Abstract

Laminated composites are composed of multiple layers that work together to achieve specific properties. Several factors influence the strength of these composites, including the quality of the surface layers, the strength of the bonds between layers, the adhesion properties, and the thermal behavior. The adhesive plays a crucial role in connecting the layers to form a laminated composite. This study investigates the effect of environmental exposure on the bond strength between the surfaces of laminated composite layers. The laminated composites are made from mahogany wood and are adhered using PVAc adhesive under a pressure of 2 MPa for 30 minutes. After being prepared, the samples are allowed to sit for several days before being immersed in distilled water, seawater, and vegetable oil. Each immersion lasts for 24 hours. The results indicate that the laminated composites experienced a degradation of mechanical properties following exposure to distilled water, seawater, and vegetable oil. Among these, distilled water had the most detrimental effect on the performance of the laminated composite, while exposure to vegetable oil resulted in relatively insignificant changes to its mechanical properties.

Abstract

One of the welding used for different materials is by using friction welding. Friction welding is a welding method by swiping the two materials until they reach some of the melting points of the materials to be joined and then subjected to constant pressure. In this study, the materials to be joined were aluminum and copper. By using variations of rotational speed and contact surface roughness, the mechanical properties of the welds were investigated. The speed variations used were 1230, 1500, and 2500 rpm. Meanwhile, for variations in surface roughness, sandpaper grades 100, 800, and 1500 were used. The results of this study were that at a rotational speed of 1230 rpm, the highest tensile strength and hardness values were obtained, namely 59.6 MPa and 54.6 HVN (Al), 112.1 HVN (Cu). For variations in surface roughness, the highest hardness value was found in surface roughness using sandpaper grade 1500, namely 54.18HVN (Al), and 112.1HVN (Cu). And the highest tensile strength is obtained on grade 100 sandpaper with a value of 52.48MPa. The results of the microstructure test in the weld joint area with a magnification of 1000x showed that the welding of aluminum and copper using the friction welding method was successful, as evidenced by the diffusion of aluminum and copper in this area.

Abstract

In an increasingly competitive industrial environment, effective maintenance strategies are critical to ensure optimal machine performance and minimize downtime. This report focuses on the implementation of preventive maintenance in the cold saw area at PT. KBK, a steel production company. Preventive maintenance procedures were carried out to sustain machine reliability, particularly focusing on components such as the roll table, bolt coupling motor translation, sliding rails, and hydraulic motors. The report outlines the preventive maintenance schedule, inspection processes, and key findings during the maintenance period. The most frequently encountered issue was the deterioration of the saw blade, affecting cutting quality and operational efficiency. Contributing factors to these issues include human error, material hardness, improper maintenance methods, and machine age. A fishbone diagram analysis was used to determine root causes of failures, highlighting areas for improvement in maintenance practices. The study concludes that consistent preventive maintenance is essential to reduce machine failures, enhance productivity, and improve product quality. Recommendations are provided to enhance the maintenance process, including increased use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and more stringent inspection protocols.
