Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is the ability to use the words in conducting the communication and understanding the meaning of the words or phrases in English. The purpose of the research is to Increase the Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Through Jeopardy Game at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat which the total numbers of the students was 26 persons. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. This research was applied into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation sheet, evaluation sheet and field note. From the result of each Cycle, the researcher finds that the students get an improvement in their vocabulary through Jeopardy Game. At the second meeting of cycle II the researcher obtained an increase in students, that students overall reached MCC (70).

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum assumed the integration of local wisdom into teaching materials because it contained noble values that could develop knowledge to shape students' character and increase their motivation to learn. English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Alasa still used general teaching materials and had not specifically incorporated the local wisdom of the Nias tribe. One of the Nias local wisdoms that could be integrated into English learning was folktales in the form of legends for Narrative Text material. Thus, this research aimed to produce visual book teaching materials based on local wisdom that were suitable and practical to use. This research used the Research and Development method, employing the 4D development model. The results showed that the visual book teaching materials developed by the researcher were very suitable and practical to use, as evidenced by the results of the validation and practicality questionnaires. Validation results by language experts, with an average score of 4, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 100%. Validation results by media experts, with an average score of 3.8, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 95%. Validation results by material experts, with an average score of 3.86, were in the very feasible category with a percentage of 96.66%. The results of the practicality test by teachers and students were in the very practical category, with the highest percentage being 100% and the lowest percentage being 88.66%. Based on these results, it was concluded that the development of English teaching materials based on local wisdom for the tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Alasa was feasible and practical for use in the learning process. It was recommended that teachers develop teaching materials based on local wisdom in the region for other learning content.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the process and activity of understanding all reading texts that include vocabulary and concepts, making conclusions, and connecting key ideas, in addition, readers will get ideas or meanings from written texts. One of the problems found by researchers is that students can’t understand the whole of each word. The purpose of this study is to improve students' reading comprehension using the Discovery Learning method in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Gido in the 2022/2023 academic year. Researchers use Classroom Action Research (CAR), especially Quantitative Methods as a research method. There are two cycles, each cycle consists of two meetings. Each meeting consist of planning, action, observation and reflection. Data were collected by researchers from observation results, field notes and evaluation papers. From the results of the study in each cycle, it has been shown that students have improved by using the Discovery Learning Method. In Cycle I students failed, the average student score was 46.8. In Cycle II all students successfully passed the Minimum Competency Criteria. The average students score was 88.6. The researchers concluded that the best way to improve students' Reading comprehension is to use the Discovery Learning Method. Therefore, the researchers has several recommendations such as the researchers recommends students and teachers to use the Discovery Learning method to improve their reading comprehension, finally the researchers recommends all readers especially to the next researchers to explore Reading comprehension that has not been explored by the researchers in this study. ABSTRAKPemahaman membaca adalah proses dan aktivitas untuk memahami semua teks bacaan yang mencakup kosa kata dan konsep, membuat kesimpulan, dan menghubungkan ide-ide kunci, di samping itu pembaca akan mendapatkan ide atau makna dari teks tertulis. Salah satu masalah yang ditemukan peneliti adalah siswa tidak dapat memahami keseluruhan setiap kata. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperbaiki pemahaman membaca siswa dengan menggunakan metode Discovery Learning di kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Gido tahun 2022/2023. Peneliti menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) khususnya metode kuantitatif sebagai metode penelitian. Ada dua siklus yang siklusnya terdiri dari dua pertemuan. Setiap pertemuan terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, observasi dan refleksi. Data dikumpulkan oleh peneliti dari hasil observasi, catatan lapangan dan lembar evaluasi. Dari hasil penelitian di setiap siklus, telah ditunjukkan bahwa siswa mendapatkan peningkatan dengan menggunakan Metode Discovery Learning. Pada Siklus I siswa gagal, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 46, 8. Pada Siklus II semua siswa berhasil melewati Kriteria Kompetensi Minimal. Nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 88,6. Para peneliti menyimpulkan cara terbaik untuk memperbaiki pemahaman membaca siswa adalah menggunakan Metode Discovery Learning. Oleh karena itu, peneliti memiliki beberapa rekomendasi seperti peneliti merekomendasikan siswa dan guru menggunakan metode Discovery Learning untuk memperbaiki pemahaman membaca mereka, akhirnya peneliti merekomendasikan semua pembaca terutama kepada peneliti berikutnya untuk mengeksplorasi pemahaman membaca yang belum dieksplorasi oleh peneliti dalam penelitian ini.

