Abstract

This study was conducted to determine whether passive stretching can lower blood glucose levels in people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Denpasar City. This study was an experimental study with Pre and Post Test Control Group Design. Samples of 24 people were divided into two groups; an intervention group that was given a program of passive stretching and a control group (negative control) that was given no intervention. Each group consisted of 12 samples. Data analysis was done to compare the mean difference in blood glucose drop before and after given the intervention in both groups. The results obtained were p = 0.000 (p <0.05) for the first day of study and p = 0.000 (p <0.05) for the second day of study. There was a significantly greater drop in blood glucose in the intervention group compared to the control group on both days of study (first day 27.08 mg/dL, second day 21.33 mg/dL). In conclusion, there was a significant difference in blood glucose drop between the intervention group and the control group. Passive stretching lowers blood glucose levels in people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Background: The accumulation of fat decreases lung function. Peak expiratory flow is an indicator for assessing pulmonary function and can be used to identify the narrowing or obstruction of the airway. This study aimed to examine the correlation between body fat percentage and peak expiratory flow in children aged 10-12 years. Methods: This study was an analytical study with a cross-sectional design carried out in March 2019 at SD Negeri 8 Dauh Puri, Denpasar. Sampling was done by simple random sampling, and 84 samples were recruited who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Body fat percentage was measured using Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, while peak expiratory flow was measured using Peak Flow Meters. Data analysis was done using the Pearson Correlation test..Result: The Pearson Correlation Test showed a negative weak correlation between the percentage of body fat and peak expiratory flow with p=0.009 and a correlation coefficient of -0.284. It can be interpreted that the higher the body fat percentage, the higher the value of peak expiratory flow. Conclusion : There is a significant correlation between body fat percentage and peak expiratory flow in children aged 10-12 years at SD Negeri 8 Dauh Puri.

Abstract

Background: Neurocritical patients commonly present with increased intracranial pressure and are regularly treated with physiotherapy through exercise early after admission to the intensive care unit. However, the effect of exercise on intracranial pressure is minimally investigated, and there appears to be no systematic reviews or meta-analyses addressing this topic in the published literature. This study aimed to determine the effect of exercise on the intracranial pressure of neurocritical patients. Methods: Through a systematic review, literature searches on PubMed, PEDro, and CENTRAL were conducted in January 2020. The keywords used were: “physical therapy”, “physiotherapy”, “exercise”, “range of motion”, “intracranial pressure”, and “ICP”, combined using Boolean operators “OR” and “AND”. Only studies published in the English and Indonesian language were considered. Results: A total of five studies involving 193 patients (mean age 41-56 years old) were included in this review. Most included studies reported that intracranial pressure did not change significantly after passive range of motion exercise, and some studies found that intracranial pressure actually decreased significantly during and after passive range of motion and active exercise. An additional finding was that isometric exercise significantly increased mean intracranial pressure in patients with normal intracranial pressure. All studies reported that exercise could be used safely in patients. Conclusion: Exercise, in particular passive range of motion, does not increase the intracranial pressure of neurocritical patients and does not lead to any adverse effects, as long as isometric or Valsalva-like maneuvers are avoided.

Abstract

Introduction: Pusher syndrome is a disorder that is clinically present in 5-52% of stroke patients, characterized by active pushing using the non-paretic side towards the paretic side, and resistance to the passive correction of posture. This disorder can pose an unfavorable effect on the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Hence, finding effective therapeutic approaches for pusher syndrome is crucial. This study aimed to identify the existing therapeutic approaches for pusher syndrome and investigate their effectiveness. Methods: A literature review was carried out, where studies were identified through searching the PubMed database from database inception to 2019 using the keywords: “pusher syndrome”, “pusher behaviour”, “contraversive pushing”, “ipsilateral pushing”, “lateropulsion”, “physiotherapy”, “physical therapy”, “treatment”, “therapeutic approach”, “therapy” and “training”.  The literatures were analyzed systematically based on the results of previous studies. Results: Several approaches were identified for treating pusher syndrome post-stroke, including robot-assisted gait training (RAGT), galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS), visual feedback (VF), and physiotherapy with additional components such as relaxation therapy in the prone position and lateral stepping with body weight–supported treadmill training (LS-BWSTT). RAGT and VF training appear to be promising adjunctive approaches for treating pusher syndrome. Conventional physiotherapy with additional components such as relaxation therapy and LS-BWSTT have also led to positive effects. However, the effect of GVS has not been established. Conclusion: There is evidence that some therapeutic approaches can be beneficial for improving pusher syndrome and outcomes of stroke patients, in particular when combined with conventional physiotherapy. However, the number of studies is still very limited. Further research with methodological rigor is needed.

Abstract

Some things can cause a person to have a dependence on using a computer just like office work or in terms of getting entertainment such as playing video games among adolescents. Some research leads to the duration of playing video games which is one of the risk factors of the MPS. The prevalence of MPS in general population varies by up to 85%. The method used in this study is an analytical observational method with a cross sectional approach. This study used simple random sampling techniques and the study subjects were observed with a one-time measurement of dependent variables. This research design was used to find out whether there was a relationship between the duration of playing video games and myofascial pain syndrome of upper trapezius muscle in adolescents in Denpasar City. The results showed from the total of 59 study samples, there were 46 samples (78.0%) who had upper trapezius MPS and as many as 13 samples (22.0%) who did not experience upper trapezius MPS. The distribution of research samples that experienced MPS was more in adolescents who had excessive duration of playing video games (>2 hours / day) which was 45 samples (76.3%) than samples who had MPS with a normal duration of playing video games (<2 hours / day). The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant correlation (p = 0.000) between the duration of playing video games and MPS of the upper trapezius muscle in adolescents in Denpasar City.

Abstract

The elderly experience structural changes in the function of biological systems in their bodies due to the ageing process they experience. One of the changes that arise in the health aspect as a result of the ageing process is a decline in cognitive function. The decline in cognitive function in the elderly occurs due to gradual changes in the elderly brain, where this can cause the elderly to experience independence in carrying out daily activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between cognitive function and the level of independence in doing activities of daily living in the elderly in Banjar Ketapian Kelod, Denpasar City. This type of study is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design that uses a consecutive sampling technique. The number of subjects obtained in this study was 62 elderly subjects who met the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through interviews using the MoCA-Ina questionnaire to measure cognitive function and interviews using the Barthel index questionnaire to measure daily activities. Spearman rho non-parametric analysis test results from cognitive function with daily activities obtained p value = 0.000 (p <0.05) and correlation coefficient r = 0.648. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the two variables have a strong, meaningful, and directly proportional relationship between cognitive function and the level of independence in doing activities of daily living in the elderly in Banjar Ketapian Kelod, Denpasar City. Keywords: cognitive function; elderly; independence; activities of daily living
