Abstract

This article explores one of the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) teachings self-islah that develops in its dawah practices. Self-Islah emphasizes improving oneself through a proselytization program called khuruj from one community to another, from one mosque to another. All this time, dawah was used as a medium to improve and correct others by Muslim priest (da’i) without being directly involved in the practice of islah. The phenomenon of JT dawah shows a different approach and pattern where da’i play dual roles not only as subject (preachers) but also as an object (listeners) during that khuruj program. Self-islah in this context includes strengthening faith, morals, and gender awareness. The gender aspect is strong external critics of JT religious tradition where it does not involve women in their religious activities and even avoids interacting with them. Thus, TJ members must handle all the needs while staying in the mosque for religious camps, such as washing clothes, cooking, washing dishes, and serving guests from the local and international community. The article will investigate changes in gender relations within the JT family in the post-khuruj program. This article also focuses on the economic challenges faced by Tablighi members when they go out of preaching (khuruj), especially those from the lower-middle class. They struggle to fulfill the needs during dawah and the family's needs who left at home, especially for long periods such as 40 days, three months, and one year.

Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat's (TJ) proselytizing activity has had a significant impact on improving the religious practices of the community not only in India, where TJ was born and evolved, but also in other nations where they preach, including Indonesia. TJ's da'wah has reached rural places with strong customs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the growth and influence of TJ's da'wah movement in the Wetu Telu Bayan indigenous community in North Lombok. This study employs qualitative data collection approaches such as participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. According to the findings of this study, the beginning of TJ's da'wah expansion began with the movement of young people from the hamlet who were still in high school to Jamaah Tabligh's da'wah. He was successful in enticing the community to join by presenting various programs such as Safari Friday (Safari Jumat), a three-day church for spiritual growth. This program was strengthened by the Lombok Uatara Regent's program, namely emotional treatment (Termos) through khuruj, particularly Haji Bakrie, who is also a Tablighi Jamaat figure. This approach is highly effective and has a significant impact on the religious reformation in the Bayan customary region. Another study indicates that TJ members have successfully negotiated their teachings with traditional practices. The society began to renounce traditional practices that were seen incompatible with Islamic teachings.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the practice of the nede rite among the Sasak people of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The Nede ritual is an everyday activity that combines diverse customary traditions, cultures, and Islamic beliefs to pray to God for rain in a kemaliq or sacred spot. Commonly, Muslims recount istisqo prayers to request rain, but in this Sasak Islamic community, they have invented a unique tradition known as the Nede ritual. The extended drought that resulted in crop failure of the community's agricultural products pushed the community to undertake the Nede ceremony. The complexities of Nede ritual practice inspire inquiry into the ritual's history, stages, symbolic meaning, and community engagement. This study employs a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach. The data was gathered through observation and in-depth interviews with traditional authorities, religious leaders, and members of local communities. The findings revealed that the nede ritual was first done in the 1970s when the community suffered from a lengthy drought and could not harvest. This extended drought stumped the community until one of the indigenous elders had a dream and received directions from supernatural creatures to execute a rite on a sacred rock on Mount Sulung. The Nede ritual is not only intricate in execution but also rich in meaning at each level. The rite is accompanied by traditional gendang beleq music. Other data indicate that community participation in this ritual is robust, and they have open access to some stages.

Abstract

The article aims to map the socio-entrepreneurship potential of migrant workers in the Covid-19 era. This mapping is vital to identify the potential that migrant workers have since they seek diversification during the pandemic years. In particular, this paper attempts to investigate the potential of this community as a socio-entrepreneurship resource for migrant workers as it has been seen essential an alternative approach to mitigating the effects of Covid-19. This study focuses on the Suralaga district, an area in East Lombok, which is known for a high number of migrant workers. This study is based on a qualitative approach and phenomenological methodology to gather and analyze data for six months (January–June 2022). There are 25 informants total in this study, 15 of whom are men and 10 of them are women. We used a variety of techniques to gather the data, including participant observation, in-depth interviews, focus groups, and documentation. The results of the study demonstrate that because of their low educational attainment—the majority of migrant employees having only completed elementary or junior high school—migrant workers have limited knowledge and skill, therefore it is difficult to find a job when they finished the contract and back home. In terms of natural potential, the Suralaga region's terrain is part of a farming area, where the majority of people work as farmers and grow tomatoes and chilies. The finding of this research also demonstrates the critical role that micro, small, and medium-sized businesses play in fostering the economic growth of migrant workers and serving as a counterweight to Covid-19's hegemonic middle class.