Abstract

Writing is the ability to communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings to others through written language. Writing as a process that involves and teaches how to turn words, sentences, and paragraphs into good writing, as well as how to generate ideas and ways to interact with others, identify what they want to express, and try to understand it. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that writing is a process in which words and ideas are turned into phrases and paragraphs that are used to communicate with others and can speak and receive messages from the author through writing. The purpose of the research is to Increase the Students' Ability in Writing  Descriptive Text Through Visual Spatial Intelligence Strategy at Tenth Grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Barat which the total numbers of the students was 20 persons. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. This research was applied into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments used by the researchers to collect the data were observation sheet, evaluation sheet and field note. In the second meeting of cycle II, the researchers obtained the improvement of students, who achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (73). there were 11 (55%) students who got score among 85-100 classified as “Very Good Criteria”, 8 (40%) students got score among 75-84 classified as “Good Criteria”, 1 (4%) students  who got score among 60-74 classified as “Enough Criteria”,  no one  students who reached the “Less Criteria” and no one students who reached the “Very Less Criteria”. In Cycle II the average was 84, the highest mark was 96 and the lowest was 65. It implies that the students’ ability in write descriptive text increase in cycle II. ABSTRAKMenulis adalah kemampuan untuk mengkomunikasikan ide, pikiran, dan perasaan kepada orang lain melalui bahasa tulis. Menulis sebagai suatu proses yang melibatkan dan mengajarkan bagaimana mengubah kata, kalimat, dan paragraf menjadi tulisan yang baik, serta bagaimana menghasilkan ide dan cara berinteraksi dengan orang lain, mengidentifikasi apa yang ingin mereka ungkapkan, dan mencoba memahaminya. Berdasarkan penjelasan di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa menulis adalah suatu proses di mana kata-kata dan ide diubah menjadi frasa dan paragraf yang digunakan untuk berkomunikasi dengan orang lain dan dapat berbicara dan menerima pesan dari penulis melalui tulisan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Siswa dalam Menulis Teks Deskriptif Melalui Strategi Kecerdasan Visual Spasial di Kelas X SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Barat yang jumlah siswanya adalah 20 orang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan desain Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini diterapkan dalam dua siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Instrumen yang digunakan oleh peneliti untuk mengumpulkan data adalah lembar observasi, lembar evaluasi dan catatan lapangan. Pada pertemuan kedua siklus II, peneliti memperoleh peningkatan siswa yang mencapai Kriteria Kompetensi Minimal (KKM) (73). Ada 11 (55%) siswa yang memperoleh nilai 85-100 yang tergolong “Kriteria Sangat Baik”, 8 (40%) siswa memperoleh nilai 75-84 yang tergolong “Kriteria Baik”, 1 (4%) siswa memperoleh nilai 60-74 yang tergolong “Kriteria Cukup”, tidak ada siswa yang mencapai “Kriteria Kurang” dan tidak ada siswa yang mencapai “Kriteria Sangat Kurang”. Pada Siklus II rata-ratanya adalah 84, nilai tertinggi adalah 96 dan terendah adalah 65. Ini menyiratkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskripsi meningkat pada siklus II.

Abstract

Meminta dan memberi saran merupakan materi yang mengandung ungkapan tentang ekspresi meminta, memberi dan menanggapi saran dan respon menerima atau menolak ssaran. Materi ini erat kaitannya dengan kemampuan berbicara, Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Fokus penelitiannya adalah tanggapan yang diberikan siswa di dalam percakapan meminta dam memberi saran. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan tanggapan yang digunakan siswa dalam materi meminta dan memberi saran serta mengelompokkan faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi siswa ketika memilih tanggapan yang diberikan dalam percakapan meminta dan memberi saran. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dari respon tertulis siswa dan wawancara peneliti menemukan bahwa setiap siswa mempunyai jawaban yang berbeda-beda dan memiliki alasannya masing-masing. Peneliti menemukan bahwa siswa tersebut mempunyai faktor-faktor yang menghambat mereka dalam menentukan jawaban mereka sehingga peneliti menggunakan pengelompokan yang terdapat di dalam jurnal handayani.  Sehingga 15 siswa tersebut dapat dikelompokkan menjadi tujuh kelompok, yaitu 3 siswa yang tidak percaya diri, 1 siswa yang tidak memiliki motivasi pribadi, 2 siswa yang takut salah, 3 siswa yang takut diejek. /terintimidasi, 1 orang siswa yang lingkungannya tidak mendukung, 4 orang siswa yang pendidiknya tidak kompeten, 1 orang siswa yang tidak sesuai fasilitas.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe the learning process in the Paket B education program and the differences between Junior High School and the Paket B education program. This research was conducted at PKBMs that implement the Paket B Program in Gunungsitoli City, consisting of PKBM Ziona, PKBM Pelita Bangsa, PKBM Kreasi, and PKBM Perjuangan. The research method used was a qualitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the learning process in Paket B consists of 3 types, namely, Independent, Tutorial, and Face-to-Face, and there are differences in the learning process between SMP and Paket B in Gunungsitoli city, such as the characteristics of students, facilities and resources, learning schedules, teaching methods, and examinations carried out. In addition, there are also similarities between these two institutions, such as the curriculum used, which is the national curriculum, and the diploma issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which means that Paket B is recognized and has the exact legality of junior high school. The learning process in junior high school tends to be more structured and formal, while in Paket B, it is more flexible and individualized to suit the students. Efforts are needed to integrate the advantages of each learning system to create a more effective learning environment for all learners in each education unit.

