Abstract

Neonatal mortality is a leading cause of infant deaths, particularly in developing countries. In Serdang Bedagai Regency, the coverage of neonatal visits remains low, contributing to the high neonatal mortality rate and causing economic losses. This study aims to identify factors related to the neonatal visit coverage rate in Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study used a cross-sectional design with multivariate analysis. Data were collected from 200 mothers with babies aged 0-28 days in five health centers in Serdang Bedagai Regency. The variables analyzed include age, education, economic status, knowledge, maternal attitudes, culture, family support, midwife attitudes, access to health facilities, and service quality. The data were analyzed using logistic regression. The results showed that the variables consistently and significantly affecting the increase in neonatal visit coverage were maternal education, knowledge about neonatal visits, local culture, husband/family support, and the quality of visit services. Factors that significantly contributed to increasing coverage of neonatal visits were maternal education (p-value = 0.004, OR = 14.285), maternal knowledge (p-value = 0.000, OR= 75.920), local culture (p-value = 0.000, OR = 57.105), husband/family support (p-value = 0.000, OR = 77.763), and service quality (p-value = 0.000, OR = 47.474). These factors have a major influence in supporting the success of the neonatal visit program, with maternal knowledge and family support being the most dominant factors.. Efforts to increase coverage should involve educating mothers, involving families, and enhancing services while considering local wisdom.

Abstract

Chronic undernutrition in Indonesian school-aged children, with a 21.6% stunting prevalence (SSGI 2022), impairs cognitive development and academic performance in junior high school (SMP) students. This study aimed to identify determinants of academic achievement among Free Nutritious Meals Program (MBG) recipients in SMP Kota Payakumbuh, including nutritional status (BMI-for-age), attendance, MBG acceptability, and breakfast habits. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods cross-sectional design was applied to 243 eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 and SMPN 6 (February–March 2026), using anthropometry, SQ-FFQ, Comstock observation, questionnaires, and SPSS analysis (univariate, chi-square bivariate, logistic regression). Most students showed good nutritional status (70.4%), high attendance (93.4%), and good achievement (75.7%), but low MBG acceptability (46.1% poor) and suboptimal breakfast habits (61.3% skipping). Bivariate analysis indicated significant associations of nutritional status (p=0.035) and attendance (p=0.001) with achievement, whereas MBG acceptability (p=0.997) and breakfast habits (p=0.718) were not significant. These results underscore MBG's potential to enhance achievement via improved nutrition and school participation, recommending menu diversification and sustained nutrition education. Abstract

The purpose of neonatal visits is to re-examine newborns, review counseling and anticipation guidelines with parents, identify symptoms of illness, and educate and support parents. The purpose of neonatal visits is to improve neonatal access to basic health services and to find out as early as possible if there are abnormalities in the baby or if there are problems. One important indicator to describe the level of public health is the infant mortality rate. Objective to find out more about the perspectives on neonatal visit coverage in Serdang Bedagai District, Indonesia. The study was a qualitative with phenomenology approach. Twenty-five informants were applied in this study using purposive sampling. Data were collected using in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using content analysis by the collaizi method. The study emerged nine themes, namely: 1) knowledge about neonatal visits; 2) neonatal visit quantity standards; 3) neonatal visit quality standards; 4) health care workers providing neonatal visiting services; 5) purpose of neonatal visits; 6) relationship between education and neonatal visit compliance; 7) relationship between husband/family support and neonatal visit compliance; 8) reasons for non-compliance with neonatal visits; and 9) culture in support of public health. These results can be input for policymakers to increase the coverage of neonatal visits in Serdang Bedagai Regency, Indonesia.

Abstract

Anemia remains one of the major nutritional problems commonly affecting adolescent girls, with a relatively high prevalence in many countries, including Indonesia. This condition is primarily caused by inadequate iron intake and low adherence to Iron-Folic Acid (IFA) or iron tablet supplementation programs. Limited knowledge and low interest among adolescents in nutrition-related information contribute to poor preventive behaviors. Traditional educational methods, such as lectures, tend to be one-way and less engaging for this age group. In contrast, audiovisual media are considered more effective because they combine visual and auditory elements that make health messages easier to understand and remember. This study aims to review the effectiveness of audiovisual media in preventing anemia among adolescent girls based on recent research findings. This study employed a literature review method by searching articles from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases using the keywords “audiovisual education,” “anemia prevention,” and “adolescent girls.” The review process was conducted systematically through four main stages: organization, synthesis, identification, and advanced analysis. Articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including publication year (2020–2025), participants aged 13–19 years, and a focus on the effectiveness of audiovisual media in anemia prevention. Five eligible articles were thematically analyzed to draw conclusions regarding the impact of audiovisual media on adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and preventive behaviors toward anemia. The review findings indicated that the use of audiovisual media consistently improved adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and motivation in anemia prevention. Several studies reported an increased in adherence to iron supplementation following audiovisual-based educational interventions. This medium was also perceived as more engaging and easier to comprehend compared to conventional approaches. Audiovisual media serve as an effective, engaging, and interactive educational tool to enhance knowledge and promote preventive behaviors against anemia among adolescent girls.
