Abstract

Abstract

Speaking abilities are crucial language skills that must be consistently and thoroughly developed to increase a student's language proficiency. This study used a classroom action research design involving two cycles of learning activities; the BARA learning approach was carried out to improve students' speaking abilities. The four learning phases of the BARA approach, consisting of brainstorming, activating, reinforcing, and applying, were developed by Indonesian educators. The final BARA learning method design was created through this BARA approach trial in an EFL classroom. Data was gathered using a questionnaire, pretests, and posttests. The student's speaking skills significantly improved in the first and second learning cycles compared to the pretest result. Consequently, the BARA approach successfully improves students' English speaking skills

Abstract

Currently, English teaching and learning in vocational high schools increasingly incorporates 4C skills—critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity—into the teaching and learning process. The study aims to outline the development of English supplementary materials for eleventh-grade tourism service business students at a state vocational school in Bali, and assess the quality of these materials. Conducted as Design and Development (D&D) research, the study follows the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation) model. Utilizing various instruments such as observation sheets, interview guides, syllabus analysis matrices, supplementary material blueprints, resource sheets, and judgment rubrics, the research identified a seven-step development process: (1) material identification; (2) activity identification for 4C skills reinforcement; (3) element and picture sourcing; (4) Activity integration with Engaging Platforms; (5) combination of materials, activities, and elements into book content; (6) book cover design; and (7) layout finalization. The developed product was rated as "excellent" by two experts, and both teachers and students found the supplementary materials effective in enhancing 4C skills. The findings imply that well-structured supplementary materials can foster essential 21st-century skills among students. Moreover, this study shows that the incorporation of 4C skills into English supplementary materials potentially enhances not only students' language proficiency but also critical thinking abilities.

Abstract

The advancement of information and communication technology has profoundly altered educational models. The engagement between teachers and learners is no longer limited to traditional classrooms but expands to various online platforms. A qualitative method utilizing a descriptive-analytical approach has been implemented in this study. Information was gathered through detailed interviews with teachers, observations within academic environments, and reviews of existing literature. The analysis reveals trends in how teachers are adapting to technological advancements. The findings indicate that digitalization has redefined the role of teachers as the leading providers of knowledge, reducing their authority from students' perspective. While technology enhances accessibility to learning resources, it also brings ethical challenges, including a rise in consumer-oriented attitudes and a preference for instant gratification. Teachers must effectively integrate technology into their teaching, devise innovative strategies, and reconcile technological progress with character education to stay relevant. Therefore, transformations in education can serve as opportunities to enrich the overall quality of learning.