Abstract

Personality competence is one of the teacher competencies that is very important in the success of the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study is to determine the personality competence of teachers in utilizing industry 4.0 technology in the learning process. The method used in this research was qualitative analysis. The instruments used are observations, interview and questionnaire.  After analyzing the teacher's personality competence through observation and interview, the researcher found that the four English teachers had personality competence indicators, namely, presenting themselves as a person who has a good personality stable, mature, wise, and authoritative, showing work ethic, high responsibility, a sense of pride in being a teacher, and self-confidence and upholding the ethical code of the teaching profession. Both English teachers who have been observed use technology when teaching in the classroom. Although English teachers have obstacles in using technology, they are able to deal with them. Abstract

This research aims to find out the effect of Wisata Alam Indonesia application on user experience using Usability Testing and the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) method. The study focuses on 6th semester students of class A from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Nias. Data were collected using a questionnaire that measures six scale: attractiveness, efficiency, perspicuity, dependability, stimulation, and novelty and five components of usability testing: learnability, efficiency, memorability, errors, satisfaction. The research findings show that the Wisata Alam Indonesia application has a positive effect on user experience, with the highest scores in attractiveness (mean score = 4.73) and novelty (mean score = 10.15). However, areas such as efficiency (mean score = 3.65) and perspicuity (mean score = 3.19) present opportunities for improvement. The overall average score for user experience was 46.42, while the usability testing of the application revealed a mean score of 45.00. The correlation coefficient (r = 0.896) indicates a very strong positive relationship between the usability of the application (Wisata Alam Indonesia) and user experience. The hypothesis testing results support this conclusion, with the t-test showing thitung = 9.911 > ttabel = 2.063 and the F-test indicating Fhitung = 98.228 > Ftabel = 4.259, both of which confirm the rejection of H0 and acceptance of Ha. These results suggest that the Wisata Alam Indonesia application can enhance user satisfaction, but adjustments in certain usability components could further improve the experience.

Abstract

One of the components of speaking is pronunciation. The ability to speak is a key that someone could use the language successfully. Pronunciation is also one of the subjects in the English curriculum, especially in the English Education Study Programme Universitas Nias. However, the students still found pronouns inaccurately. The students are unable to pronounce words that have the same form in writing and do not care about how to pronounce the words accurately. They also do not know how important the accuracy of pronunciation in English is. To conduct the research, the researcher used a descriptive quantitative method by collected by giving the test to the students the using statistical method. In collecting the data researcher prepared some tongue-twister phrases to pronounce. The researcher asks the students to pronounce the phrases one by one and then record them with the recorder. the researcher concluded that most of the students in the second semester of the English Education Study Programme academic year 2023/2024 Universitas Nias are unable to pronounce tongue-twister phrases accurately. They didn’t care about pronunciation, tended to speak in a hurry, and hesitated to speak as if they were scared to make mistakes.

Abstract

This study aims to develop culture-based English learning in the 9th-grade students of UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli Alo'oa by using a research amd development method. The development process is based on the Borg and Gall development research model, simplified into three stages: a) Preliminary Study, b) Product Development, and c) Finalization and testing of the product that integrates local cultural aspects. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires for developing teaching materials to measure the effectiveness of the learning process. The results indicate that the integration of local cultural elements in English learning is enhances student motivation, enriches their understanding of language and culture, recognize the significance of cultural context in their language acquisition and develops a framework integrating local cultural elements into English language that connected to the local cultural contexts lesson that affected their understanding and application of the language. This research recommends applying similar methods in other schools to enhance contextual and relevant English learning.
