Abstract

The provision of jumping tasks (JT) is an effort to improve students' problem-solving abilities. Descriptive qualitative research was conducted to describe and analyze students' ability to solve mathematical problems, both in the field-dependent cognitive style (FD) and independent field (FI). JT is a high-level question, C4-C6, in Bloom's taxonomy on the Three Variable Linear Equation System topic. The subjects in this study were students of class X MIPA 1 of SMA Negeri 4 Jember with 30 students consisting of 5 FD students and 25 FI students. The data collection method uses tests (JT questions) and interviews. The results showed the differences in FD and FI subjects' ability in the stages of carrying out the plan of completion and re-checking, i.e., the FI subject had better solving ability than the FD subject in the stage of planning the completion and re-checking. In contrast, at the other Polya stages, there were no differences.

Abstract

Indonesian students are lacking in critical thinking skills, however, studies analyzing critical thinking processes and their relation to thinking styles are limited. This study aimed to describe students’ critical thinking processes in solving jumping task problems according to Gregorc's thinking style. The subjects of this present qualitative research were eight Year 7 students. The instruments included a thinking style questionnaire, tests, and interview guidelines. The results showed that concrete sequential subjects tended to write the completion stages sequentially and analyzed them well. Abstract sequential subjects were inclined to solve the problems based on the known concepts without completing the work. Concrete random subjects tended to write information in their own way without completing their work. Meanwhile, abstract random subjects were inclined to write incomplete information and did not complete their work. Generally, based on the IDEALS model, the two sequential subjects were similar in the identity, define, and enumerate steps, while the two random subjects only had similarities in the identity step. This study results imply that jumping tasks can be used as an alternative in developing students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Abstract Reflective thinking which consists of the stages of reacting, elaborating/comparing, and contemplating is one of the factors that play an important role in students' activities in solving mathematical problems. This study aims to describe the reflective thinking ability of junior high school students in solving social arithmetic problems based on gender. This study uses a qualitative descriptive study on students of class IXF at a SMP Negeri at Banyuwangi. Data collection using test and interview methods. A written test containing material on social arithmetic was given to 31 students of class IXF. Then based on the results of the contemplating stage, 4 students were selected consisting of 2 male students and 2 female students to participate in the interview. Triangulation method is used to obtain valid data, namely comparing the results of written tests with interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that there were some similarities and differences between male students and female students in reflective thinking when solving social arithmetic problems. In the reacting phase, male students and female students were equally good at writing down what was known and what was asked in the question using words from the questions or using their own language. At the elaborating/comparing stage, female students showed better abilities than male students in connecting what was known to what was asked, mentioning the adequacy of information to answer questions, connecting the problems asked to problems that had been received before, compiling a problem-solving plan based on experience and solve problems using the strategies that have been prepared. At the contemplating stage, male students had better achievements than female students in finding errors in determining answers, explaining where errors were, correcting errors, and making correct conclusions. Overall, female students have better reflective thinking skills than male students. Based on these results, it is suggested that mathematics teachers should always train students to develop reflective thinking skills in mathematical problem solving activities at school. Furthermore, students are trained to present how to do all the stages of reflective thinking, so that all students, both male and female, have excellent reflective thinking skills to solve mathematical problems. Keywords: Gender; Reflective Thinking; Social Arithmetic; Solving Math Problems.

Abstract

The questions asked by the teacher affect students' thinking processes. So, it is necessary to do research that aims to describe what types of questions can provoke students to behave critically. The research subjects were 40 junior high school students around a coffee plantation in Jember, Indonesia. The data collection methods in this study were (1) test, (2) observation, and (3) interview. Each test was given two questions that meet the criteria for critical thinking behavior with the theme of coffee. The test is given at the end of mathematics lessons every Monday. Observations focused on three critical thinking behaviors, namely truth-seeking, open-mindedness, and inquisitiveness. Interviews were conducted at the end of the activity, namely after five learning meetings.  There are two findings in this research. First, junior high school students around coffee plantations are accustomed to truth-seeking, open-mindedness, and inquisitiveness in responding to questions from teachers. The habit of students in responding to teacher questions begins at the third meeting in learning. Second, there are three types of questions that can provoke students to behave critically. The three types of questions are questions that require students to construct concepts, principles, and procedures.
