Abstract

Tablighi Jamaat's (TJ) proselytizing activity has had a significant impact on improving the religious practices of the community not only in India, where TJ was born and evolved, but also in other nations where they preach, including Indonesia. TJ's da'wah has reached rural places with strong customs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the growth and influence of TJ's da'wah movement in the Wetu Telu Bayan indigenous community in North Lombok. This study employs qualitative data collection approaches such as participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. According to the findings of this study, the beginning of TJ's da'wah expansion began with the movement of young people from the hamlet who were still in high school to Jamaah Tabligh's da'wah. He was successful in enticing the community to join by presenting various programs such as Safari Friday (Safari Jumat), a three-day church for spiritual growth. This program was strengthened by the Lombok Uatara Regent's program, namely emotional treatment (Termos) through khuruj, particularly Haji Bakrie, who is also a Tablighi Jamaat figure. This approach is highly effective and has a significant impact on the religious reformation in the Bayan customary region. Another study indicates that TJ members have successfully negotiated their teachings with traditional practices. The society began to renounce traditional practices that were seen incompatible with Islamic teachings.

Abstract

Migrant workers’ lives are filled with drama and social difficulties ranging from enslavement, new cultural obstacles, and social disputes in the places where they work. This article looks at the cultural obstacles that Sasak migrant workers experience in Malaysia, as well as the patterns of slavery that emerge in the workplace. This study was conducted in Suaralaga utilizing qualitative methods and a case study approach. According to the findings, the majority of Indonesian migrant workers face slavery, exploitation, and discrimination in the workplace. They frequently do not receive their salary because the brokers who brought them to the company subtracted and took them. These brokers charge a high fee, resulting in migrant laborers receiving inadequate or no pay at all. Slavery occurs not just in Malaysian enterprises, but it is even more heinous in Indonesian territory when migrant laborers arrive by sea. Although cultural concerns do not pose a problem for migrant employees due to many parallels with Malaysian society, other habits such as consuming beer, free sex, and prostitution in the community surrounding the company make foreign workers uncomfortable. Failure of migrant workers in Malaysia to provide remittances to their families has a significant influence on their family life at home, particularly in meeting the daily necessities of their wives and children

Abstract

The sembeq senggeteng is a unique rite that bind young people's hearts so that they do not marry too early. The ritual was established by the native ancestor of East Lombok people, especially those in Lekor village. The ritual is complicated in terms of the symbolic value of the offerings material. As a result, this study looks into the process of performing ritual, the symbolic meanings of the presenting element, and the influence on preventing early marriage. The study adopted a qualitative method and a phenomenological approach. The research revealed that each procedure of the ceremony and its offering has a symbolic value, such as betel leaves as a substitute for skin, areca nut for the heart, lime for bones, rice for meat, and thread for veins. This ritual has a significant impact on avoiding early marriage in this hamlet, and the government should implement the ritual to lower the number of early marriages in Lombok.

Abstract

Konflik antara anggota Wahabi dengan masyarakat lokal telah lama terjadi sejak kehadiran Wahabi 1990an di Lombok. Konflik antara keduanya muncul karena perbedaan penafsiran teks kitab suci terkait praktek ibadah dan posisi ritual yang bersumber dari non kitab suci, yang berdampak pada ketergangguan relasi sosial di antara mereka. Akibatnya, segragasi, konflik dan kekerasan sosial seringkali terjadi ketika keduanya memaksakan pemahaman dan penafsiran masing-masing untuk dipraktikkan oleh kelompok di luar mereka. Artikel ini membahas tentang konflik antara Wahabi dengan masyarakat lokal di Lombok Timur yang disertai aksi kekerasan berupa pembakaran masjid dan markas Wahabi. Secara spesifik penelitian ini betujuan untuk memahami awal mula konflik, eskalasi konflik dan aktor-aktor yang terlibat pada konflik tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan selama 4 bulan (April-Agustus 2023) dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, konflik berawal dari pembangunan masjid Wahabi di desa Mamben Daya yang kurang sosialisasi sehingga mengalami penolakan dan resistensi. Karena kedua kubu tidak menemukan kesepakatan terkait keberlanjutan izin pembangunan masjid As-Syafi’i, maka masyarakat desa Mamben Daya terutama dari unsur tokoh-tokoh agama melakukan aksi damai ke lokasi pembangunan masjid Wahabi dan kantor kepala desa. Aksi ini tidak menimbulkan kekerasan, namun di tengah negosiasi penghentian pembangunan masjid As-Syafi’i, konflik mengalami eskalasi pasca tersebar potongan video berisi ceramah oleh tokoh Wahabi yang menghina makam suci para wali di Lombok. Eskalasi konflik muncuat ketika aksi senyap dengan membakar bangunan masjid As-Syafi’i dan juga markaz As-Sunnah. Temuan lain adalah keterlibatan tokoh agama dan elit-elit sosial lainnya dalam pusaran konflik Wahabi di wilayah ini. Rekonsiliasi yang dimediasi oleh pemerintah daerah berhasil meredam konflik dengan cara membuat perjanjian damai dan membeli tanah masjid Wahabi yang dibakar.

