Abstract

A recent study to providing valid checklist of stingrays species in South Sumatran waters provide 14 species: Brevitrygon heterura, Fluvitrygon kittipongi, Fluvitrygon oxyrhyncha, Fluvitrygon signifier, Fluvitrygon sp ‘musi’ 1, Fluvitrygon sp ‘musi’ 2, Himantura undulata, Himantura uarnak, Maculabatis gerrardi, Pateobatis fai, Pateobatis uarnacoides, Pastinachus ater, Telatrygon biasa  and Urogymnus polylepis. Distributional patterns of stingrays in South Sumatran waters are depend on species or (at least) genus level. Stingrays in South Sumatran waters are recorded from of up to more 100 km inland to the coastal zone area. Following IUCN Red List status, 10 species of stingrays are threatened with status Endangered, Vulnerable and Data Deficient; suggest the South Sumatran waters are important habitat for stingrays in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the diversity of butterflies at the Gunung Raya Wildlife Reserve, South Sumatra. The research was conducted in January-February 2018. The research sites were 4 different habitat types, namely primary forest, secondary forest, riparian area, and bush and plantation. Data collection uses direct observation and capture techniques along the transect line (linear transect counting) along 1000 m in each habitat type using insect nets. The results of the study obtained 55 butterfly species belonging to 5 families (there were 13 species of Papilionidae, 30 species of Nymphalidae, 7 species of Pieridae, 1 species of Riodinidae, and 4 species of Lycaenidae). The highest Shanon diversity index is in primary forest habitat (Manduriang) with H'= 3.5; followed by shrubs and plantations (Pasir Bintang) with H'= 3.45, and riparian areas (Talang Lebong) with H' = 3.23; while the lowest is secondary forest (Mesagih) with H'= 2.94. Distribution of species in all locations  is relative (E> 0.9) and high species richness (R> 4). 2 butterfly species protected by Regulations of the Environtment and Forestry Ministers No 20 of 2018, namely Troides helena and Trogonoptera brookiana has been found in this study.

Abstract

Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are one of four Asian elephants subspecies, which are categorized as Critically Endangered by the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) since 2011. Some factors that might drive this species into extinction ranges from wild attacks in the forest, habitat degradation due to land acquisition for plantation and development areas, and human slaughter because they regard these animals as enemies that sometimes enter community settlements. Elephants in Sembilang National Park is an interesting issue because it has not been registered as key species in Sembilang National Park, as well as no authentic evidence and official reports about the existence of elephants in the park. This paper proves the existence of elephants in Sembilang National Park, South Sumatra. The elephant documentation is in the form of photos and videos of 4 different elephant individuals, footage, cruising lanes and elephant puddles. Evidence of the existence of elephants in Sembilang National Park strongly indicates that future actions, participation and attention of all stakeholders are needed to the conservation efforts of the biggest Sumatran mammals in Sembilang National Park

Abstract

The Sumatran Striped Rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri ) is  a naturally rare, which is a protected animal based on Government Regulation Number 7 of 1999 and renewal of Permen LHK No. P.106 which are categorized as Data Deficient  by the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) since 2019. Samples were obtained from Pagar Alam, South Sumatra. Most commonly found at elevations  above 600 m in montane and sub-montane primary habitat. Molecular genetic characterization of sumatran striped rabbit is to know genetic information and genetic identification of N. netscheri. Primers 12S rRNA were used in this study to characterize Sumatran striped rabbit. A 1 band were detected ranged from 900 to 1000 bp. Molecular markers represent reliable tools which may have a great impact in rabbit breeding and genetic improvement of rabbits. Molecular markers on Nesolagus netscheri is expected to tools in the identification of Sumatran striped rabbits from South Sumatra.

Abstract

A research to monitor the presence of Sumatran elephant between two ecosystem in Sembilang National Park (TNSTNS) and palm palm oilplantation has been conducted on March until June 2019 at Semenanjung Banyuasin Semenanjung, South Sumatra. This research aimed to verify the presence of Sumatran elephantpopulation and to estimate the number of elephant individuals in the area. The methods used weredirect observation during the day and indirect monitoring through installation of Camera Traps for 1 month. In addition, secondary data was collected in the form of data archives from the palm oil plantation records and interviews with affected plantation workers. From direct observation, Wedirect encountered one elephant individual and fifteen signs of elephant activities, such as sounds, footprints, and feces. From camera trap photos, we identified and verified onepopulation of Sumatran Elephants which consisted of at least twenty-two individuals with composition as follows: eight adult females, two young females, three infant females, and nine males. The ecotone area between TNS and palm palm oil plantation should be designated as a new habitat patchof Sumatran elephant that needs to be managed appropriately in order to maintain the designation of the area as a conservation area.

