Abstract

Abstract

Mindfulness practice is being promoted in Western countries as a means to improve one’s ability to restrain aggression under the “depleted” condition. The applicability of this framework in non-Western settings is yet to be determined. This study (N = 119 Indonesian undergraduates) directly replicated Yusainy and Lawrence (2015) experiment with native British sample, to examine the moderation of mindfulness induction on post-depletion aggression (i.e., blast intensity in an adapted competitive reaction-time task). Similar results were obtained, in that mindfulness induction moderated the ego-depletion and (i) blast intensity link under low/moderate provocation, and (ii) self-control performance link after the aggression task. Notably, the benefit of mindfulness was also indicated in our additional aggression measure of the late deliverance of maximum blast in depleted females. While Western operationalization of mindfulness operates quite similar across cultures, the inclusion of a subtle measure of aggression appears to be crucial for Indonesian females.

Abstract

Abstract

The usage of technologically based utilities has been increasing rapidly in our daily life. This phenomenon breeds two fundamental changes: Data explosion and social structures. It takes a different approach to gain insights and benefits from the phenomenon. In psychological science, the acquaintance of alternative methods to keep up with the problems should be a necessity. This article introduces two social media data analytical techniques, namely (i) sentiment analysis as the process of computationally identifying, extracting, and quantifying the effective condition towards a particular target, and (ii) social network analysis (SNA) as the process of investigating social structures through the use of Graph Theory dan Network Science. Overviews are presented in general terms with the expectation to bring the quality of research in Psychology to the next level.

Abstract

Abstract

Physical presence is crucial in almost every social event in Indonesia, but could potentially inhibit obedience to physical distance protocol during COVID-19 pandemic. This study (N = 114 undegraduates, 62,3% female; M age = 21,69; SD = 2,19) explored the extent to which adherence of physical distance could be predicted by three social-cognitive factors from the Theory of Planned Behaviour (i.e., attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control), autonomy motivation from the Self-Determination Theory, and past adherence behaviour. We found that 68.02% of the variance in intention to perform physical distancing in the future was predicted by autonomy motivation, attitude, and perceived behavioural control explained. Moreover, after accounting autonomy motivation the role of subjective norm and past adherence behavior were no longer significant. It is therefore timely to shift focus from merely reporting past adherence behaviour to promoting an individual’s autonomy motivation.

Abstract

Being exceedingly social creatures, each and every decision that an individual human makes carries with it consequences and risks that may endanger not only themselves (intrapersonal harm), but also others (interpersonal harm). This experiment (N = 215 undergraduates; 63.36% female; Mage = 21.86, SD = 2.56) compared the impact of contextual harm on emotions of regret and guilt, and examined whether the role of a trait-relevant predictor in the form of mindfulness on regret/guilt could be explained by tendency of being under-engaged (trait alexithymia) and over-engaged (trait rumination) of affective experiences. In line with our predictions, (i) interpersonal harm aroused more guilt than intrapersonal harm, but the levels of regret between the two contexts were not unalike; (ii) mindfulness negatively correlated with alexithymia, rumination, regret, and guilt; and (iii) after controlling for type of harm, the relation between mindfulness and regret/guilt was mediated by alexithymia and rumination. Although guilt depends heavily on interpersonal context while regret is induced more globally, mindfulness inversely predicts the levels of both emotions through alexithymia and rumination

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of social media cancellation or cyber-ostracism on the mental condition of Instagram users based on the temporal need-threat model, as well as to assess the potential role of trait mindfulness in managing its negative effects. University student participants (M age = 21.248; SD = 1.21) were divided into cyber-ostracism scenario (n = 180) versus inclusion scenario (n = 179) groups and were required to complete the mood, four basic needs, and trait mindfulness scales. The results showed that cyber-ostracism had greater impact on the threat of the four basic needs compared to the mood of participants. Furthermore, trait mindfulness was found to predict lower threats to the needs of belonging, control, and meaningful existence, but not to self-esteem. The results also showed that the inclusion of trait mindfulness reduced the influence of cyber-ostracism on the fulfillment of control needs. These findings are expected to contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of cyber-ostracism and its emotional effects, as well as bridge the gap between the public phenomenon of cancel culture and ostracism literature.

Abstract

Human errors have commonly been perceived as the dominant cause of accidents. Different individuals may behave differently towards certain situations, leading to accidents. This study aims to model the relationship between the riders’ personalities, riding performance, and the probability of being involved in an accident. Adding mindfulness as a mediating variable and demographic factors as moderating variables are also essential points to developing the model. The Big Five Inventory (BFI) and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) were used to measure the respondents' traits, while the Honda Riding Trainer (HRT) was used as a simulation tool. The Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis shows that only the neuroticism variable significantly predicts mindfulness and riding performance. The openness and conscientiousness variables only significantly predicted mindfulness, while agreeableness is the only Big Five personality that significantly predicted riding performance. The results also show that although the mindfulness (M) variable in this study has not been able to become a mediating variable, it is strong enough as an exogenous variable for riding performance. The logistic regression analysis found that the worse the rider's performance, the greater the chance of an accident. Female riders are more than twice as likely to have an accident as male riders. These results indicate the need to research road safety that is differentiated by sex and its characteristics based on it. Doi: 10.28991/CEJ-SP2023-09-018 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

In the Malang Regency region, the issue of stunting is pressing. According to statistics showing the high rate of stunting in Malang Regency, a stunting management strategy must be put into place right away. To date, the issue has been whether policies at the upstream level address all the factors necessary to combat stunting. This study talks about how urgent municipal policies are, particularly for managing stunting. It should be mentioned that government policies currently in place are focused on improving and regulating food security, food quality, and program socialization. Additionally, both targeted and delicate treatments are a manifestation of the prevention of stunting. The heath industry performs specific interventions. The phenomenology of Malang Regency's stunting prevention strategies is revealed by this study. According to the study's findings, there are a number of issues that require immediate attention, particularly those that are local in nature, like local education on the marriage readiness index, particularly in areas with a high incidence of young marriage, like Tajinan sub-district. The health sector, as well as other connected sectors, must be involved in the regional follow-up to the village level of policies and regulations that are in place at the federal level. Due to the community's increased knowledge of the value of a balanced diet and the readiness of parents at marriageable age, the community-based coping system needs to be improved once more. Localized coping strategies will undoubtedly.
