Abstract

Chili is one of the most economically valuable commodities cultivated worldwide. The high interest in chili can be attributed to capsaicin, which provides a spicy sensation when consumed. The level of interest in chili cultivation does not necessarily correlate with the yields obtained. The loss in production and yield can be attributed to the disruption of the Colletotrichum spp., which causes anthracnose disease. Breeding for anthracnose-resistant chili has been a focus of research for many scientists in various countries. Conventional and molecular methods are employed in the production of anthracnose-resistant chilies. This study will examine a range of articles and investigate the development of anthracnose-resistant chilies. The article was searched in the Scopus database. The articles were filtered based on the publication date range of 2014 to 2024, resulting in 343 articles. Furthermore, the articles were evaluated based on predetermined criteria, resulting in the identification of 22 articles. The breeding of anthracnose-resistant chili plants employs a range of conventional and molecular techniques to identify the most suitable lines. Various techniques, including crossing and different kinds of selection, were employed and validated through the development of molecular markers. Markers and genes have been identified, including RA80f6_r1, RA80f6_g1, RA80f6_g2, and RCT1, which are responsible for anthracnose resistance. This review provides an overview of the various anthracnose-resistant chili breeding methods.

Abstract

Mekarjaya Village, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency, is one of the best coffee producers in West Java. The location at the bottom of Mount Puntang makes this area dominated by coffee cultivation. The coffee bean production process also impacts the accumulation of coffee waste because half of the coffee cherries are mostly not used as a commercial products. Community service in the form of processing coffee skin waste is needed to deal with the problem of coffee waste and increase its added value. One derivative product that is starting to be in demand from coffee skins is coffee skin tea or cascara. Community service was implemented from January 2023 to March 2023 at the people's coffee farmers in Mekarjaya Village, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency. The method has several stages: area surveys, product demonstration plots, socialization, and evaluation. The regional survey results show that the area has great potential to process coffee waste as cascara. Based on the results of the pre-test, showed that coffee farmers did not know about cascara and its benefits. Meanwhile, after the socialization, the farmers understood and were interested in developing cascara products as one of the commercial uses of coffee waste. Keywords: Cascara, Banjaran, coffee farmer, waste.

Abstract

Bananas are one of Indonesia’s most important horticultural crops, valued for their adaptability and economic potential. Among them, the Roid banana (ABB) (Musa spp.) stands out as a local variety native to West Java-Indonesia, particularly the Jatigede District, Sumedang Regency where it thrives naturally without agronomic inputs. Known for its resistance to pests and diseases, long shelf life, and strong fruit attachment that reduces post-harvest losses, the Roid banana remains underutilized and understudied. Despite its advantages, research on its genetic diversity is limited, highlighting the need for characterization as a foundation for conservation and breeding. This study, conducted from October to December 2023 in the Jatigede District, aimed to analyze the distribution patterns and genetic diversity of Roid bananas. Characterization used a survey method and purposive sampling in situ. Results revealed two primary clusters dominated by accessions from Ciranggem and Jemah Villages. Key traits supported clusters were peduncle curvature, bunch length and density, number of fruit hands, male flower attitude, apex shape, skin color, plant height, and the presence of hermaphrodite flowers. The genetic diversity based on Euclidean distances was 0.47 to 11.92. The Index of Cultural Significance value was 105, implying a very high level of utilization diversity. These findings highlight the genetic richness and cultural importance of Roid bananas, offering valuable insights for future conservation and breeding programs. Keywords: characterization; cluster analysis; exploration; Index Cultural Significance (ICS); Musa spp.
