Abstract

A marked increase in demand for white mice (Mus musclulus L., mammals) in the Indonesian market has been attributed to the price soar, while the availability of mice with a standardized quality remains very limited. Considering such condition, a business focusing on standardized farm of white mice should be actively socialized to younger people thereby elevating their enthusiasm in the entrepreneurship. This community service program aimed to provide insights as well as to train the basic skills in white mouse farming for students of the National High School Number 5 Bukittinggi. The program has been carried out for one day in the Biology Department, Andalas University with 45 participants. We deployed the lectures and hands-on practice on the aspects of white mouse farming. All participants have directly practiced various principle techniques in mice farming such as handling, sexing, mating, and raising brooders. This activity has increased the interest of the participants in such creative business. In the future, some efforts should be made to ensure the sustainability of the program by involving the participants from other schools, teachers and unemployed youth in West Sumatra.

Abstract

Stingless bee cultivation in Indonesia, one of which is in West Sumatra, has the potential as an effort to improve the community's economy. Stingless bees, commonly called Galo-galo, can produce honey, propolis, and bee pollen, which have many benefits and produce high selling power. The community service activity accompanying the Bukik Nabu Business (UBUNA) aimed to develop the Galo-galo cultivation business in the Limau Manis village. This village has optimum natural conditions to cultivate stingless bees due to the availability of feed plant surroundings. The method used directly assisted the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of UBUNA. It started by adding the number of colonies to the community, harvesting independently on the type of Heterotrigona itama and Geniotrigona thoracica, upscaling branding, making product labels, product promotions, legality, and participating in collaborative events and festivals.

Abstract

The development of ecotourism in Kapalo Banda, Limau Manis, Padang, has potential to be expanded into agro-ecotourism through multi-stakeholder involvement. Key attractions include the scenic of river flows, agricultural cultivation, and stingless bee keeping, which support environmental sustainability and the local economy. With high vegetation diversity, the potential for stingless bee (galo-galo) breeding as a creative economic initiative offers new opportunities. This program aligns with the West Sumatra Provincial Government’s efforts to establish the area as a honey production center. However, challenges such as low colony production due to limited knowledge of farming techniques and the availability of flowering feed hinder its development. Through community engagement, empowerment activities were conducted from June to September 2024, including socialization, demonstrations, and training in bee farming techniques, supported by expert teams. Education focused on the potential of galo-galo and marketing strategies for local products. The results of this program indicate improved community skills and knowledge, supporting local economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation. Kapalo Banda partners have the potential to serve as a model for community empowerment based on natural resources, effectively enhancing community welfare. Multi-stakeholder involvement in developing Kapalo Banda Ecotourism has resulted in a series of activities ranging from cultivation preparation, colony propagation techniques, harvest preparation, to downstream processing and product marketing.
