Abstract

The title of the study which is “Noun Formation with Reference to Articles on Politics published in Jakarta Globe Newspaper” is aimed at investigating the kinds and functions of derivational suffixes forming nouns and how the meaning of derivation words is represented in the sentence. The data were taken from the online newspaper The Jakarta Globe. The method used in collecting the data was documentation method and a note-taking technique. The descriptive qualitative approach was used in analyzing the data. The theory applied to analyze the data was the theory of Morphology proposed by Plag (2018) and Bauer (1983). In addition, Oxford's Learner Dictionary was used to classify the word class and the meaning of derivation words. The result shows that there were twelve kinds of nominal suffixes found, namely suffix ship/, /-ance/ (and its variant ence,), /-ism/, /-ity/, /-er/ (and it's variant or), /-ant/, /-ce/-cy/, /-ing/, /-ion/( with its variant –action, -ification), /-ee/, /-an/ (with its variant –ean, -Ian), and /-ment/. There were two functions of derivational suffixes: class-maintaining derivation of nouns from nouns and class-changing derivations, such as nouns from verbs and adjectives. The meaning of the derivation words is based on the context of the sentence.

Abstract

Face-threatening Acts or FTAs are an interesting phenomenon within the linguistic branch of Pragmatics to study and investigate. It involves not only acts that threaten interlocutors but also strategies for doing these acts. Subsequently, this study focused on the FTAs phenomenon, specifically occurred in the movie, Darkest Hour, a movie revolving around Winston Churchill’s reign as the UK’s Prime Minister. This study aimed to find out FTAs performed by the characters and how the characters attempt to either reduce it or not. Consequently, the data were obtained from the movie, Darkest Hour. This study used Qualitative and Descriptive methods to analyze the FTAs phenomenon in line with Brown and Levinson’s (1987) initiated theory. This study would attempt to identify what FTAs occur in the movie and determine what strategy is being used at the same time. Ultimately, this study found cases of FTA towards the hearer’s positive face (i.e., complaints, criticism, reprimands, non-cooperation, insult, expression of violent emotion, raising dangerously emotional topics, accusation, disapproval, disagreement, irreverence.) more frequent than the negative counterpart (i.e., order, suggestion, advice, warning, request, threat, anger, and reminder). In addition, the characters tend to perform those FTAs directly and without minimization. Based on those findings, the FTA phenomenon in this movie might occurred due to the character’s persistence in holding and imposing their virtues on others.

Abstract

Psychoanalytic criticism employs Freud's and following theorists' "reading" techniques to interpret texts. It is argued that literary texts, like dreams, reveal the author's unconscious desires and worries; a literary work is an expression of the author's neuroses. It is possible to psychoanalyze a specific literary character, however it is generally accepted that all such characters are reflections of the author's personality. A remarkable characteristic of this method is that it affirms the significance of literature by utilizing a literary key for decoding. Freud himself penned, "The dream-thoughts that we first encounter in the course of our analysis often blow us by the unusual form in which they are expressed; they are not clothed in the prosaic language typically employed by our thoughts, but are instead represented symbolically through similes and metaphors, in images resembling poetic speech". This analytical attempt, like psychoanalysis itself, seeks evidence of unresolved emotions, psychological conflicts, guilts, ambivalences, etc. within a potentially disjointed literary work. The author's personal childhood traumas, family life, sexual difficulties, and fixations will be reflected in the conduct of the literary work's characters. Yet psychological material will be expressed indirectly, disguised, or encoded (as in dreams) via concepts such as "symbolism" (the repressed object represented in disguise), "condensation" (many thoughts or individuals depicted in a single image), and "displacement" (anxiety located onto another image by means of association). Many artists expressed their thoughts, anxiety, and buried dreams through song lyrics. One of which is Billy Joel with his song Vienna. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The lyrics of Vienna’s song are analyzed utilizing psychoanalytic literary criticism theory as the guidelines. The findings show that this song contains many elements of psychoanalytic through the metaphors that Billy Joel used in the lyrics.

Abstract

Abstract

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a part of applied science, a combination of Linguistics and Psychological Sciences which has been frequently used in various domains since 1970. Its effectiveness in responding to various situations can be seen in the scope of companies, businesses, campuses, education, marketing, health, personal life, and even the improvement of spiritual life. NLP is a powerful and useful methodology that helps us communicate effectively and get the desired results. In this research, NLP technique observations were carried out on the multiculturalism activities of Pandita/Hindu Religious Leaders in Bali. Hindu priests in Bali give religious lectures, cultural seminars, and religious and cultural rituals not only in Balinese and Indonesian but also in English. Multiculturalism activities are also carried out by various ethnic groups, religions, and citizens of the world. There are three NLP patterns used by Hindu Pandita in Bali in their multiculturalism activities: Deletion, Generalization, and Distortion. Frequently, the Deletion and Distortion techniques are most widely used. These techniques can provide benefits such as communication becoming more effective and flexible, the speaker becoming more charismatic, and listeners being curious about what kind of thoughts/views they have and having further curiosity.

Abstract

This study examines expressive speech acts in the comments section of One Direction’s YouTube video titled “10 Years of One Direction.” It aims to identify the types of expressive acts used, explore their communicative purposes, and determine which type is most frequently employed. The research uses Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) classification—which includes acts such as thanking, apologizing, congratulating, praising, sorrowing, boasting, blaming, and greeting—and Leech’s (2014) categorization of speech act functions (competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive). Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by basic quantitative analysis, the study analyzes 70 selected comments from the video. Results show eight types of expressive speech acts: thanking, congratulating, praising, sorrowing, blaming, happiness, boasting, and regretting. These acts mostly serve convivial, collaborative, and conflictive functions. Notably, sorrowing was the most frequent, appearing in 28.57% of the comments, indicating a strong nostalgic and emotional response among fans. The findings highlight how digital fan communities use expressive language to share emotions and build collective memories.
