Abstract

Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms that are widely distributed in waters. They have the potential as an alternative source of pigments, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. In this study, identification and isolation of single-cell microalgae from Ambon Bay were carried out by serial dilution method and inoculation of the culture by appearance/spread on the surface of the solidified agar medium. The results showed that the waters of Ambon Bay have physical parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity, and TDS, which are still within the threshold specified in the seawater quality standard for biota. The water conditions at the 10 sampling locations had different salinity, pH, temperature, and TDS. This condition affects the distribution of microalgae in the waters in Ambon Bay. The image from light microscopy shows that there are 27 species of microalgae scattered in the waters of Ambon Bay, which belong to the classes Chlorophyceae, Flagilariophyceae, Bacillariophyceae (diatoms), Coscinodiscophyceae, and Dinophyceae. Microalgae isolation obtained five species (single-cell) including four species from the class Bacillariophyta (Navicula sp, Nitzschia sp, Cyclotella sp) and one species from the class Chlorophyta (Chlorella sp).

Abstract

Microalgae Navicula sp. TAD is a microscopic plant that has the potential to serve as an alternative source of pigments, requiring relatively short cultivation time, making it suitable for use as a sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells. This research aimed to isolate, characterize, and identify the photosynthetic pigments of Navicula sp. TAD, and subsequently test its photoelectric capability as a sensitizer material in solar cells. The study involved cultivating Navicula sp. TAD cells to obtain biomass, isolating pigments from dry biomass, purifying pigments using column chromatography techniques, characterizing pigments by scanning visible light absorption patterns, and fabricating solar cells with TiO2 paste, followed by testing the photoelectric capabilities of the solar cells. From the research, pigments such as β-carotene, chlorophyll a, xanthophyll, and chlorophyll c were obtained, with chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents of 29.9698 μg/mL and 18.4255 μg/mL, respectively. Solar cells sensitized with photosynthetic pigments showed the best photoelectric performance with crude pigment extract at a concentration of 30×10³ ppm, yielding Short-circuit current density (ISC) 1.93×10⁻⁵ A;  open-circuit voltage (VOC) 0.0465 V; fill factor (FF).58; and efficiency (η) 8.33×10⁻² %. Meanwhile, variations in pigment concentration of chlorophyll and xanthophyll at a ratio of 0:100 yielded ISC 9.96×10⁻⁵ A; VOC 0.1004 V; FF 0.45; and η 7.24×10⁻¹ %.

Abstract

The quality of clean water used has been a top priority to maintain health and fulfill daily needs. There are many sources of clean water, including well water, bottled water, gallon water and PDAM water. The use of clean water in Poka Village still uses well water and gallon water, so there is concern among the community regarding the cleanliness and quality of the water. Therefore, this service is carried out to help answer public anxiety by introducing Drinking Water Quality Standards that have been determined in the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Health Regulation No. 492/MENKES/PER/IV/2010. Apart from that, we also show findings of polluted well water and also provide solutions on how to care for wells. During material delivery activities, we use an educational and participatory approach with the main focus being the community. The result of this service activity is that the community in Poka Village has good knowledge regarding drinking water quality standards so that it is hoped that the community can apply them in their daily lives.

Abstract

Navicula sp. TAD is a microalga with silica-based cell walls, offering potential to improve photon interaction in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This study combined Navicula sp. TAD frustules with TiO2 to fabricate DSSC working electrodes. The objectives were to isolate and characterize the frustules, optimize the TiO2–frustule ratio, and evaluate photoelectric performance. The workflow consisted of cultivating Navicula sp., isolating pigments and frustules, fabricating solar cells with varied electrode compositions, and performing photoelectric testing under a solar simulator. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis confirmed that the frustules possess nanoporous surfaces and exhibit Si–O–Si and Si–OH functional groups. Electrodes incorporating TiO2–frustule blends showed compact pore networks, along with additional functional groups. Performance screening across compositions identified an optimal TiO2–frustule ratio of 40:60, which delivered an efficiency of 10.51%, a short-circuit current density of 0.673 A, an open-circuit voltage of 301.8 mV, and a fill factor of 0.32. These findings indicate that frustule-enabled light management and surface chemistry can jointly enhance dye loading and charge collection in DSSC photoanodes relative to TiO2 alone.
