Abstract

This research is about communication styles in Indonesia’s television series. The research was conducted because it had an interesting and unique phenomenon in it where the characters or actors and actresses had a certain communication style, which makes it interesting to be conducted. The communication style and the way of actors in Indonesia’s Television series ‘My nerd girl’ communicate are the aims of this research. This research was descriptive qualitative research because it aimed to describe and explain in depth a case that would be researched. The data was documentation which consists of the video and transcript of Indonesia’s television series called My Nerd Girl. The data was analyzed by using theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana, which consists of three steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research results showed that the communication style found in Indonesia’s Television series ‘My nerd girl’ are into slang, bad words, positive, and negative words. Another research result revealed that the way of communication in that series is just a style of speaking or the style of communication, which means certain characters speak English naturally in some scenes.

Abstract

Since many people have different cultural groups or cultural values sometimes causes misunderstandings. The research used descriptive qualitative which to investigate the different perspectives of both cultures such as the problem of misunderstanding of communication, the difference in communication styles and also to investigate the contrasting perspective in oral or written communication. The respondents of the research are Indonesian and Malaysian who took on social media YouTube. In collecting the data, the researchers used the observation with a video on YouTube and used diary notes to write the essential data of the research. The results shown that even though Malaysia and Indonesia are neighboring countries and these two countries almost have similar cultures, there are some different perspectives of understanding, especially in communication. Two aspects of communication became the issues of these two countries such as verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The different perspectives of communication style which classified into two aspects, namely verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The different perspective of verbal communication style occurs by using the words used or intonation to communicate or transfer the meaning. Meanwhile, the different perspectives of verbal communication style can be seen in the mannerism such as gestures or mimicking of people.

Abstract

This study is focused on describing the horizontal communication among employees with ethnic country diversity in the communication process and examining the barriers to communication as well as efforts made by the employees in resolving horizontal communication conflicts. The data collection technique used is a focus group discussion of structured interviews with three Indonesian and three Foreign employees. The interviews were done by dividing the employees into two discussion groups according to their ethnicity to answer the same research questions. The results show that the horizontal communication process between employees is going well and needs to be influenced by the diversity of employees in terms of ethnicity. Barriers to horizontal communication between employees are communication barriers in terms of employee psychology and semantics. Efforts made by employees in overcoming horizontal communication conflicts are by compromising. However, Indonesian employees tend to make efforts to integrate the implications of this study following the results of the research, which stated that employees’ ethnic diversity did not directly affect the continuity of horizontal communication among employees in the company.
