliefs hinder students’ willingness to argue and explore non routine strategies. Several instructional models such as problem based, realistic, cooperative, and reflection oriented learning supported by metacognitive scaffolding are consistently reported to improve mathematical reasoning. This review highlights the need to integrate high level mathematical task design with deliberate management of students' cognitive and affective characteristics in university mathematics education.

Abstract

Concrete learning media are very important for children with special needs because they can improve understanding through visualization and engaging message delivery. Based on observations at Jember Special School Type C (Education and Care Centre), learning media are rarely used, especially when teaching integer material. This study aims to describe the process and outcomes of developing a pop-up book learning medium tailored to the different types of children with special needs, ensuring its validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The study employs a modified 4-D development model within a Research and Development (R&D) framework. Data were collected through validation sheets, user response questionnaires, interview guides, and learning outcome tests. Three methods of data analysis were used: validity analysis, practicality analysis, and effectiveness analysis. The validation results showed average scores of 3.67, 3.69, and 3.54 for learning media designed for students with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and visual impairments, respectively, which are categorized as valid. The media were then tested on nine students at Jember Special School Type C, consisting of seven students with intellectual disabilities, one student with visual impairment, and one student with physical disability. Practicality analysis was conducted based on student and teacher response questionnaire scores, which were 80.25% and 80.75%, respectively, indicating a good level of practicality. The learning outcome test showed a 100% mastery level, indicating that the learning media met the criteria for effectiveness. This research is expected to serve as a reference for other researchers who wish to develop similar instructional media or further develop pop-up book learning media for other types of children with special needs.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the problem-solving abilities of low-performing students in addressing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions on sequences and series based on the stages proposed by Krulik and Rudnick. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed in this research. Thirty senior high school students completed a problem-solving test, from which two students who obtained the lowest scores were purposively selected for in-depth analysis and semi-structured interviews. Data were collected through written tests and interviews and analyzed using Miles' stages of qualitative data analysis. The results indicated that at the read and think stage, students were able to identify relevant information but demonstrated a limited understanding of the relationships among the given data. At the explore and plan stage, students attempted to organize information but encountered difficulties, particularly when dealing with sequence-related problems. At the select a strategy stage, students identified the appropriate formula; however, they showed hesitation in applying it correctly. At the find an answer stage, students performed computational procedures but often produced inaccurate results. Finally, at the reflect and extend stage, students tended to draw conclusions without verifying the correctness of their solutions. Overall, the main difficulties were evident in conceptual understanding, consistency in strategy application, and reflective evaluation.
