Abstract

This study explores how love metaphors are expressed in three selected songs: Guilty as Sin, The Alchemy, and But Daddy I Love Him, from Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album. Language plays a crucial role in conveying abstract emotions like love, and metaphor is a powerful tool for articulating complex feelings in song lyrics. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the research analyzes the lyrics through Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, categorizing metaphors into structural, ontological, and orientational types. Data were collected by closely reading the lyrics and noting metaphorical expressions, which were then interpreted within their emotional and thematic contexts. The findings reveal that ontological and structural metaphors dominate, portraying love as poetic storytelling and an evolving emotional journey, while no orientational metaphors were identified. This study highlights how Taylor Swift employs metaphorical language to capture the multifaceted nature of love, heartbreak, and personal transformation, demonstrating the significant role of metaphor in shaping emotional meaning in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

This research is carried out to study the types and meanings of compound words found in Kendrick Lamar’s song lyrics on the GNX album. The main goal is to identify how the compound words are formed and to understand their meanings. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The theory from McCarthy (2002) is used to group the compound words into three types: noun compounds, verb compounds, and adjective compounds. To analyze the meanings, the study uses Booij’s (2007) theory, which explains two kinds of meaning in compounds: endocentric and exocentric. The data for this research are taken from all twelve songs on the album. The results show that the lyrics include all three types of compound words. The meanings found in the compounds include both endocentric and exocentric types. These findings are explained using simple written descriptions to give a clear understanding of the compounds found in the lyrics. The analysis shows that the lyrics contain many uncommon compound words, which shows the use of creative and modern language.

In the analysis results, assertives were predominantly found in Donald Trump’s State of the Union address with the total of 266 data, which dominantly described how important the act of assertive is in political discourse as it is used as a way to persuade the hearer. The remaining acts that were found are directives with the total of twenty-eight data, commissives with the total of fourteen data, expressives with the total of twenty-two data, and declrations with the total of two data. Abstract

This study is entitled The English Translations of French Negation in Amour Film. This study aims to find out the distinctions between French and English negation through the types of negation sentence forms and how French negation, as the source language, is translated into English in the subtitle. The data source was taken from the Amour film. The method used in collecting data is documentation with note-taking techniques. Qualitative descriptive method is used in analyzing the data that has been collected. The theory used to identify the data is the theory of translation equivalence by Nida. Meanwhile, the negation of French and English is determined using the theories of Hawkins (2001) and Huddleston (2005). Based on the theory of translation by Nida, there are two kinds of equivalence: formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence. The results of this study showed that there were 91 data points from French negation in the Amour film; 70 were identified as formal equivalence, and 21 were identified as dynamic equivalence. Based on the two problems of the study, there were six types of French negation and four types of English negation. Keywords: Translation, French negation, English negation

Abstract

This article entitled Structural Metaphor in The Novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, aims to identify and analyze structural metaphors and their underlying meanings. The data were collected from dialogues and narrative passages, specifically phrases, clauses, and sentences within the novel. Employing a documentation method and note-taking technique, the study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis was presented in informal through descriptive discussion in paragraph form. The theories applied in this study were the theory of metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) to analyze the type of metaphor, especially structural metaphor. This study focused on finding structural metaphors out of three types of metaphors, and also focused on analyzing the meaning of the metaphor. The result of the study shows that there are representations of structural metaphor in the novel, and all the meanings implied by each of the metaphors are found, highlighting their central role in expressing grief and emotional transformation. These metaphors illuminate the protagonist's internal struggles and reveal universal aspects of the human experience, such as loss, grief, resilience, and the search for connection.