Abstract

Sumatran Elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is one of the endemic Sumatran fauna that is protected by Indonesia Law. The Remnant Forest of Acacia District Penyabungan in the landscape of Padang Sugihan is one of the elephant’s habitats in South Sumatra. Habitat degradation and fragmentation, poaching and conflicts become the major threats for the elephant population. Genetic study is one of the efforts to establish a conservation policy. It is necessary to test the quantitative and qualitative of DNA, at the extractions stage from fecal samples, in order to get the standard results on DNA concentration which will be analyzed later. The method used is through direct observation as the initial survey to determine the sampling location. Fecal samples were preserved in absolute ethanol at -20°C.  The extraction process was carried out using the Quick-DNATM Fecal/Soil Microbe Miniprep Kit. Samples were tested quantitatively using a Nanodrop Thermo Scientific, with the expectation that the concentration results were considered to be 1.6-1.8 and continued with the qualitative test of DNA through electrophoresis gel agarose and UV Transilluminator. Of the 20 samples, only 12 samples showed positive results (there were DNA bands). The results of this quantitative and qualitative test could be used to determine a viable sample to be used as a product in the genetic analysis stage of Sumatran Elephants in the Remnant Forest of Acacia South Sumatra.

Abstract

The Tawny coster Acraea terpsicore (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a non-native species of butterfly that has been recorded in Sumatra since 2009. Summarize recent review confirmed 40 spatial distribution records of A. terpsicore between 2009 to 2020. These records suggest A. terpsicore have widely distributed and colonialized in Sumatra.

Abstract

Structure and vegetation Analysis composition in the area used for cultivation of mount forest wild-life conservation of Gunung Raya in Warkuk subdistrict of OKU Selatan regency can describe the plant biodi-versity, abundace, spesies dominance, type and vegetation profile, and the succesion pattern. The vegetation data was from the transek method which is line compartmentalized, namely 3 transek with the 10 plot per sta-tion. The observation was done in every growth of the vegetation which was grouped into four levels, such as seedling and caver plant, sapling, pole and tree. the result showed that the vegetation composition for the tree level in the first station were dominated by Shorea sp (with the important Index Value 36.81%), the pole domi-nated by Syzygium polyanthum, and saplings with dominated by Styrax benzoin and seedlings and cover plants with dominated by Calamus sp. The second station for the tree level which was comprised of five spe-cies of trees with dominated by Litsea mappaceae. While dominated by Homalanthus populneus. The next is the 10 spesies of saplings with 8 families which dominated by Adianthum capillus (with the important index value of 52.55%).

Abstract

Telah dilakukan penelitian untuk mempelajari keanekaragaman jenis tumbuhan tingkat pohon pada  hutan hujan pegunungan bagian bawah yang terpengaruh aktivitas manusia di Taman Nasional Lore Lindu, Sulawesi Tengah. Empat tipe habitat yang ditentukan berdasarkan adanya aktivitas manusia berupa penebangan dan perkebunan adalah (H1) hujan primer/hutan sekunder tua, (H2) hutan sekunder ± 30 tahun setelah di tebang, (H3) hutan sekunder dengan perkebunan kopi dan coklat skala kecil didalamnya, dan (H4) hutan sekunder dengan tebang pilih dan perkebunan di dalamnya. Analisa vegetasi dilakukan dengan metode Titik Perempatan, dengan titik pengambilan sampel ditentukan secara acak. Pengmbilan data dilakukan pada bulan Februari sampai Juni 2001. Hasil yang didapat menunjukkan bahwa pohon dengan nilai penting tinggi di tiap habitat, adalah Dysoxylum sp., Elmerillia sp., dan Palaquiun sp. A. Habitat Hq didominasi oleh Ficus Chrysolepis. Habitat H2 didominasi oleh Ermellia sp. dan Palaquiun sp. A. Tipe habitat H3 didominasi oleh Palaquium sp. A dan Pterospermum celebicum. Tipe habitat H4, didominasi oleh Cryptocarya infectoria dan Antidesma cumingii.

Abstract

Remnant forests of PT. Suryabumi Agrolanggeng and surrounding traditional rubber plantations need to be managed as habitat for some wildlife as well as an important region for the company's activities. Tarsier which is one of the protected wildlife inhabit the area has the potential to become a "flagship species" in the frame of environmental management efforts of the Company. This study was aimed to estimate the ab-undance and habitat of tarsiers in such area. The study sites consist of forested area of PT. Suryabumi Agro-langgeng forests (study site-1) and the traditional rubber plantations managed by local people (study site-2). The estimated abundance of tarsier in both sites were respectively 0,25 ind/ha and 0,08 ind/ha. Plant species found are 18 species of 14 families and 23 species of 15 families. Potential number of insects as tarsier prey are 20 species of 14 families. SWOT analysis approach to internal and external factors showing High Conservation Values (HCV) of the forested area of PT. Suryabumi Agrolanggeng (study site-1) and could lead the determina-tion of the status of such area as a conservation area.