Abstract

The paper explores the phenomena of conflicting religious identities among Indonesian politicians in Jakarta’s regional election (pilkada) in 2017. The 2017 most dramatized Jakarta regional election has been seen as a very important political phenomenon in recent time as it revealed the conflicting social-political identity construction across religious and ethnic groups in the region. This work attempts to provide explanation from the perspective of religious studies on the roles of religious identities in the political realm as well as religious and political symbols as tools to achieve political supports. The case of Ahok mentioning one of the Quranic verses of al-Maidah 51 in Kepulauan Seribu exposes the fundamental question of wheter it is apart of blaspheming Islam and insulting ulama. It also shows how the Islamist groups respond to it by using the case of the politicizing al-Maidah 51 to reduce Ahok electability and disqualify him from political contestation by accusing him to blaspheme Islam. The complexity of applying Quranic texts to the modern political platform brings this article to outline how Muslim scholars interpret all-Maidah 51 and how they situate the text into the context of modern politics in Indonesia as well as how it influences the future of Indonesian democracy.

Abstract

Wahabisme merupakan salah satu varian Islam yang ultra konservatif lahir di Saudi Arabia pada abad ke-18 kemudian menyebar sebagai gerakan ideologis transnasional yang mengkampanyekan suara pemurnian Islam, pemberlakuan syariat Islam dan pendirian khilafah Islamiyah. Gerakan ini menimbulkan kontroversi di masyarakat karena selain menentang praktik budaya dan tradisi lokal yang berkembang di masyarakat, para ulama dan jemaah Wahhabi juga dikenal keras dan tanpa kompromi dalam dakwahnya. Sebagian besar ulama Wahhabi menggunakan hard approach dalam praktik dakwahnya menyerang dan menantang secara terbuka kelompok yang diklaim syirik, sesat dan ahli bidah karena tidak mengikuti “sunnah” Rasulullah. Akibatnya, ajaran Wahabi seringkali mengalami penolakan, benturan dan konflik sosial dengan penduduk lokal. Artikel ini ini secara khusus bertujuan untuk menguji upaya de-radikalisasi Islam (melepaskan Islam dari tindakan radikal), dan upaya mengubah pendekatan dakwah yang keras dan radikal menjadi lembut dan moderat supaya diterima oleh masyarakat. Selain itu artikel ini mengeksplorasi perkembangan diskursus khilafah Islamiyah di komunitas Wahhabi karena selama ini ajaran Wahhabi menekankan pemberlakuan syariat Islam dan pendirian negara Islam. Dalam merespon fenomena ini bagaimana upaya pemerintah dalam mengintervensi dan menanamkan ideologi Pancasila dan wawasan kebangsaan di komunitas pendidikan mereka.

Abstract

The phenomenon of migrant workers from Indonesia leads to numerous internal issues in the family. Parents who play a significant role in the family are unable to perform their duties to their full potential, particularly when it comes to supporting the growth of children in their health and education. Children who have their migrant worker parents abandon them frequently face a variety of disadvantages, such as poor health and educational opportunities. Children's education will undoubtedly be impacted, particularly in light of the Covid-19 epidemic, which has an effect on educational institutions. Their health is also in danger. Due to this circumstance, this article focuses on the education and health of migrant worker children as well as how they develop academically. This study was carried out over the course of six months (January–June 2022) In Suralaga, East Lombok utilizing qualitative techniques and a phenomenological perspective. Ways for gathering data by observations-participation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The study included a sample of 30 respondents, including migrant workers, those who looked after their children, teachers, healthcare professionals, and local government. According to the findings of this study, migrant workers' children in Suralaga District generally lead happy lives. Children of migrant workers have good physical and educational outcomes, but they struggle with mental health issues. Therefore, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, parents' attendance is crucial for their children's education and health.

