Abstract

Hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching of limonite ore to extract valuable metals including Ni and Co are often non-selective, including other metals in the leachate product. The leaching behavior of Cr from the chromite mineral contained in limonite ore is of concern due to the high Cr content of the leachate effluent. The pre-roasted process is frequently used to pre-treat limonite to increase the precious metal content. This study aims to determine the leaching behavior of Cr and the effect of pre-roasting on its kinetic parameters. The pre-roasting process was carried out at 280 and 610 oC for 4 hours. Observation of Cr leaching behavior was carried out in the leaching temperature range of 30-90 oC for 0-120 minutes using sulfuric acid solvent. The highest Cr recovery was achieved in pre-roasted ore leaching at 610 oC with leaching operating conditions of 2 M sulfuric acid, solid-liquid ratio of 5 g/50 mL, 200 rpm, for 120 minutes, at a leaching temperature of 90 oC, under these conditions Cr recovery reached 53.16%. The higher the roasting temperature, the lower the activation energy required for the leaching process. Cr leaching from raw and pre-roasted ore is controlled by the diffusion process through the ash layer with activation energies (EA) of 21.41, 18.64, and 14.71 kJ/mol for raw ore, pre-roasted ore 280 oC, and pre roasted ore 610 oC, respectively. The comparison of kinetics data from several roasting products for atmospheric leaching feeds will provide industry with information to integrated pyro-hydrometallurgical process to increase Cr production from laterite.

Abstract

Limbah sekam padi dari penggilingan gabah dapat menimbulkan masalah lingkungan karena sering digunakan hanya sebagai pakan ternak, disimpan atau dibuang langsung. Di sisi lain, limbah sekam padi dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai salah satu bahan bakar reaktor gasifikasi. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan agar dapat memberikan alternatif solusi untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut dengan mengubah limbah sekam padi menjadi bahan bakar yang bermanfaat dan bernilai ekonomis. Kegiatan ini menyasar pemilik, pekerja, dan masyarakat sekitar PT Talasalapang Agro, Desa Gangang Baku, Dusun Bilampang Tanah Karaeng, Manuju Kab Gowa. Metode yang digunakan pada pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah service learning dimana bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman Masyarakat terhadap pemanfaatan limbah sekam padi menjadi bahan bakar reactor gasifikasi. Limbah sekam padi dimanfaatkan dengan metode gasifikasi menggunakan reaktor model aliran atas (Updraft). Metode kegiatan ini adalah berinteraksi dengan staf dan karyawan serta memberikan pengetahuan tentang pembuatan reaktor gasifikasi dan manfaat yang diperoleh dari sekam padi tersebut. Hasil yang di harapkan dapat membuat staf dan karyawan memahami pentingnya penggunaan sekam padi sebagai energi alternatif dan cara membuat reaktor gasifikasi. Didapatkan pula peningkatan pemahaman sebesar 100% oleh peserta PKM tentang pemanfaatan limbah sekam padi khususnya untuk bahan bakar reaktor gasifikasi. Mitra mengharapkan keberlanjutan program ini untuk pengembangan reaktor gasifikasi skala besar.

Abstract

Extraction of valuable metals from laterite is intensified. The scarcity of sulfide sources containing high Ni and the use of pyrometallurgical processes with high capital costs are important reasons to initiate extraction of valuable metals from oxide minerals such as laterite and hydrometallurgical processes such as leaching. In this study, the effect of pre-roasting of limonite type laterite on Fe leaching kinetics parameters was observed. Roasting was carried out at 280 °C and 610 °C to transform the geotite phase into hematite and dehydroxylate Mg-Si associated minerals. Roasting was carried out for 4 hours in a muffle furnace. Non-roasted and roasted ore were then leached at a temperature range of 30-90 °C at a time variation of 0 to 240 minutes using sulfuric acid at a concentration of 2M, S/L ratio of 10 g/100 mL, and rotating speed of 200 rpm. Roasted ore (280 °C) showed better leaching performance than non-roasted ore while increasing the roasting temperature to 610 °C did not provide a significant increase in Fe recovery. Kinetic parameters such as activation energy (EA) and frequency factor were also reduced by using roasted ore. An EA value of 31.66 kJ/mol was obtained in the leaching process using 280 °C roasted ore. The leaching process is confirmed to be controlled by diffusion through the product layer with the following kinetic equation kt=31.59 exp (-31.66/(RT))t=1-2/3X-(1-X)^(2/3).
