Abstract

Molecular information using gene variants could support livestock selection to improve livestock productivity. This study aimed to identify the variants in part of the MSTN gene (part of the third exon coding region), a gene known for its significant effect on muscle growth. DNA was isolated from 95 Madura cattle blood samples collected in Pamekasan, Madura. PCR was used to amplify to MSTN region in part of the third exon, and one-way sequencing was conducted to obtain the sequence from the amplified product. Six SNPs were identified. Four SNPs were novel mutations, and the other two SNPs were recorded in the Ensembl database (rs466598800 and rs211583837). Among the identified novel mutations, one mutation in c.1301G/T caused a stop codon for the TT genotype cattle. However, no cattle carried the TT genotype. Three other mutations in c.1324, c.1373, and c.1399 were missense mutations that change the amino acids Q311L, A318P, and L335B, respectively. Most of the cattle had heterozygote genotypes for all the identified SNPs. It could also be noted that there were sequence differences in the part of the third exon identified between Madura cattle and Zebu cattle (by Tantia et al., 2006).

Abstract

Germplasm diversity is a valuable source of genetic material whose existence needs to be protected and preserved. One of the original Indonesian goat germplasms is Senduro goat, which has been established by the Decree of the Ministry of Agriculture Republic of Indonesia No. 1055/Kpts/ SR.120/10/2014 and originates from Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java. The purpose of the study was to analyze the phenotypic traits of Senduro goats based on their quantitative traits. Phenotype observations include body length, chest circumference, shoulder height, ear length, and rewos hair length and correlate each phenotype trait. The materials used in this study were 14 and 25 head of adult male and female Senduro goats, respectively. Senduro goats that were observed in the condition of incisor the thirdth (I3 ) were replaced by permanent teeth, it mean the Senduro goats aged 2-4 years. The morphometric data obtained were calculated as mean, standard deviation, and correlation between morphometric measures using the Genstat 14.2 program and then analyzed descriptively. The results of this study showed that Senduro goats had a body weight of 24.56 ± 5.48 kg (male) and 26.84 ± 6.50 kg (female), a body length of 63.89 ± 4.76 cm (male) and 63.32 ± 6.29 cm (female), a chest circumference of 61.67 ± 4.36 kg (male) and 66, 48 ± 6.56 cm (female), a shoulder height of 66.33 ± 4.53 cm (male) and 64.71 ± 5.76 cm (female), ear length of 31.22 ± 2.17 cm (male) and 28.13 ± 2.74 cm (female), and length of rewos/surai hair of 17.56 ± 1.67 cm (male) and 14.58 ± 2.39 cm (female) Morphometric measures in Senduro goats are positively correlated with each other. There is a highly significant correlation between chest circumference, body length, and height and body weight in Senduro goats.

Abstract

The epididymis is a crucial component of the goat's reproductive structure. The epididymis is responsible for the transportation, concentration, and maturation of sperm. This study aimed to examine the differences in the structure of macro and microanatomy, tissue composition, and the existence of androgen receptors in the epididymis of Kacang goats aged 4, 8, and 12 months. The assessment of macroscopic organ growth was done immediately after sampling, whereas microscopic measurements were carried out following histological preparations using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and immunohistochemical (IHC) procedures. The results on the macroscopic anatomy of the epididymis indicated a significant association between age with the width of the caput dexter and sinister and the circumference of the right cauda. However, no significant relationship was found between age with the corpus length and the left cauda's circumference. Significant variations were observed in the diameter and concentration of the agglutinated spermatozoa in the lumen during histomorphometry of the epididymis in three age groups of Kacang goats. There were no statistically significant variations in the expression of androgen receptors among the three age groups. This study showed that the correlation coefficient test reveals a positive relationship between age and the caput width and corpus length dimensions, indicating that these measurements tend to grow as age increases. On the other hand, the diameter of the agglutinated spermatozoa in the epididymal lumen exhibits significant variations between the ages of 4 months, with the ages of 8 months and 12 months, suggesting that the sperm becomes fully matured by the age of 8 months.

Abstract

Senggreng Village is one of the areas in Sumber Pucung District, Malang Regency, promising to be developed in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and agro-tourism. Abundant water resources mainly support the fisheries and agriculture potency due to its position near the Sutami Dam. One of the community groups in Senggreng Village, "Sumber Duren", is "engaged in developing a small amusement park that integrates culinary, fishing park and freshwater fish farming business, managed through a cage system. Regardless of its considerable potency, fish farming has not been carried out intensively, especially due to the high prices of commercial fish feed. Therefore, this community service team proposed a solution by initiating mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) cultivation as a cheap, high-protein, and sustainable source of fish feed to increase crop yields. Experienced mealworm practitioners also provided intensive mealworm cultivation education, training, and profitable business planning. Through this program, the community group "Sumber Duren" has been" successful in cultivating mealworms starting from the seedling phase to becoming broodstock and laying eggs. Based on the questionnaire data collection, most community group members stated that this community service activity helped provide new knowledge interested in cultivating alternative feeds, and 80% of respondents expected the activity to continue in the following years.

Abstract