Abstract

AbstractThis article is examining the practice of mono-religious teaching in public school and its influence on students' religious life which tends to mire on exclusive practice in East Lombok. The practice of mono-religious teaching in public schools not merely embark compulsion and religious exclusivity but also create discrimination towards other students for the tendency of applying only one religious practice at school. The impact of the religious praxis in public schools is the force and confinement on the students. Simultaneously, the government keeps producing sharia-based laws that stand for majority notwithstanding the laws fully beneficial for the majority group. Yet the disadvantages for minorities from the laws are obvious. The method used for this research is a qualitative method, the data are collected by interviewing some students from junior public school in East Lombok. There are 10 informants from 4 public schools at the central city of East Lombok, students interviewed are from different gender and religious backgrounds and questioned about their religious experiences at schools. This article comes up with the argument that religious education policy in Indonesia focuses on mono religious study with a vision to build students good morality through religion, however the result of this system is creating the tendency of exclusivity among majority students and restriction for minority students in public school. Mono-religious study and its practice at public schools somehow exceeds religious practice in religious schools and this creates school rules that force students to implement religious activity which is irrelevant with the principal of the public school. And generally, the facility for religious activities only accommodates students who are affiliated with majority belief. The problems that the mono-religious system causes discrimination towards minorities regarding the right for religious activities at public school. The conclusion will be served together with the critique towards the impact of mono-religious teaching in Public School. Keyword: Discrimination, mono-religious teaching, Islamization, public school, East Lombok AbstrakArtikel ini mengkaji praktik pengajaran mono-religious di sekolah umum dan pengaruhnya terhadap kehidupan beragama siswa yang cenderung eksklusif di Lombok Timur. Praktik pengajaran mono-agama di sekolah umum tidak hanya menimbulkan pemaksaan dan eksklusivitas agama, tetapi juga menimbulkan diskriminasi terhadap siswa lain karena adanya kecenderungan hanya menerapkan satu praktik agama di sekolah. Dampak dari praktek keagamaan di sekolah umum adalah timbulnya pemaksaan dan pembatasan terhadap siswa. Bersamaan dengan itu, pemerintah terus memproduksi undang-undang berbasis syariah yang berpihak pada mayoritas meskipun undang-undang tersebut sepenuhnya bermanfaat bagi kelompok mayoritas. Namun kerugian bagi minoritas dari sisi hukum sudah jelas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif, data dikumpulkan dengan cara mewawancarai beberapa siswa SMP Negeri di Lombok Timur. Dalam penelitian ini  wawancara dilakukan pada 10 orang informan dari 4 sekolah negeri di pusat kota Lombok Timur, siswa yang diwawancarai berasal dari latar belakang gender dan agama yang berbeda dan ditanyai tentang pengalaman keagamaan mereka di sekolah. Pembahasan dalam artikel ini antara lain: Kebijakan pendidikan agama di Indonesia yang menitikberatkan pada studi mono-religius dengan visi membangun akhlak siswa yang baik melalui praktek keagamaan menimbulkan kecenderungan eksklusivitas di kalangan siswa mayoritas dan pembatasan terhadap siswa minoritas di sekolah negeri. Pembelajaran mono-religious dan praktiknya di sekolah negeri melampaui praktik keagamaan di sekolah agama, dan ini menciptakan peraturan sekolah yang memaksa siswa untuk melaksanakan aktivitas keagamaan yang tidak relevan dengan prinsip sekolah negeri. Dan umumnya fasilitas yang disediakan untuk kegiatan keagamaan hanya menampung siswa yang berafiliasi dengan keyakinan mayoritas. Permasalahan bahwa sistem mono-religius menyebabkan diskriminasi terhadap minoritas mengenai hak kegiatan keagamaan di sekolah umum. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to outline the opinions of women of Jamaah Tabligh members regarding their husbands' khuruj activities, the effects of khuruj on the family, and the ways they cope while participating in khuruj. According to the study's findings, Tablighi Jamaat women primarily view their husbands' khuruj da'wah efforts as a means of engaging in jihad in Allah's cause, developing spiritually, and fortifying links with other Muslims around the world. Additionally, the results of this study indicate that khuruj activities have both positive and negative effects on families, leading wives to employ survival strategies like turning to Allah (tawakal), managing the assets left by their husbands, fortifying bonds with other Tablighi Jamaat wives, forging ties with the local community, and taking over their husband's responsibilities. A qualitative research method with a phenomenological perspective was used in this study. Using the snowball sampling technique, informants were located in the East Lombok village of Suralaga. In-depth interviews, documentation, and observation were employed as the data collection methods. Data gathering, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drafting are some of the data analysis approaches employed in this study. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tentang pandangan istri anggota Jamaah Tabligh terhadap aktivitas khuruj suaminya, dampak khuruj terhadap keluarga dan strategi survive mereka selama ditinggal khuruj. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa istri-istri Jamaah Tabligh sebagian besar melihatnya aktivitas khuruj dakwah suaminya sebagai sarana dakwah dan jihad di jalan Allah, sarana dakwah untuk meperbaiki diri sendiri dan sarana mempererat tali silaturahmi kepada sesama Muslim di berbagai tempat. Selain itu, temuan riset ini menunjukkan adanya dampak positif dan negatif aktivitas khuruj terhadap keluarga sehingga istri menggunakan strategi untuk survide seperti berserah diri kepada Allah (tawakal), mengelola bekal (uang dan barang) yang ditinggalkan oleh suami, memperkuat relasi dengan istri anggota Jamaah Tabligh, menjalin hubungan dengan masyarakat dan bekerja. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Penentuan informan menggunakan teknik Snowball Sampling di desa Suralaga Lombok Timur. Adapun teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, wawancara mendalam dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi data, peyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Kata Kunci: Jamaah Tabligh, keluarga, khuruj, strategi, survive, Suralaga.