Abstract

Abstract

The adoption of debates between presidential and vice presidential candidates is one of several campaigns for Indonesia's 2024 Presidential Election. This discussion is intended not only to introduce the candidate's thoughts and ideals, but also to demonstrate each candidate's ability to identify and solve societal problems. The candidates continue to make every effort to attend every invitation, both from the KPU and from other sources, such as campus debates or dialogues, religious organizations, national television, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). What is intriguing is Gibran's work, which has received a lot of criticism from netizens, both supporters and opponents. In fact, many insinuations were made against Gibran on various social media platforms, prompting the use of the terms Samsul, belimbing sayur, plonga-plongo, and others. This essay seeks to comprehend Gibran's debate technique and style on the stage of the 2024 presidential election. The results revealed Gibran's practice of declining debate invitations outside of the KPU in order to keep his thoughts and views hidden from his political opponents. Gibran did admirably in the KPU debate, outperforming his debate opponent, who was expected to be brutally bullied by his more senior and experienced debate opponent. The abrasive debating style while being polite and the tricks used drew the attention of netizens on social media. This gimmick subsequently became viral on numerous social media platforms, and he was even referred to as a “suhu” rather than a “cupu”. This is a qualitative study conducted utilizing a desk study approach, which entails collecting and processing data from available sources such as websites and YouTube videos relating to the research's themes and issues.

Abstract

The 2024 presidential election (Pilpres) contains distinct characteristics that differ from past presidential elections. The 2024 presidential election contest is very complex and unique due to the changing composition of the coalition of political parties supporting the presidential and vice presidential candidates, including President Jokowi's shifting support, which is no longer aligned with his party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). This article will look at the political events that unfolded during the 2014 presidential election, such as Anies Baswedan's refusal to run as a presidential candidate, Jokowi's feud with the PDIP, and neutrality or interference during the election. This research employs qualitative approaches using data collection procedures through the desch study, incorporating media. The findings revealed that Jokowi intervened politically by backing the 02 group in order to assure the continuance of the previously implemented development strategy. There are hints of substantial participation by Jokowi in the process of deciding presidential candidates by supporting parties, such as the nomination of Anies Baswedan. Other data indicate that Jokowi and his family's political moves in the 2024 presidential race contradict the PDIP, culminating in open conflict between the PDIP elite and Jokowi. The appointment of Gibran as Prabowo's vice presidential candidate following the Constitutional Court's decision has sparked debate in the community and led to charges of Jokowi's lack of impartiality in this presidential race. Meanwhile, international media outlets such as Al Jazeera covered the presidential election and reported that Gibran met public expectations.

Abstract

Religious moderation is an issue that always arises, especially after the reformation and the collapse of the WTC 9/11 in the United States and 2002 Bali Bombing. The Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia made religious moderation a flagship program out of 7 existing programs. The research entitled Religious Moderation among Campus Da'wah Activists in Mataram-West Nusa Tenggara, seeks to explore the views of religious moderation among students, especially Campus Da'wah Activists. Campus Da'wah activists (ADK) became objects of research because ADK carried out an important preaching task. If Campus Da’wah Activists have problems in understanding their religion, the contents of their da'wah and objects of da'wah automatically contain intolerance content that can endanger security. Conversely, if the religious moderation views of the ADK are tolerant, then the content of their da'wah will be calming and constructive. This research uses a qualitative method with phenomenological approach, data obtained by observing and interviewing campus da'wah activist at 6 universities in Mataram City who are members of the Nusa Tenggara Campus Da'wah Institution Gathering Forum (FSLDK) then enriched by a documentation study. From this research it was found that Form of moderation campus da’wah activists is tolerance towards people of other religions by respecting differences in beliefs and understandings, learning and doing assignments together, gathering and organizing regardless of religious, ethnicity and class background. Some activists do not agree with some doctrines different from what they believe in, such as Shia and Ahmadiyya, even so they reject violent ways of responding to these understandings.
